Abstract

Abstract

The novel written by Toshikazu Kawaguchi with the title Before the Coffee Gets Cold uses a Japanese background, or rather Tokyo. The author explains that there is one located in a small alley in Tokyo. The age of the cafe is long enough or even you could say it's quite old. This research aims to identify idiomatic expressions in the novel. Idiomatic expression is a type of informal language which has a different meaning from the meaning of the words in that expression. “Hold Your Tongue” this idiom does not actually mean that you have to put your finger in your mouth and hold your tongue, it means that you should not talk. The theory used in this research is the theory from McCarthy and O'Dell (2010), where McCharty and O'Dell proposed 7 types of idioms, namely: similes, binomials, trinomials, euphemisms, proverbs, cliches, and fixed statements. This research uses a qualitative data analysis method based on Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). Data was taken from Toshikazu Kawaguchi's novel "Before the Coffee Gets Cold" and analyzed by reading the novel as much as possible and understanding all the conversations. The researcher categorized several conversations into types of idioms in the novel Before the Coffee Gets Cold. The results of this research show that there are 24 examples of simile in the text. In idiom Binomial, there are 11 examples of binomial in the text. In idiom Proverbs, there are 4 examples of binomial in the text.  In idiom trinomial, there are no examples of trinomials in the text. In idiom euphemism, there are no examples of euphemisms in the text. In idiom cliché, there are 6 examples of binomial in the text. And the last, idiom Fixed statements there are 13 examples of binomial in the text. In all these types of idioms, contextual meaning is how the use and combination of these words provide color, nuance, and additional meaning in the text. They help to depict situations, characters, or messages in the story more deeply and creatively. Keywords: idiom, idiomatic expression, novel

Abstract

This study aims to uncover the praxis of singularity and self-identity (kedirian) as presented in a short story titled Aroma Tanah Moncongloe (ATM). This research uses a descriptive-qualitative method by applying the post-marxist perspective by Antonio Negri and Jean-Luc Nancy. The results signified that there is a labeling of identity constructed by the state as a form of uniformity that is in line with the empire or external power. This uniformity can be seen from the identity of former political prisoners who are isolated and find it difficult to find work. Through the concept of singularity and identity, the existence of political prisoner (ex-tapol) in turn is seen as bad, evil, and can pollute a clean society. On the other hand, this stigma forms a community of ex-tapol who were marginalized politically, socially, and economically. Furthermore, in the subject’s effort to grasp the singularity, there are two indications, shown by Nanni and the Moncongloe Tapol Community (KTM). Nanni is not tied to a single identity as a child (genealogical-biological), but tend to be an open-minded, rational, and trusting teacher (sociological). Meanwhile, KTM stands outside the global political order or empire which minimizes them being entangled in the global capitalist system.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the perceptions and experiences of science students in using artificial intelligence (AI) technology as an assistive medium in learning English. The research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, conducted at STKIP Darud Da’wah Wal Irsyad (DDI) Pinrang. The study participants consist of eight students from various science study programs who have used AI applications such as Grammarly, ChatGPT, and Duolingo as part of their learning process. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, and then analyzed thematically using Braun & Clarke’s approach. The findings indicate that AI serves as an adaptive learning facilitator, enhances learning autonomy, and promotes the development of writing and speaking skills in English. Students expressed positive responses towards AI due to its ability to provide instant feedback and personalization features. However, challenges were also identified, including AI’s limitations in understanding specific scientific terms and technical obstacles related to interface and internet connectivity. This study concludes that AI is effective as a learning companion for English language acquisition among science students, but its use needs to be supported by curriculum integration and continuous lecturer guidance.

Abstract

This study investigates the effectiveness of Digital Game-Based Learning (DGBL) in improving students’ grammar mastery in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context. The integration of digital games into language instruction has gained increasing attention as an innovative pedagogical approach that promotes interactive, engaging, and student-centered learning environments. This research employed a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group involving two intact classes of tenth-grade students. The experimental group received grammar instruction through Wordwall-based DGBL activities, while the control group was taught using conventional teaching methods. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests to measure students’ grammar achievement. The results were analyzed using statistical procedures to determine the effectiveness of the treatment. The findings indicate that students in the experimental group showed significantly higher improvement in grammar performance compared to those in the control group. This suggests that the implementation of DGBL, particularly through Wordwall, can effectively enhance students’ understanding and retention of grammatical structures. Furthermore, the study highlights that DGBL not only improves cognitive outcomes but also increases students’ motivation and engagement in learning English. Therefore, it is recommended that English teachers integrate digital game-based platforms into classroom instruction to create more interactive and meaningful learning experiences.
