Abstract

Islamic boarding schools are schools that base their education on the teachings of Islam. The beauty of Muslim women related to face, body, and appearance in a boarding school-based school community is interpreted based on religious texts adhered to. This study aims to see how the pesantren-based school community constructs the meaning of female beauty and how it is constructed through a group conversation on media such as LINE. This research is ethnomethodology research which is studied using qualitative methods with Conversational Analysis. The theory used in this study refers to the Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf. The results of the study found that women's beauty was interpreted based on Islamic texts, namely beautiful without excessive makeup and beautifully dressed in Shari'a. The arrangement of conversations that refer to turn-taking is done in sequence (sequence) shows that the meaning of beauty is controlled by male participants, while female participants tend to be a back channel. The Repair Organization and The Organization of Turn-design show the use of language signs and symbolization that affirms the meaning of beauty which leads to beautiful meaning without excessive makeup and beautifully dressed in Shari'a. The meaning of beauty in the conversation of the alumni group of Islamic boarding school Insan Cendekia Gorontalo is a form of Beauty Myth. LINE as an online media is considered capable of perpetuating the beauty myth that appears in conversations.

Abstract

Christian gay individuals still has difficulties to fulfil their religious rights, one of them is affiliating themselves in a Christian-based group. It happens because heteronormativity is still dominant in Christian values, both in Protestant and Catholic teachings. Therefore, this study seeks to illustrate how homosexuals negotiate their sexual identities in Christian-based groups. Adopting critical phenomenology paradigm with interpretative method, this research does not only describe the negotiations, but also seeks to see whether there is a power relation to homosexuals in the sexuality discourse. Stella Ting-Toomeys’s Negotiation Identity Theory combined with Queer’s Theory was used to analyse the phenomenon. This research was not only conducted in-depth interviews with Christian homosexuals but also other members in the religious groups that are followed in order to overview the identity negotiations in the groups. Interviews with some religious leaders were also conducted in order to see how homosexuality is understood in Christianity views. The results of this study form the essence of homosexuals’ experience in negotiating their sexual identities in their Christian-based group that are followed. The formation of homosexual identity of the individuals is influenced by heteronormative teachings of Christianity so it created an identity struggle for the individuals. However, these individuals were still able to integrate their identities as homosexuals and Christians and eventually decided to become members of the Christian groups. Before negotiating identity in the religious groups, cognitive negotiations in homosexual individuals also have an ongoing role in determining the strategies that individuals will use to negotiate their identities. They use several strategies to negotiate their identities, from asserting, describing, modifying, and obscuring the identities so the identities can be accepted by themselves and other group members. Nevertheless, the process of negotiating the identity of individuals with each member of the religious groups will be different because it is also based on the closeness of the individual with each group member. The individuals did not fully neglected their homosexual identities despite some rejection in the groups. This study also still found power relations that rule how informants manage their homosexual identity based on heteronormativity values. However, these individuals try to change the power relations through the process of negotiating their homosexual identities in the groups.

Abstract

JKT48 often tells about love stories from the perspective of women, and it shows that love is a main theme which considered as important for women. Romantic relationship stories then become a theme which often found in women singers’ song lyrics, and it shows its importance for women. Thus, this research aims to find out how romantic relationship itself is represented in JKT48’s song lyrics. This research used constructivism paradigm with qualitative approach and semiotic as its analysis method. The data collection techniques use the study of documents and the study of bibliography. The data analysis technique used Barthes’s narration codes or Barthes lexia codes which consisted of hermeneutics code, semic code, symbolic code, proairectic code, and cultural code. The result of this research showed that: there is a liking toward the other person in the form of physical and non-physical attraction, physical beauty was perceived as beneficial for women to achieve the ideal romantic relationship, keeping the virginity is perceived as a principle, men prefer a physical beauty as a criterion for their romantic relationship partner, women can reject romantic relationship if they haven’t fulfill their own idealism on the relationship itself, and there was an integration of meaning and hope in the events.

Abstract

The dilemmatic problems experienced by female dancers of Ratoh Jaroe became the background of this study. On one side, they got the chances to be able to perform publicly. However, on the other side, there are rules about how they should perform. The purpose of this research is to understand the meaning of stage communication by the female dancers of Ratoh Jaroe. This research uses descriptive qualitative methods. Performance studies by Richard Schechner, Cultural Schema Theory by William Gudykunst and Identity Negotiation Theory by Stella Ting-Toomey are the theories used in this research. The results of this research shows that the dancers experienced the stage communication process that occured before, during, and after the performances. Ratoh Jaroe dancers interpreted their dances as the form of entertainment, advice and as the existence of women's identity, religion’s identity and culture’s identity. Furthermore, Ratoh Jaroe emphasizes the existence of female dancers as a form of women power with their roles to express themselves on stage or in public. However, the existence of Ratoh Jaroe as the product of Aceh’ culture requires the dancers to be mindful towards the existing repressions.

