Abstract

This study aimed to obtain endophytic bacterial isolates originated from healthy cacao plant, potential for plant-growth promoting of cacao seedlings. This study was carried out in the Phytopathology Laboratory Unit of the Plant Protection Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Halu Oleo University. This study was conducted using a completely randomized design (CRD) using ten isolates of endophytic bacteria from healthy cocoa plants as treatments, plus a control treatment. The experiment was conducted in a screenhouse using seed treatment and planted in seedling boxes, containing sterile rice-husk charcoal as a growing medium. The result showed that three endophytic bacteria tested (isolates 2RPR1, 2RWB2, and 5BRB3) were potential as plant growth-promoting of cocoa seedlings, because the isolates were able to increase seed germination up to 96.67%, relative growth rate up to 90-96.67%, increased plant height up to 47.85-67.17%, root dry weight up to 35.08-52.63%, and canopy dry weight up to 97.71-108.46%. The superiority of the three isolates were related to their abilities to fix nitrogen, dissolve phosphate, as well as to produce indole acetic acid. Keywords: cacao, endophytic bacteria, plant growth-promoting agent, seed viability

Abstract

Biochar enriched with fertilizers has the potential to improve the quality of acid soils. In the agricultural sector, it was reported that the sap of Kappapychus alvarezii (K-sap) is often used as a biofertilizer. Therefore, this study aimed to (i) examine the character of biochar enriched with the K-sap and (ii) analyze the soil quality after incubation. This study was carried out using two treatment factors arranged in a randomized block design, namely the biochar dose at 0%, 2.5%, 5.0%, and 7.5% in weight and K-sap at concentrations of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%.  Ten kilograms of acid soil were incubated with K-sap enriched biochar for up to 2 weeks in each experimental pot. The results showed that the absorption band increased with the K-sap concentration for the functional group associated with the OH-stretching of the biochar enriched with K-sap was stronger and wider than the unenriched. The peak elevation pattern detected by X-ray diffraction for all biochars was similar. The dosage of 7.5% biochar enriched with 5%-10% K-sap concentrations increased pH, EC, organic C, total N, C:N ratio, available P, and exchangeable K, Ca, Mg, and Si than those without treatment. Furthermore, ammonium and total spores of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi decreased, flagellates increased with and without the biochar, while the nitrate, total bacteria, and fungi of all treatments were similar. Based on these results, it was concluded that biochar enriched with K-sap could improve the quality of acid soil.

Abstract

The manufacture and application of compost fertilizer and POP technology (organic fertilizer plus) was carried out in the community in Alebo Village and/or Masagena, Konda District, South Konawe Regency, both for non-productive communities and owners of livestock waste processing. Alebo and Masagena villages are vegetable and annual crop farming areas, which are cultivated throughout the year and generally depend heavily on chemical fertilizers. Therefore, POP and/or compost technology is needed to improve the quality of soil nutrients and increase the production of healthy plants. In the villages of Alebo and Masagena there are abundant reservoirs for livestock waste and rice husks but they have not been processed optimally, but are only sold in the form of rice husks and raw cow husks at relatively cheap prices so that they do not provide added value for the village community, so this community service activity was done to improve environmental conditions which had been polluted due to the use of chemical fertilizers, and can also increase the income of local communities by utilizing existing waste to make organic fertilizer (compost and POP). Organic fertilizer has a higher price than livestock waste and unprocessed rice husks. The solution implemented in this service activity was the application of technology to change the use of chemical fertilizers by using POP technology and compost fertilizer so that farming land is even more productive.

Abstract

Mustard greens (Brassica chinensis) are a high-potential horticultural crop in Indonesia, supported by rapid growth, strong market demand, and significant contributions to food security. This study examined the impact of various organic amendments on phosphorus (P) availability and plant growth in sandy soil. The experiment employed a two-factor Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three types of organic material: cattle manure (B1), goat manure (B2), and Gliricidia sepium green manure (B3), and three application rates: 0% (D1), 10% (500 g polybag-⁻ ¹; D2), and 20% (1000 g polybag-⁻ ¹; D3). Each treatment combination was replicated three times, yielding 27 experimental units. Measured variables included P nutrient concentration, plant height, and leaf number. Data were analyzed using ANOVA, followed by Tukey's Honest Significant Difference (HSD) test to determine the most effective treatment for phosphorus nutrient levels and plant growth. The application of organic materials significantly increased P availability, with B3D3 yielding the highest concentration (21.03 ppm) and enhancing mustard green growth under sandy soil conditions.

Abstract

Abstract

The initial population of Nilaparvata lugens was obtained from the field and developed in the entomology and toxicology laboratory of the plant protection department of Halu Oleo University. This study began with mass cultivation of the N. lugens insect pest. This was followed by selecting the LC50 concentration based on mortality at 72 hours after treatment. The results of the probit analysis found an LC50 value 3.16 ml/L for the insecticide deltamethrin. The high recommended concentration found for the insecticide deltamethrin is suspected because it is not recommended for use on N. lugens in rice fields. Increasing the frequency of application at sublethal concentrations (LC10 and LC25) was shown to trigger an increase in the resurgence ratio of 1.50 and 1.70 times, respectively, compared to the control group.
