Abstract

Application of various synthetic insecticides to control fire caterpillar (Setora nitens) on palm oil plantation has negative impact on predator Eocanthecona furcellata, the natural enemy of fire caterpillar. Profenofos, deltamethrin and cypermethrin insecticides have negative effect because they can reduce population of E. furcellata. The research was conducted using contact method with concentration of 2 ml.l-1 and water as a control with 7 days in observation time. Generallly, the result of the research showed that synthetic insecticides have toxicity on E. furcellata. The profenofos had an effect on the total mortality of E. furcellata up to 63.33%, cypermethrin up to 59.99% and deltamethrin up to 53.33%. The female significantly was more tolerant than male. It is necessary to choose suitable insecticide that are not only effective in controlling S. nitens but also safe for natural enemies.

Abstract

Fruit flies, Bactrocera spp., are the primary pests on chili plants (Capsicum annuum Linnaeus). A safe and effective control uses traps combined with an attractant from basil leaf oil (Ocimum basilicum Linnaeus). This study aimed to determine the attractiveness of basil leaf oil against fruit flies at several different doses. This research was carried out in Organic Chemistry Laboratory STIFARM Padang, in Tabek Patah Tanah Datar area West Sumatra, and in the Pest Disease Observation and Development of Biological Agents Laboratory, Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, from June to August 2020. The treatment was in the form of different doses of basil leaf oil, which was 0,5 ml per trap, 1.0 ml per trap, 1.5 ml per trap, 2.0 ml per trap, and 2.5 ml per trap. The experiment used a completely randomized design with five treatments and three replications. This study found two species of fruit flies around chili plants, namely Bactrocera papayae and Bactrocera carambolae, which were dominated by male B. papayae. The traps containing 1.5 ml of basil leaf oil attracted the most fruit flies. Temperature and humidity significantly affect the abundance of individual fruit flies.

Abstract

Rhinoceros beetle (Oryctes rhinoceros) is the primary pest of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.). Applying oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) and various other organic materials to cultivated land is assumed to support the growth of rhinoceros beetles. The study aimed to determine the suitability of organic matter as a place for rhinoceros beetle larvae to live. The research was carried out experimentally using a completely randomized design (RBD) with eight treatments and four replications. The treatment was in the form of OPEFB, rice husk, sawdust, OPEFB + rice husk, OPEFB + sawdust, OPEFB + rice husk + sawdust, and OPEFB + rice husk + sawdust without composting. The results showed that the growth of rhinoceros beetle larvae tended to be best on an organic material combination of OPEFB + rice husk + sawdust without being composted. Meanwhile, rice husk is the most unsuitable organic material for developing rhinoceros beetle larvae. Applying organic matter to palm land should be composted beforehand to reduce Rhinoceros beetle infestation.

Abstract

Gold snail (Pomacea canaliculata L.) is the main pest of rice plants in Empat Balai Village, Kuok District, Kampar Regency. Farmers in Empat Balai Village experience gold snail infestation every year, which has an impact on production. The purpose of community service activities is to conduct community service by counseling and controlling carp pests in rice fields by utilizing local wisdom in Empat Balai Village. The methods in this service are survey, consolidation, counseling and field practice. The counseling was held at Mushallah Miftahul Jannah in Pulau Empat Hamlet, while the field practice was at the farmer’s house and rice fields in Empat Balai Village. The material provided was about bioecology and how to control the carp snail pest. It was emphasized that the recommended control carp pests are the management of carp pests in the egg phase, because one group of eggs has 500 eggs and control is easier in the egg phase. Control in the egg phase includes making drainage or small ditches, installing bamboo stakes so that the snails lay their eggs there, and collecting the eggs once a week. In the snail phase, involves setting up attractant plant traps (gadung tuber leaf, papaya leaf, and banana leaf), kalambuai traps (kaltrap), installing of irrigated nets, utilizing ducks, and vegetable molluscicides. In addition, preventive measure was taken, such as planting older seedlings. The farmers were very enthusiastic about this activity. As a result, farmers gained additional knowledge about gold snail pests and how to control them, improve farmers skills on gold snail pests control methods by utilizing local wisdom.

Abstract

Chili peppers (Capsicum annuum L.) are an important agricultural commodity whose productivity often decreases due to infestations by armyworm pests (Spodoptera litura Fab.). Soursop leaf extract (Annona muricata L.) has the potential to become an environmentally friendly botanical pesticide because its active compounds have been proven effective in suppressing feeding activity and causing mortality in these pests. This study aims to determine the effective concentration and the optimal application period of soursop leaf powder extract to control S. litura in chili plants. The study was conducted through two experiments. The first experiment used a completely randomized design with six treatments. The experimental data were analyzed using analysis of variance and further tested with the Honest Significant Difference (HSD) test at a 5% level. The second experiment used treatments with different application periods. The experimental data were statistically analyzed using tabulation and presented descriptively in the form of graphs. The research results showed that the effective concentration of soursop leaf powder extract to control S. litura on chili plants is 100 g/l of water, with an initial mortality time of 4.8 hours after application and a 50% lethal time of 42.0 hours after application, with an LC50 of 3.00% and an LC95 of 26.53%. The best application period for soursop leaf powder extract to control S. litura on chili plants is an application period with spraying every 2 days.