Abstract

In watching film, the audience actively produces the meaning of the texts in the film. The audience's active interpretation of film texts makes the meanings diverse. This is because each audience has a different background, experience and daily life. The Post is a film featuring press freedom based on United States history. This film presents a picture of the media and newspaper reporters in carrying out their duties when faced with realities on the ground. Reporters are described as not always running smoothly when carrying out their journalistic duties, they are faced with challenges and obstacles both from within the media company and from outside. However, the meaning of the audience is not necessarily in accordance with the meaning offered by the media text in the film The Post. This study aims to describe the audience's meaning of press freedom in the film The Post. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach, and the Stuart Hall reception analysis method. The subjects of this research are journalists, press workers and media observers who have watched The Post film. The paradigm of this research is interpretive and the theory used is the Encoding-Decoding Model, Audience Meaning Theory and Four Theories of The Press. This study aims to describe the audience's meaning of press freedom in The Post film. This study uses a qualitative-descriptive approach, and the Stuart Hall reception analysis method. The subjects of this research are journalists, press workers and media observers who have watched The Post film. The paradigm of this research is interpretive and the theory used is Four Theories of The Press, Audience Meaning Theory, and Encoding-Decoding Model. The results of this study succeeded selected sixteen preferred readings that featured press freedom in the text in The Post film. From the results of the research, it shows that the informants have different meanings. However, on the whole, informants have a tendency to interpret media texts in a negotiation. Informants interpret media texts in a negotiated position on the element of intervention freedom, there are it is natural that there is intervention in the political economy of the media because they think about the impact but if the impact of news is not greater than the interests of the community then there should be no prevention, the redaction does not have to ask the media owner's approval when publishing but in general the redaction ask the media owner's approval, and it doesn't matter the redaction ask for the media owner's approval but the news must contain confirmation from the parties concerned. On element of publication freedom, there are the media are free to publish news but must include sources of information, the sources must be clear and competent, and still refers to journalistic principles and Journalistic Code of Ethics. On element of judicial independence, there is the publication of the Pentagon Papers news does not violate the Espionage Act so it should not be brought to justice. On element of public broadcasting institutions, there are when the news has a large impact then the media people must discuss first not immediately publish news and it doesn't matter the source is the same as other media but the most important thing is different on the presentation. On element of criminalization and intimidation of the press, there are accommodative media are loved and critical media are silenced, censorship is not in accordance with press freedom but the presentation of news must be balanced, news publications can violate the rule of law but from a journalistic perspective it does not violate the rule of law, the rule of law can indeed curb but writing remain accountable, the thought of journalists when writing but in writing remains according to journalistic principles, and news publications remain in accordance to Journalistic Code of Ethics. Informants interpret media texts based on the context and situation of a media as well as from their knowledge and everyday experiences.

Abstract

Menstruation is a normal part of women’s body, so it should be discussed normally like any other topic. However, negative perspective, disgust, and certain norms make it difficult for women to express themselves and discuss their menstrual experiences. This study aims to un-derstand how menstruation as part of women’s body is communicated from the very first mens-truation until the last menstruation. Critical paradigm is used to reveal various inequalities, negative treatment, and the negative impacts experienced by women, by using muted group theory and communication privacy management theory. The data obtained from in-depth inter-views with seven informants are analyzed using the critical narrative study method. The results of this study revealed that menstruation is a topic that is avoided, and discussions about menstruation will only occur in urgent situation. Women experienced lot of difficulities because the lack of discussion about menstruation as a part of the body with pa-rents. This problem continues as time goes because discussions about menstruation are also avoided in the school—both with friends and educators—, in the doctor’s consult room, in the work environment, and also with partners. This brings negative impact such; alienation from one’s own body, difficulties in ex-pressing oneself, conflicts with partners, and losing the education rights, health rights, and al-so sanitation rights. The study also found that women received negative treatment during menstruation, starting from those closest to them; from both men and fellow women who also menstruate. However, women begin to accept this negative treatment as something normal and they also start to interpret their menstrual experiences based on man’s perspective.

