Abstract

Stunting is a serious problem and is also a major nutritional problem. The problem of stunting has a quite serious impact. It can be short-term related to morbidity and mortality in infants and toddlers, medium-term related to low intellectual and cognitive ability, and long-term related to the quality of human resources and degenerative disease problems in adulthood. The average prevalence of stunting in Indonesia from 2015 to 2017 was 31.4%, far above the WHO limit of 20%. The government with Presidential Decree No. 42/2013 has established a national movement for the first 1000 days of life to improve the nutritional status of toddlers as an effort to handle stunting in Indonesia. Because of the mothers' lack of knowledge about stunting, we were moved to do community service in Medan Sunggal District. Based on this thought, this community service activity is carried out to educate women (community) about the importance of good and correct food processing regarding nutrition/nutrition intake for toddlers by making mothers health cadres in the family in the application of functional food processing from natural ingredients such as moringa leaves and mung beans for stunting prevention in Medan Sunggal District.

Abstract

Abstract: The high number of cases of Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) is linked to several causes, such as low-income levels and unstable employment (poverty), which result in families' inability to meet the nutritional needs of pregnant women. Low education levels affect the thinking and understanding of pregnant women regarding the importance of nutrition during pregnancy, as well as the limited access to quality healthcare services, including antenatal care facilities, which can lead to delays in the early detection and treatment of CED. This condition needs immediate intervention to anticipate the long-term impacts that can result in risks for both the mother and the newborn who do not receive adequate nutrition. To address this issue, it is necessary to implement a Stunting Prevention Movement program, which includes the provision of supplementary feeding (PMT), education on stunting and balanced nutrition, assistance with entrepreneurship training, and business simulations with a relevant theme.

Abstract

Beetroot (Beta vulgaris L.) is a cultivated plant with medicinal properties, containing bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, and saponins that are known to exhibit antibacterial activity. Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Streptococcus mutans pose significant clinical challenges due to antibiotic resistance and their association with nosocomial infections and dental caries, respectively. This study aimed to evaluate the antibacterial activity of ethyl acetate extract of beetroot against MRSA (ATCC 43300) and Streptococcus mutans (ATCC 25175) using the disc diffusion method. Simplicia characterization revealed a water content of 13.15%, water-soluble extract of 42.5%, ethanol-soluble extract of 44.8%, total ash of 12.56%, and acid-insoluble ash of 1.81%. Phytochemical screening confirmed the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, steroids, saponins, and tannins. Antibacterial testing at concentrations of 125, 250, and 500 mg/ml showed inhibition zones of 8.3, 8.7, and 11.5 mm against MRSA, and 7.5, 8.4, and 10.3 mm against S. mutans, respectively. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined to be 125 mg/ml for both bacterial strains. These findings suggest that the ethyl acetate extract of beetroot possesses promising antibacterial activity ranging from moderate to strong category.

Abstract

Background: Inflammation is a normal protective response to tissue injury caused by physical trauma, chemical exposure, or microbial agents. When excessive, this response may worsen tissue damage and require treatment. Interest in medicinal plants as alternative anti-inflammatory agents remains high because conventional nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, although effective, may cause adverse effects. Puguntano herb (Picria fel-terrae Lour.) contains flavonoids, saponins, tannins, glycosides, and steroids or triterpenoids that may contribute to anti-inflammatory activity. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of the methanolic extract of puguntano herb in male white rats with λ-carrageenan-induced paw edema and to identify the most effective tested dose. Methods: An experimental design was used in twenty-five healthy male rats divided into five groups. The negative control received 0.5% Na-CMC, the positive control received sodium diclofenac 2.25 mg/kg body weight, and the treatment groups received extract doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight. Acute inflammation was induced by intraplantar injection of 1% λ-carrageenan. Paw volume was measured with a digital plethysmometer for 360 minutes. Percentage of inflammation and percentage of inhibition were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s test. Results: The methanolic extract showed anti-inflammatory activity at all tested doses. A dose-dependent pattern was observed, with greater edema suppression at higher doses. The 200 mg/kg body weight dose produced the strongest effect and showed activity comparable to sodium diclofenac. Conclusion: The methanolic extract of puguntano herb demonstrated anti-inflammatory potential in this model, with the 200 mg/kg body weight dose as the most effective treatment for further preclinical study
