Abstract

The goal of this article is to discuss Southern Honor, the work written by Brown using American Studies Approach/ theory. American Studies is an interdisciplinary discipline comprising of social science, humanities, history, art, economics, sociology, anthropology, politics, religion, and law. In American studies method, a researcher, for instance – from a discipline of historical science- in collecting data, he or she does not only use data from history but also from a literary work like novel or drama because a literary work was a mental fact of society at that time This makes American Studies different from the other disciplines. Southern Honor by Brown is an example of work written by American Studies approach using three principal theories of American Studies such as: 1. Reconciliation of Tenses (Past, Present, Future); 2. Reconciliation of Academic discipline (Anthropology, Economy, Politics, Sociology, Psychology, Literature, and History); 3. Reconciliation of Region, Nation, and World. For the theory of number 3 starting from something micro namely “Honors” in the society of southern America like “gentle”, “oath”, possession of wealth, and so on can explain more detail about America. The result of this research proves that “Honor” does not only give influence on the ethic and behavior of southern American society at that time, before civil war, but also provide influence on all aspects of life of American society as a whole up to now.

Abstract

Contacts of two different languages often lead to some grammatical errors, especially if the source language and target language are from different language families. This study deals with the interference of Indonesian to English found in student essays in the Writing class. The purpose of this study is to uncover cases of language interference carried out by students. The research data is in the form of sentences containing grammatical errors caused by Indonesian interference to English. Data were collected from 35 essays written by students participating in The Writing Course 03 (Class A) from August – December 2021 in the English Literature Department - Faculty of Humanities - Jember University. Once collected, the data are classified and analyzed using an error analysis framework and a sociolinguistic perspective. The results show that there are nine types of grammatical interference which comprise: plural noun forms, the conformity of the subject-verb form, tenses, word forms, prepositions, article, conjunctions,  word pairs        (mismatch), passive form. These grammatical errors prove the interference of Indonesian to English because students are still very strongly influenced by the rules of their native language (Indonesian) when they write essays in English.

Abstract

As a country with full of cultural diversity, Indonesia has various cultures comprising knowledge, belief, art, law, moral, custom, and habit possessed by human as a member of a community. One of the cultural forms in Indonesia is mantra which is still maintained up to the current time and is still practiced by the community in many different places for many different purposes. One of the existing mantras is mantra pengasihan (the spell of affection). The aim of this study is to reveal the role of linguistic features used in mantra pengasihan (MP), especially Sabuk Mangir. The data were collected by deeply interviewing some Subjects (shamans/dukun/pawang or the mantra spellers) and the Object (the target persons) in Glagah and Licin Subdistricts, Banyuwangi. Having been collected, the data were analyzed by content analysis approach to find the types of languages, the narrative elements, the sentence patterns, and the figurative languages used in MP. This research reveals that mostly MP uses (Osing) Javanese and Arabic language, employs opening, main part, and closing elements to express the magic power, chooses declarative and imperative moods to state the physical description of the speller, and the request to the supernatural power, and uses some figurative languages (metaphors, simile, and repetition) to motivate and generate the magical power. Keywords: dukun, magi, mantra, magical power, Osing,

Abstract

United States of America is known as a country that promises its people or immigrants who come to America to become successful by providing ‘American Dream’ as the country’s national ethos. These people are given equal chances to bring out their dreams and aspirations. However, American Dream is not always the dream for everyone as experienced by the characters in Christina Henriques’ novel The Book of Unknown Americans. Issue of injustice shadows immigrants who are in search of this dream. Facing problems of injustice such as racism, different treatment of immigrants, and sexual harassment are inevitable for these Latino people when they first come to the United States. This study is aimed at discussing the failures and injustices that Latino immigrants’ characters of the novel must face when they attempt of achieving the American Dream. The method used in this study is qualitative method. The data of this research are in the forms of language and its discourse. Stuart Hall’s Theory of Representation is used to analyze the research data. The results of this study show that not all-American dreams can be fulfilled easily, in particular for Latino immigrant characters in the novel. What have been faced by these characters are significant experiences to learn for anyone who wants to pursue their dream in United States of America.

Abstract

This paper discusses the problems of racism in the novel On Beauty. The analysis focuses on both individual and systemic racism represented in the novel as well as the critical position of the author. It employed Stuart Hall theory under qualitative method of analysis. The textual analysis was made to the narratives and dialogues in the novel which constitute racism in their meanings. It was concerned with how racism happens in the storyline. Meanwhile, the contextual analysis was carried out by using related references to supports the findings and the researchers’ arguments. The result showed that black women still accepted  negative stereotypes and became the objects of white people’s oppressions. They were mistreated despite the application of the law on equal protection for women and minorities. In 2000s, systemic racism continued and made it even harder for black people to get the same treatment as the whites. They suffered from the policies, particularly educational policies which had led to the increase of the poverty rate of black people.

