Abstract

Abstract

Coal fly ash (CFA) can be used as a control agent of brown plant hopper (BPH) Nilaparvata lugens (Hemiptera; Delphacidae). This study was aimed to investigate the physiological disorders in BPH when exposed to CFA. The research was conducted by carrying out tests covering the mortality of BPH, measurement of BPH weight before and after CFA treatment, an analysis of the moisture content in BPH, an analysis of the BPH tissue, and a chemical analysis of BPH. The results of the study showed that the mortality rate of BPH after treatment was 71%. The physiological disorders due to CFA treatment was indicated by a 67.04% weight reduction as opposed to a 6.9% weight increase on the control specimens. The average moisture content of the treated BPH was significantly lower than that of the control specimens. CFA caused a shrinkage of body tissues and an increase in the contents of silica and alumina on BPH.

Abstract

Rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros) is the main pest of various crops, especially Arecaceae. This research aims to obtain the best growing media of the Arecaceae for the growth of O. rhinoceros larvae. This research expected was designed using a complete randomized design with 5 treatments and 4 replications. The treatment used was different media growth from Arecaceae plants namely palm oil, coconut, sago, and areca, chopped stem, as well as topsoil as control. Parameters measured included individual weight gain of larvae, larval length, a width of O. rhinoceros larvae, with supporting data of soil temperature and humidity, and chemical analysis of organic matter (C-Organic, total N, P-total, and K-Total). The results of the study showed that the growing media of oil palm stem chopped tends to be the most suitable for the growth of O. rhinoceros larvae in case of individual weight increased of larvae (8,8 ± 0,38 g), the length size of larvae (6,15 ± 0,82 cm), and the body width of larvae (1,05 ± 1 cm), and followed by the less and less suitable of the following media growing from chopped stem: coconut, sago, and areca. Thus, oil palms supports the growth of O. rhinoceros more than coconut. This information is important for pest management in smallholders oil palm plantation where oil palms are usually planted along with coconut plants.

Abstract

Fruit flies, Bactrocera spp., are the primary pests on chili plants (Capsicum annuum Linnaeus). A safe and effective control uses traps combined with an attractant from basil leaf oil (Ocimum basilicum Linnaeus). This study aimed to determine the attractiveness of basil leaf oil against fruit flies at several different doses. This research was carried out in Organic Chemistry Laboratory STIFARM Padang, in Tabek Patah Tanah Datar area West Sumatra, and in the Pest Disease Observation and Development of Biological Agents Laboratory, Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, from June to August 2020. The treatment was in the form of different doses of basil leaf oil, which was 0,5 ml per trap, 1.0 ml per trap, 1.5 ml per trap, 2.0 ml per trap, and 2.5 ml per trap. The experiment used a completely randomized design with five treatments and three replications. This study found two species of fruit flies around chili plants, namely Bactrocera papayae and Bactrocera carambolae, which were dominated by male B. papayae. The traps containing 1.5 ml of basil leaf oil attracted the most fruit flies. Temperature and humidity significantly affect the abundance of individual fruit flies.
