Abstract

The formation of a compassionate character in the younger generation faces serious challenges amidst the flow of individualistic modernity. Islamic boarding schools as informal educational institutions have transformative potential that has not been systematically analyzed, especially in the context of cultural and religious pluralism. This study aims to uncover and analyze the construction of the informal educational ecosystem of the SPMAA Denpasar Islamic Boarding School, Bali, in forming a compassionate character in students through community service activities. The study used a qualitative approach with a single case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews, participant observation, focus group discussions, and documentation of 11 purposively selected informants, during the period August–November 2025. Data analysis used the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, following the stages of data reduction, data display, and concluding, with triangulation of sources and methods. The study identified a transformative ecosystem comprising nine integrated elements. The main findings show that the 24-hour total immersion architecture with an allocation of 65% informal character education (tadib) to 35% academic (talim), combined with community service as an authentic character laboratory in the context of Balinese plurality, is a dominant factor in the internalization of the value of compassion for others holistically and sustainably. The character transformation that occurs is ontological, marked by a shift in students' lives from a materialistic to an altruistic orientation. This research contributes to the development of the theory of the informal education ecosystem in Islamic boarding schools. It provides a practical model for cross-cultural character formation relevant to Non-Formal Education in pluralistic Indonesia.

Abstract

Farming culture is a social practice rich in local knowledge and ethnomathematical elements contained in each stage of rice cultivation, as well as analysing its relevance to contextual mathematics learning. The research used qualitative methods with an ethnographic approach through field observations, in-depth interviews, and documentation of farmers who were directly involved in all aspects of rice cultivation, including the forms of mathematical reasoning that arose naturally from the community's experience in cultivating rice fields. However, the potential of mathematics in the agricultural culture of Bareng Subdistrict, Jombang Regency, has not been widely explored as a source of learning in primary schools. This study aims to identify and describe the agricultural process. Data analysis was carried out through the stages of reduction, presentation, and interactive conclusion drawing. The results of the study show that every agricultural activity, from ngluku, nggebyok, nandur, ngopeni, to harvesting, contains mathematical concepts such as measurement, estimation, comparison, row-column patterns, symmetry, proportionality, division of space, work rhythm, and frequency calculation. These concepts are applied intuitively and are not expressed in formal mathematical language, but are reflected through the actions and work strategies of farmers. This study concludes that the farming culture of the Bareng community has strong potential as a learning resource for developing numeracy. Abstract

This study examines how parents of children with intellectual disabilities construct meaning and enact their roles within informal hybrid learning ecosystems, moving beyond deficit-oriented perspectives that portray them merely as vulnerable caregivers. Using a qualitative approach grounded in Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with 9 (nine) parents of children with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities in Malang Raya, Indonesia. The analysis identifies a transformative process in which parents shift from initial confusion and self-blame toward reflective pedagogical awareness. Over time, they reconstruct their identities as active learning facilitators who intentionally design home, community, and digital spaces as interconnected learning environments. Their practices are shaped by three interrelated dimensions of meaning: existential (orientation toward the child’s future independence), relational (dialogue and emotional closeness), and moral (commitment to character formation). These dimensions guide how parents structure daily routines, manage interactions, and utilize digital resources to foster autonomy and social development. The study concludes that parental agency in informal hybrid ecosystems is experiential, relational, and meaning-driven, and that strengthening inclusive education requires systemic support, equitable digital access, and responsive school–family partnerships that recognize parents as ecological learning designers

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of movement and force in Bantengan art through an ethnoscience perspective and to examine its potential as a context for learning Natural Sciences (IPA). Using a qualitative method with an ethnographic design, data were collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews with six informants (two main players, three musicians, and one instructor), and qualitative video analysis of Bantengan performances. The analysis reveals that specific Bantengan movements map onto distinct physics concepts: foot-stomping demonstrates Newton’s Third Law and the impulse–momentum theorem, running and headbutting illustrate the change of momentum during collision, body rotation exhibits the conservation of angular momentum, static jumps show the conversion of potential energy into kinetic energy, and extreme flexion movements reveal torque and biomechanical force balance. Beyond mechanics, Bantengan integrates cultural and spiritual values that offer an ethnoscience approach deepening students’ grasp of scientific concepts. These findings position Bantengan as a promising context for contextual science learning that bridges scientific theory and cultural practice while preserving local heritage
