Abstract

Oryctes rhinoceros is one of the main pests in oil palm crops. Such pest attacks can reduce production until 69%, even causing 25% of young plants to die. Control efforts conducted by smallholders or large companies generally use synthetic insecticides. To reduce the effects of synthetic insecticides, one of the alternatives that can be used in the technique of pest control O. rhinoceros is by the used of natural insecticides. One of the plants that can be used as a natural insecticides is piper betle forest (Piper aduncum L.).This research aims to intended to find out the ability of the extract of piper betle forest in extermination larvae O. rhinoceros of oil palm crops. The research was start since March 2017 to June 2017 at the Pest Laboratory Plants and Experiment Station Technical Implementation Unit Agriculture Faculty University of Riau. Experimentally using Completely Randomized Factorial Design (RAL) with three factor and five replications were used in the research. The first factor were S1 (Flour leaf of piper bettle), second S2 (Flour fruit of piper bettle), and S3 (Flour twig of piper bettle). Each unit of the experiment uses two methods application. The first method is application of food mixing and the second is application of watering method. The result showed that flour fruit of piper bettle with the application food mixing method and application of watering method with two method can to murder up to 92% and 80% of the larvae O. rhinoceros, with an average initial time of death of 12 hours and 28 hours. Flour fruit of piper bettle can use that effective controls of the larvae O. rhinoceros on oil palm crops because it has caused the death rate of larvae O. rhinoceros exceeds 80%.

Abstract

Oil palm is a very significant industrial plant in producing vegetable oils that require high levels of nutrients in its cultivation. Cultivation of oil palm yield can produce industrial waste, the oil palm empty trunks (TKKS) which have the potential to supply nutrients to oil palm land. The placement of empty trunks at various depths is expected can give effect to the population of Oryctes rhinoceros L pre-adult stage and chemical soil properties. This research was conducted on oil palm plantation in PT. Perkebunan Nusantara V Sei Galuh Tapung, Kampar, Riau from July to October 2017. The aim of this research is to examine the effect of empty trunks placement against the Oryctes rhinoceros L population development and chemical soil properties. This research was done using a randomized experiment design complete with the treatment of the depth empty trunks placement (placement of oil palm empty trunks on the ground at the depth of 10 cm, 20 cm, and 30 cm) which is repeated four times. The observed parameters include the population of infestation of Oryctes rhinoceros L (population of eggs, larvae and pupae) and soil chemical properties (soil pH, C-organic, N-total, P-total and K-total). The results showed that empty trunks placed below the surface at various depths affected the Oryctes rhinoceros L population. Placement of TKKS depth in the soil cannot be infested by Oryctes rhinoceros L. Placement of empty trunks at the depth of the soil tends to increase pH (from very acidic categories to acidic categories) and total K (from the low category to very high category), is not effected on C-organic and N-total and can reduce P-total (from the very high category to the high category) if compared to the placement of empty trunks on the ground.Key words : Chemical Soil properties, Oryctes rhinoceros L., Oil palm Empty trunks, Soil depth

Abstract

The brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens) is currently a very noxious pest insect and it threatened the self sufficience of rice in Indonesia. Innovation of control technology is urgently needed to be developed. Objective of the study was to determine mortality-effect of the wood fly-ash obtained from pulp factory in Riau against N. lugens and its predator complex. A bioassay of the wood fly-ash was done in the laboratory to determine its activity against the test insects. A randomized complete block design (RCBD) experiment with three treatments —fly-ash 40 kg/ha, botanical insecticide containing of root extract of Derris eliptica, and control— with five replications was conducted at a paddy field in Sleman District Yogyakarta. Results showed that the wood fly-ash was toxic against N. lugens: LD50 at 72 hours after treatment were 4.84 and 43.26 g/m2, respectively. As compared with control and botanical insecticide of D. eliptica, the wood fly-ash was significantly more effective for controlling the N. lugens but relatively safe against predator complex. Dusting of the wood fly-ash at rate of 40 kg/ha effectively reduced population of N. lugens within 2 days but did not significantly reduce population of the predator complex namely spiders (Lycosa sp., Oxyopes sp., Callitrichia sp., Argiope sp., and Tetragnatha sp.), Coccinellidae (Menochilus sexmaculatus and Verania sp.), Cicindelidae (Ophionea sp.), and Staphylinidae (Paederus fuscipes).