Abstract

The Beji Antaboga tourist site provides a religious atmosphere full of tolerance by building various statues of religious symbols located in a forest in Banyuwangi. The harmony between humans and nature is very well maintained at this location. This nuance is supported by a fictional story that is believed by the local community, namely the Antaboga dragon. However, the place is fully taken care of by Hindus who are indeed attached to protecting the surrounding nature, and their commitment to guard several points of springs. This research aims to measure the inter-religious relations in the area and also to analyze the extent to which folklore as a discourse can be recontextualized as an effort to harmonize the bond of humans with nature. The research method used is qualitative, the first step applies the narrative structure of the story through actantial theory, the second is tracing the hypogram for the Antaboga story which dated back to Hindu’s teaching, and the last is looking at discourse as a power practice to recontextualize the harmonius reality. The finding shows Antaboga story is indeed to legitimise nature as the centre and not humans as the main actors.

Abstract

The Yogyakarta government's decision to construct the Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA) was prompted by the limited capacity of Adisutjipto Airport, which could only accommodate 1.2 million passengers. In reality, the number of passengers exceeded five times its capacity due to congested flight schedules and inadequate airport facilities. Since 2020, flights have been redirected to YIA, as stated on the official Adisutjipto Airport website. The airport's distant location from the city center influenced the development of mass transportation, particularly the direct rail connection between YIA and Yogyakarta city center. The YIA Airport Train Station began operations in October 2021, prompting the need for an evaluation of service facilities within the train and at the YIA Airport Station. This study aims to assess the extent to which services within the Airport Train and the YIA Airport Station meet minimum service standards and to innovate scheduling to improve passenger satisfaction. The Government has established the Minimum Service Standards for People Transportation by Train, covering safety, security, reliability, comfort, convenience, and equality. Evaluation is conducted through qualitative methods, including direct observation and an online questionnaire for primary data collection. The evaluation results indicate that several service facilities do not meet standards, such as the absence of toilets and prayer rooms in the station, a shortage of seating in waiting areas, inappropriate temperatures inside the train, and the need for additional departure schedules aligned with flights. The questionnaire reflects passengers' expectations for improved facilities and scheduling. This study proposes enhancements to facilities and train scheduling as steps toward improving service quality in the Airport Train and YIA Airport Station.

Abstract

Jember Regency ranks 8th in East Java and 11th in Indonesia for cases of malnutrition and stunting in infants. Kalisat District is among the top 5 for stunted babies in Jember. The root of the problem is not only the local economy but also the public's understanding of the term "nutrition," which is not yet reflected in daily life. Therefore, counseling on understanding the word nutrition, replaced with "amis-amis or mis-amis" for various high-protein side dishes, is essential. The young mothers in Jember had poor understanding and very low reflection on the term nutrition, contributing to malnutrition and stunting in Kalisat Village, Kalisat District. The solution is to conduct counseling and practical sessions on the importance of understanding the term "fishy side dishes" that are high in animal protein for pregnant and breastfeeding mothers to enhance brain and physical growth (fetal) and avoid malnutrition and stunting. The methods of implementation include observation, interviews (in FGD), counseling, and practical sessions in Kalisat Village, Jember. The results show that community service involving counseling or socialization of the understanding of the word nutrition, implemented through the replacement of the term with "fishy side dishes," is more effective. This approach includes FGD, counseling, and practical sessions of cooking and eating together using high-protein fishy side dishes. These methods are aimed at improving growth and development in children (from the womb, during breastfeeding, and in toddlers) to prevent malnutrition and stunting.

Abstract

Abstract

Basically, the structural function of the road will decrease over time, especially when the road is often passed by overloaded vehicles. The decline in road structural function will affect road user comfort, road user safety, transportation efficiency, accessibility, environment and other factors. The results of the study showed that of the total road length of 30,7 km with a road width of 7 m, about 6.52 km were damaged caused by overloading vehicles. The overall level of damage is categorized as lightly damaged based on the Bina Marga and SDI methods, although there are several segments that are in a severely damaged condition. The percentage of road damage caused by overloading vehicles was 14,563.35 m² (6.50%). The dominant types of damage include holes (3.01%), sinks (1.43%), and waves/curls (0.81%).The implementation of regulations on ODOL vehicles, regular road maintenance, and driver education are needed to improve safety, reduce the risk of accidents, and maintain the comfort of road users.
