Abstract

The implementation of medical waste management policies at the laboratory level still faces challenges in the form of non-compliance with operational standards, limited resources, and weak evaluative monitoring. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of medical waste management policies at the UPTD Puskesmas in Jambi City. This study uses a case study method, with a qualitative approach, where the sampling technique used is purposive sampling. Total number of informants in this study is 20 people. Data obtained from interviews, observations, and document analysis will be analyzed thematically to identify emerging patterns, themes, and issues related to medical waste management policies. As a result of data management, there are several regulations for medical waste management at the UPTD Puskesmas in Jambi City, starting from the Law on Environmental Protection and Management, Presidential Regulations, Ministerial Regulations, and SOPs for the Puskesmas themselves. Medical waste management is carried out through several stages, starting from sorting, internal transportation, temporary storage, to external transportation and processing involving third parties. There are challenges faced in medical waste management, including untrained human resources, budget constraints, and inconsistent external transportation schedules. Based on the results of the analysis and discussion regarding the effectiveness of medical waste management policies at the UPTD Labkesda Jambi City, it can be concluded that the Regulatory and Implementation Aspects of the UPTD Labkesda Jambi City already have a strong regulatory basis, both externally and internally and Cooperation Agreements with third parties. However, there is still a gap between written policies and implementation in the field, so that the effectiveness of the policy has not reached its optimal point. The Human Resources Aspect shows that the quality and quantity of human resources are the main determinants in waste management. The Infrastructure Aspect shows that the facilities are quite adequate, but more modern and sustainable waste management is needed.

Abstract

The abundance of natural materials has attracted the attention of numerous researchers, who are now developing them into effective adsorbents for waste treatment applications. The waste stream in question includes laundry liquid waste from workshops, which is discharged directly into the environment via soil or drainage channels without any form of pretreatment. The lead content (Pb) in workshop laundry liquid waste is hazardous if discharged into the environment because it is difficult to degrade. This study investigates a filtration media composed of a combination of natural adsorbents—coconut shell charcoal, pumice stone, and hair waste as an option for treating workshop laundry liquid waste. This research was conducted in January 2021 and focuses specifically on its effectiveness in reducing Pb levels. Adsorbents are arranged in a 60 cm diameter barrel with a height of 40 cm for each adsorbent. Laboratory analysis for the lead test method according to SNI 6989.8.2009 with Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (SSA) shows a decrease in Pb levels starting from the control to the first repetition, second repetition, and third repetition, where the final results show that Pb levels are safe to be discharged into the environment because they are below the environmental quality standards based on the Regulation of the Minister of Environment of the Republic of Indonesia Number 5 of 2014 concerning Wastewater Quality Standards, which is a maximum of 0.03 mg/L. Filtration A showed a Pb level of 0.021 (50% decrease), and Filtration B showed a Pb level of 0.106 (80% decrease)

Abstract

Climate change represents a significant global crisis affecting human well-being, with over 59% of youth reporting extreme concern. This study aimed to investigate factors contributing to climate anxiety among adolescents in Medan City, Indonesia, a region vulnerable to climate-related challenges. A cross-sectional study was conducted between February and April 2024, involving 372 adolescents aged 12 to 19 years from Medan City. Data on sociodemographic characteristics, climate change knowledge, attitudes, and anxiety levels were collected using an online questionnaire. Statistical analyses included univariate descriptions and chi-square tests. Significant associations were observed between climate anxiety and gender, education level, sources of information, knowledge, and attitudes. Males exhibited lower odds of experiencing anxiety compared to females (OR = 0.472, p = 0.001). Higher education (p = 0.003), use of electronic media as an information source (OR = 0.466, p = 0.029), strong climate change knowledge (OR = 3.933, p < 0.001), and positive attitudes toward climate action (OR = 7.269, p < 0.001) were associated with increased anxiety. This study highlights the complex relationship between adolescents’ understanding of climate change and their emotional responses, emphasizing the necessity for targeted interventions to address climate anxiety within this demographic.

Abstract

One plant that is believed to have anti-diabetic effects is grapes (Vitis vinifera), which contains polyphenol compounds. The antioxidant and anti-postprandial hyperglycemics of grape extract show potential in treating diabetes. This study is an experimental study that aims to explore grape extract extracts as antioxidants through testing (DPPH, ABTS, LC-MS/MS). Based on the test results, grape extract contains very high phytochemicals, including terpenoids and alkaloids, and antioxidant test results found DPPH with an average IC50 value of 21.49 g / mL and at the lowest concentration (6.25 g / mL). The GFE also showed the highest antioxidant activity against ABTS trapping with an average IC50 value of 74.07 g/mL and LC-MS/MS results obtained grape extract samples containing 0.00001% chlorogenic acid and querce-tin compounds of 0.00012%.

Abstract

Mental health is an issue that is often discussed during the Covid-19 pandemic. It is critical to understand mental health for realizing its beneficial aspects. Early detection or screening of mental health status is an excellent step to prevent mental health problems. The researchers are interested in screening mental health problems in groups of adults and the elderly. This research design is a descriptive study with a cross-sectional data collection approach. The population in this study were all residents on Jalan Pasar VII Padang Bulan, Medan. The research sample was 139 people who were recruited by non-probability sampling with purposive sampling technique. Data collection was carried out from August to December 2021. The questionnaire used in this study is the Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS 42) questionnaire, which is a tool for measuring stress, anxiety, and depression levels which contains 42 questions. This study shows that from 139 respondents, 54 people (38.85) suffer from mental health problems. Types of mental health problems experienced by respondents were stress as much as 32 people (23%), 54 people (38.85%) experienced anxiety, and 36 people experienced depression (25.9%). It is crucial for the community to educate themselves on how to manage their mental health in a healthier way.

Abstract

Background: Medical laboratories represent high-risk working environments for Laboratory-Acquired Infections (LAIs) due to daily interactions with infectious specimens. In Indonesia, this challenge is compounded by a high burden of infectious diseases and gaps between occupational safety regulations and field practices. Objective: This study aims to analyze the factors influencing infectious disease transmission among laboratory workers in Indonesia and evaluate the effectiveness of compliance with safety standards. Method: This study utilized a Literature Review method following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. Literature searches were conducted across Google Scholar, PubMed, ResearchGate, and Garuda databases for original research articles published between 2017 and 2026. A total of 15 selected articles were synthesized narratively. Results: The primary factors identified include the level of compliance in using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), knowledge and attitudes toward Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), as well as management factors such as training and supervision. Inappropriate use of PPE and unsafe practices, such as manual needle recapping, emerged as critical risks for transmission. Conclusion: The risk of infection transmission is multifactorial, encompassing individual, behavioral, and work environment elements. Strengthening a safety culture supported by PPE logistical backing and strict supervision is essential to protect laboratory personnel.
