Abstract

Lesson study is a classroom learning system in which several teachers collaboratively plan, teach, observe, revise, and deliver the output from one class. Regarding the lesson study implementation, teachers wisely explore how students learn, think, and change their behavior as an outcome of learning. Lesson Study implementation may lead to teaching improvement as teachers become more knowledgeable on how their students learn and think as well as how the instruction affects their students’ thinking. During the lesson design phase, teachers exchange ideas about how students might react to each part of the lesson. This paper presents a series of codes theoretically based on systematic documentation from teachers’ various learning and change aspects (knowledge and beliefs, professional learning communities, resources) in the cross-context lesson studies. Following the lesson observation research, teachers critically analyze collected data regarding the students learning and draw evidence-based implications to improve teaching instruction. This paper describes the influence of Lesson Study as an attempt to improve third-grade students’ writing skills. Data are collected through observation, interview, field notes, and direct practice. The implementation results of the Lesson Study for the third-grade students from February 2nd to March 7th, 2023, indicate that writing enhancement with capital capability increased to 12.68%, the use of punctuation was 21.43%, and the formation of simple patterned sentences was 1,12%. Nevertheless, the use of standard vocabulary decreased to 0.39%. Meanwhile, the observations during the process indicate the overall data of Lesson Study implementation as an attempt to increase students’ writing skills at 3.11%. The learning process that explores students' learning potential in improving their writing skills implies a positive result in their progress. Habit and practice on an ongoing basis can improve students' writing skills.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze primary school students' motivation to learn science. Differences in student grades and gender were also examined in this research. The research has used survey methods. The survey was carried out on 97 students at one of the elementary schools in Malang City. The students who participated were those in grades 4, 5 and 6. A questionnaire containing 35 statement items measured students' motivation toward science learning. The analysis uses ANOVA to measure differences in motivation based on grade, gender, and interactions between grade and gender. There is no influence of grade and gender on students' motivation to learn science. On average, students' science learning motivation is good. Female students dominate the overall motivation score (M), active learning strategies (ALS), self-efficacy (SE), performance goal (PG), and science learning value (SLV), while Achievement goal (AG) and learning environment stimulation (LES) dominate the male student scores. The student's PG was weak. This indicates that students study science not to improve their performance but to get attention and be considered the best by others.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to describe the types of student errors in solving numeracy literacy problems of graph representation models. This study used a mixed methods research design with a sequential exploratory type. The data collection techniques used were tests and interviews. The participants in this study were 30 elementary school students tested and six students selected by purposive sampling to be interviewed. The results showed that students experienced conceptual errors and procedural errors. In conceptual errors, 40% of students make errors in reading data, 43% between data, and 60% of students make errors beyond data. Conceptual errors occur when students cannot understand the context of the problem, cannot read the data, do not master the basic concepts of statistics, and do not understand number patterns. In procedural errors, 63% of students make errors in reading data, 73% of students make errors in reading between data, and 80% of students make errors in reading beyond data. Procedural errors occur when students are wrong in choosing the solution procedure, calculating, and predicting. Therefore, educators need to design appropriate learning strategies to minimize errors made by students in numeracy literacy questions on graph representation models, such as applying contextual learning-based numeracy problems. Keywords: student errors, graphic literacy, numeracy literacy, elementary school. AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan jenis-jenis kesalahan siswa dalam menyelesaikan soal literasi numerasi model representasi grafik. Abstract

Mathematics is closely related to science because both require the ability to analyze, think logically, and systematically to understand. This study explores students' level of abstraction thinking in understanding the concept of exponent numbers and its implementation in science. This research uses a qualitative approach. The subjects in this study were students of the master's program in basic education. The data collection techniques used were tests and interviews. The results showed differences in identifying exponent numbers in low and high abstraction level students. Low abstraction level students perform problem-solving stages, such as identifying and writing down every information listed in the problem, using mathematical symbolization, performing number operations according to problem understanding, and checking again. Meanwhile, high abstraction level students performed problem-solving stages, such as identifying every piece of information in the problem without writing it on the worksheet, not writing the results of their understanding explicitly on the worksheet, not writing explicitly the model to be used, performing number operations without paying attention to the type of number because they already understood and they made a conclusion. Both level students applied the concept of exponent numbers in science for writing units and density.
