Abstract

The development of visual-based digital media has made nonverbal communication an important element in conveying messages, especially in video content on the YouTube platform. One content that displays the dominance of nonverbal communication is "Mount Agung, Atap Negeri Bali Part 3" by Fiersa Besari. The problems in this study are: (1) what forms of nonverbal communication are displayed, (2) how is nonverbal communication delivered, and (3) how is the meaning of the story conveyed to the audience. This study aims to: (1) determine the forms of nonverbal communication, (2) analyze the way nonverbal communication is delivered, and (3) understand the meaning of the story in the content. The research method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with content analysis techniques, through video observation, visual documentation, and in-depth interviews with five audience members. The analysis is guided by three theoretical frameworks: kinesics, theory of emotional expression, and psychoanalytic theory. The results show that nonverbal communication is displayed through three primary forms: facial expressions (such as seriousness and awe), body gestures (including slowed steps, leaning forward, and clenched fists), as well as lighting and visual composition (natural lighting, mist, shadows, and wide-angle shots). These elements play a role in conveying messages of struggle, self-reflection, and the relationship between humans and nature. Nonverbal communication is also able to build emotional experiences and strengthen the meaning of the story without relying on verbal communication. The findings demonstrate that facial expressions convey exhaustion, serenity, and amazement, while body language communicates physical effort, tenacity, and interpersonal connections. Visual lighting and composition create a contemplative atmosphere that reinforces humility and reverence toward nature. This study concludes that nonverbal communication is a key element in forming reflective narratives and emotional closeness between creators and audiences in audiovisual travel documentary content.

Abstract

Preservation of regional languages is increasingly challenged by globalization, particularly in educational settings where communication barriers may reduce student engagement. This study aims to identify interpersonal communication strategies used by Sundanese language teachers to create a conducive classroom environment at State Senior High School 1 Sumber based on DeVito’s five dimensions of interpersonal communication: openness, empathy, support, positivity, and equality. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and document analysis involving one Sundanese language teacher and four grade XI students. Data validity was ensured through triangulation, member checking, and audit trails, while data were analyzed using the Miles and Huberman interactive model. Findings show that teachers apply all five dimensions contextually. Openness is demonstrated through self-disclosure to build trust. Empathy is reflected in adapting mixed-language use and understanding students’ linguistic backgrounds. Support is provided through motivation, reinforcement, and game-based learning. Positivity is created through icebreakers and constructive responses to student errors. Equality is implemented by ensuring fair participation and inclusive communication within Sundanese cultural etiquette. The integration of these interpersonal communication strategies effectively fosters a supportive and engaging learning environment while contributing to regional language preservation in broader educational context.

Abstract

This study analyzes the creation of meanings of resistance and social criticism in the lyrics of the song "Bayar Bayar Bayar" by the band Sukatani, which went viral in the Indonesian digital public sphere. This study uses Roland Barthes's semiotics approach to interpret the meanings on the three levels of denotation, connotation, and myth. The data in this study were song lyrics, which were qualitatively analyzed with a descriptive-interpretive method. At the denotative level, it refers to the practice of "paying" in various activities involving the police. On the connotative level, repetition of "pay" suggests the idea that extortion has become an informal mechanism that is already established and practiced between society and the police. The myth level indicates the normalization of social reality, which is perceived as a practice of extortion that is common, and not usually critically examined. The phenomenon of viral popularity of "Bayar Bayar Bayar" affirms that music is the space of symbolic resistance that articulates the public's dissatisfaction with the abuse of power and violation of public rights. This study adds a value to communication and semiotics research in which song lyrics have become a space for producing meaning, social criticism and ideology in the digital sphere.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of self-disclosure among introverted students through the use of second Instagram accounts as an alternative medium for interpersonal communication. In the digital era, social media has become a dominant platform for identity expression; however, it also creates social pressure that influences how individuals manage their personal information. The objective of this research is to explore the forms of self-disclosure, the factors influencing its use, and the personal meanings attached to second Instagram accounts among introverted students. A qualitative phenomenological approach was employed, involving in-depth interviews with five purposively selected students and digital observation of their second Instagram account activities. The data were analyzed using thematic analysis based on DeVito's self-disclosure theory. The findings reveal that self-disclosure occurs in various emotional forms, including positive, negative, and neutral expressions, often conveyed through stories, captions, and visual content. The main factors driving the use of second accounts include the need for privacy, emotional safety, selective audience control, and psychological comfort. The second Instagram account is interpreted as a safe digital space that enables emotional release, self-reflection, and controlled identity management without social judgment. The study concludes that second Instagram accounts function as a strategic communication tool for introverted students to regulate self-disclosure and maintain emotional well-being. This research contributes to interpersonal communication studies by highlighting the role of digital privacy spaces in shaping authentic self-expression among introverted individuals.

This study employed a qualitative case study approach by in-depth interviews with customers and members of the coffee community using the case study method. The findings indicate that the most dominant strategies in building a brand image and emotional closeness with consumers are the elements of personal selling, public relations and interactive marketing. Meanwhile, advertising and sales promotion have not been optimally applied, as Kopi Ratu Asih is more relies on marketing through community-based communication, word-of-mouth communication, and limited use of digital media as a medium to communicate with the community. Abstract

This study explores how Tempo.co framed the issue of racism involving the K-pop girl group Kiss of Life following a live broadcast themed “old-school hip hop vibes” in April 2025. The controversy emerged after the group was accused of cultural appropriation toward the Black community, resulting in the loss of more than 200,000 social media followers. The purpose of this study is to understand the framing strategy employed by Tempo.co and its impact on readers’ perceptions in Indonesia. The study applies framing analysis based on the model developed by Robert N. Entman, using a descriptive qualitative approach. The data consist of four Tempo.co articles published between April 6 and 9, 2025, complemented by in-depth interviews with fans of Kiss of Life. The findings indicate that Tempo.co consistently framed the case as a serious issue of racism through four key framing elements: defining the problem as cultural appropriation, diagnosing the cause as cultural ignorance, making moral judgments from various public perspectives, and emphasizing the perceived inadequacy of the group’s apology. This framing was found to be effective in enhancing readers’ understanding of the complexity of racism within the K-pop industry, while maintaining journalistic neutrality.
