Abstract

AbstractAnalysis of Racism in “12 Years A Slave” Movie Directed By Steve Mcqueen. Racism mostly still happens in many countries, especially the country with a lot of majorities and minority groups with very strict differences in characteristics such as in the United States of America or other European countries. This action is depicted very clearly in racism in 12 years movie. The study aims to analyze racism in 12 years movie directed by Steve Mcqueen. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The result of the study shows that racial prejudice that occurs in 12 Years a Slave Movie happened in the four social aspects of social structure, there are in the aspect of economic life, political and legal process, and in educational aspect. This study also reveals that the novel also reflects the racial prejudice in its social aspects of social structure in Southern America in the 1950s.Keywords: racism, discrimination, characters

Abstract

AbstractThe problem in this research is how the condition of the main character of a mathematical sicentist who suffers from schizophrenia and the efforts made to recover from this illness in the novel A Beautiful Mind. This research focus to Maslow theory about hierarchy of needs in Sylvia Nasar Novel, titled A Beautiful Mind. The method that used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. The data that used in this research is documentation technique. The researcher used Maslow’s theory to analysis the novel. Depend on the analysis, it can be concluded that A Beautiful Mind novel is describes how the condition of mathematical scientist who are battling schizophrenia.Keywords: Hierarchy of Needs, Sylvia Nasar, A Beautiful Mind, Schizophrenia

Abstract

The tourism sector, shopping and culinary tours are part of cultural tourism activities that contributes around 45% of all cultural tourism activities. Gastronomic tourism is defined as the pursuit of eating and drinking experience that is unique and easy to remember. Gorontalo Province has considerable number of potential for gastronomic tourism yet stumbled upon several problems such as human resource, level of education and lack of mentoring in the community. The result of this literary research propose some solutions for those problems including, 1) food mapping, 2) organizing food related events, 3)gastrodiplomacy, 4) physical facilities, and 5) increasing awareness for mastering foreign language. Abstract

This study aims to determine the Social Relations of the Javanese and Bolang Mongondow ethnic communities. This research uses qualitative methods with a descriptive approach. Collecting data on research through direct interviews with informants. The results of this study show that the Javanese and Bolaang Mongondow ethnic communities have had a close relationship through various media such as trade, migration, and various phenomena in the community. The nature of harmony in this multi-ethnicity causes inter-ethnic life to have an open, democratic, tolerant nature, and a willingness to coexist in differences. The relationship between Javanese ethnicities and Bolaang Mongondow is a miniature that has social harmony in Indonesia from the reality of a heterogeneous society that is often hit by waves of social disintegration.

Abstract

The main objective of this community service activity is to increase the knowledge and understanding of the Dumati village community in general about the importance of English language in relation to managing tourist objects. The future of the world tourism industry has such a bright prospect as stated by the World Tourism Organization (WTO), even the world tourism organization estimates that tourism will grow with an average growth of 4.2% per year. One of the regions that will experience the greatest growth rates are countries in Asia, including Indonesia. Of course, it is very important for the parties to receive foreign language assistance to the community in implementing the concept of tourism for the realization of sustainable tourism. And how to do it so that tourists do not experience language barriers so that sustainable tourism can be realized. The current community service uses focus group discussion and in-depth interviews that aims to develop the community’s awareness toward the importance of English language mastery as the key factor for sustainable tourism in Gorontalo. This activity received a very good response and went well. Dumati village officials and the village community were very enthusiastic about participating in this seminar, it was seen from the many people who participated by asking questions and discussing the concept of English language ​​that could be developed in the Embung Dumati tourism village. This community service is hoped to form basic information on how’s the community’s level of English and how to develop from there.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find out the students’ perceptions toward the lecturers’ strategies in teaching listening during pandemic of Covid-19. The research was conducted at English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Social Sciences, Muhammadiyah University of Gorontalo. There were 26 participants in this research who enrolled listening subject. This research used qualitative method and the data were collected by using questionnaire that was designed in Google Form which accomodates 2 aspects, materials and learning activities. The result of the research showed that most of students find difficulties in learning listening through online learning because they do not have high-speed internet to access the material. So, it affected the quality of listening audio-audiovisual because the materials were fully online accessed. But, the students also showed positive and well-motivated attitude during online learning in Listening Subject. Most of students revealed that the materials that the lecturer provided during the process of teaching and learning can significantly improve their understanding to the content of listening materials and also improve their listening skill.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic that has hit the world has had an impact in various fields including education. The application of teaching and learning from home forces educational institutions to switch to digital in implementing learning. The application of learning methods online provides new experiences in current learning methods. Various community responses are present. in response to this relatively new learning system. Rapid digital development and the current emergency situation demands that all stakeholders and all walks of life must adjust to developments. This is of course a common concern in providing solutions to existing problems, so that even in a pademi situation the teaching and learning process can still run smoothly. Digital literacy needs to be carried out extensively (starting from family, school and society), so that all these elements can not only use technology but can also make good and efficient use of it. This research uses a descriptive analysis method. The purpose of this research is to describe related media use. digital, in this case digital literacy, which can be used as an important key in the successful implementation of learning online during a pandemic.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find imagery in William Allingham poems. The method used in analysis this research is descriptive qualitative and technique analyzing data. The analysis of the imagery is intended to deliver a message from the author in order to feel what is felt by the senses of the author contained in his poetry. In addition, the imagery is intended to enable the reader to obtain a concrete picture of what the author or poet wants to convey. Based on research conducted, there are five imagery contained in William Allingham's poem with the title ‘’A Dream, The Eviction and Robin Redbreast” those are visual, tactile, auditory, gustatory and olfactory imagery.

Abstract

In this life, elements of literature can be found in almost every part of human being. Even in some activities with the goal to entertain, such as movies, there are values that are meant to deliver lessons, for example educational values. This research tries to unfold the educational values of the main character, Latte, in the film “Latte and Magic Waterstone” by Regina Walker. This underrated movie on Netflix is filled with many life lesson and values that people needed to be reminded of in today’s fast life. The purpose of the research is to observe the types of educational values existed in the film, especially focused on Latte as the main character. The method used is qualitative study by observing the educational values in the film. The results of this research showed that there are 4 types of educational values dealing with Value of Being consist of 4 data: Honesty, Brave, Confidence, Patience, and there are 3 points in types of educational values dealing with Value of Giving consist of 3 data: Love and Affection, Unselfish, Responsibility. Keywords:         Educational Values, Latte, Main Character, Film

Abstract

This research aims to discover how English for Specific Purposes served the English subject materials at the Tourism department in tertiary education. A needs analysis is carried out to gain information about the student’s perception of English teaching and learning status in the Tourism department. The study's design is descriptive quantitative with a perceptional questionnaire as the primary research data collection instrument. The research participants were the students of the Tourism Department at the Muhammadiyah University of Gorontalo. The results showed that Tourism department students at the Muhammadiyah University of Gorontalo used textbooks that were still oriented towards general English, were not made for their specific department, and were not suited to their level of English mastery. Besides the motivation of students to learn English, the correlation of the English they learn with the needs of English for future work and institutional support also deserves attention. Therefore, developing ESP-based English teaching materials for Tourism students in tertiary institutions becomes a priority.