Abstract

The main goal of this study is to describe the anxiety and uncertainty management of refugees in Semarang. The research dive deeper into understanding and describing the communication anxiety and uncertainty faces by asylum seekers in Semarang and their struggle to manage it during their interval time for the asylum opportunities. The result of the study itself shows how the anxiety cause by dangerous is their migration journey and their living condition in Indonesia. With limited chance to form an effective communicate with the responsible immigration and United Nations representatives, the asylum seeker force to cope with current and very underwhelming living condition as well as limited access to public service without any meaningful solution or any communications process. There are also evidence of the how the refugees trying to make sense of the situation and starting to open them self to the local in order to reduce their anxiety. It is also worth to mention, even in the limited chance to make any impactful interaction with the IOM in Indonesia, the refugees found ways to extract information about their asylum status in which lower their feeling of uncertainty during this trying time.

Abstract

The advancement of internet and communication technologies encouraged the growth of virtual groups. In the meanwhile, video games were getting more common and popular to be played. Virtual groups based on video games bloomed because of these two things. Budak MMR is one of the many existing video game based virtual groups. This phenomenon of video game based virtual groups growth can be considered something new. Both virtual and gamer groups are not completely understood and misconceptions about them are not uncommon. This research tries to grasp the sense of community and converged symbolic fantasies as the result of interactions occurring inside Budak MMR, a virtual group based off a video game namely Dota 2. This research is a qualitative research with an autoethnography method which uses the researcher’s experience as a research subject. The theories used in the research are sense of community theory, symbolic convergence theory, and group cohesivity. In-depth interview on a few members of Budak MMR and narrative reflections were used as the measures of collecting data. The findings show that sense of community exists in Budak MMR, from the element of membership, influence, fulfillment of needs, to emotional connection. Fantasies from symbolic convergence in Budak MMR take form in inside jokes, role-playing, and speech codes. Jokes told there are jokes concerning happening situations and also jokes about sensitive matters. Role-playing in Budak MMR is mainly about interaction between lecturer and students. Speech code used there is about status and emotional expression. This research also found few implications on sense of community and convergence symbolic theory.

Abstract

Phenomenon of multicultural society in Indonesia should not be a barrier for people to live in harmony. However, in reality, the cultural differences often causes conflict, especially among minorities, one of them is Papuan ethnic who experience discrimination. Then, it becomes a new problem how they return to live with the society after the conflict happened. This study uses a qualitative method, with an interpretive paradigm and a phenomenological approach. The data collected with in-depth interview technique. The theories used in this study are acculturation process theory, integrative theory of cross-cultural adaptation and face negotiation theory. The results of this study reveal that, (1) the process of re-adaptation is a dynamic process of stress-adaptation that related to the previous communication to encourage individual to take certain communication actions at the next phase. (2) this process occurs through three phases, the recovery phase, the initiation of communication phase and the assimilation phase. The recovery phase is an individual’s effort to prepare and reduce post-conflict stress before returning to society. The initiation of communication phase is an individual’s effort to open communication acess opportunities with the society and The final phase is assimilation phase is an individual’s attempt to balance their identity by collaborating their old culture with the new culture through communication strategies. (3) the process of re-adaptation doesn’t always run smoothly due to communication barrier, there are post-conflict stereotypes and affected by other conflict. (4) There are the different of communication strategies between individual who live alone and live in a group. For individual who live alone or self-concerned, the communication strategies carried out by starting to use Javanese and being friendly. Meanwhile, individual who live in a group or mutual-concern have more responsibility for their fellow members, manage the group structure, repair group facilities, build and maintain communication between group members and the society. This communication strategy resulted a better relationship stage before the conflict happened.

Abstract

Siti is one of the many movies that portray women with a perspective that is rarely found in Indonesia earlier movies. Women in Indonesia earlier movies are often represented as a figure that does not have a choice, always subject to the dominance and masculinity shown by men. This study aims to describe the radicalism of women in patriarchal Javanese culture represented in the Siti movie. This type of research is qualitative research with semiotic approach. The analytical techniques used in this study is based on the concept of The Codes of Television presented by John Fiske. In analyzing the moving object, Fiske analyzes it in three levels: Reality level, Representation level, and Ideology level. Reality and Representation levels are analyzed syntagmatically. While the level of ideology is analyzed paradigmatically. The results of this study indicate that Siti is a radical (a radical-cultural that also radical-libertarian). This can be seen through the elements of radicalism represented by Siti. These elements appear at the level of Reality, Representation, and Ideology. Siti is a manifestation of the representation of women that appears in Indonesian movies produced after reformation. As an active woman, she is able to escape the objectification of men, and able to become a subject whose can determine her own life. Siti's courage was not only shown when she appeared masculine and served as the main economic support of her family. However, Siti's courage was also displayed through her emphasis on feminine values in the community. Through emphasizing these feminine values, Siti scheming against her weaknesses as a woman who is in a patriarchal culture.
