Abstract

This study explores the representation of traumatic experiences in H.G. Wells' novel The Island of Doctor Moreau. Traumatic experiences are unpredictable, unpreventable situations that overwhelm victims and disrupt their ability to cope. Literature can provide insights into the range of responses to such overwhelming experiences as a reflection of human existence. The objective of this research is to increase awareness and understanding of trauma and mental illness through the analysis of literary depictions. Using a qualitative research approach, the study examines the traumatic experiences encountered by the protagonist, Edward Prendick, in the novel. The analysis categorizes Prendick's traumatic experiences into three main themes: a) being stranded, drifting away, and lost; b) witnessing death and seeing dead bodies; and c) meeting scary creatures, being attacked, and being terrorized. The findings reveal how the novel portrays the psychological and emotional impact of trauma on the protagonist, highlighting the challenges faced by victims of overwhelming and life-threatening situations. By analyzing the literary representation of trauma, this study aims to foster greater empathy and understanding for those affected by traumatic experiences and mental health issues. The in-depth qualitative analysis of the narrative techniques and thematic elements in the novel contributes to the literature on the literary depiction of trauma and its implications for raising awareness and promoting mental health. Keywords: Traumatic experiences, psychology, novel

Abstract

This paper reports on a research conducted to explore English major students view on becoming a translator as their future profession. The focus is divided into 3 main concerns 1) do  the students consider translator as their profession after graduation? 2)do  the students think they are equipped with enough knowledge on becoming a translator? 3)what elements should the English Department provide to support their career choice?. These concerns were presented in a perceptional questionnaire as the main data collection technique that aims to find out whether the students of English Literature as the University of Muhammadiyah Gorontalo would consider translator as their career. This is a qualitative research with total sampling as the technique of data collection. The subject of the research were 20 students of 6th semester majoring in English Literature at Muhammadiyah University of Gorontalo. The result of the study showed that the students have moderate consideration on choosing a career path of translation. There are several reason behind such thoughts, one of which is they do not think they qualified for becoming a professional translator or choosing the line of work as their future profession. Moreover, they think that the faculty can provide more classes on translation to build both their skills and their confidence on becoming future translators.

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of integrating Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) applications with peer tutoring on student engagement, motivation, and learning outcomes in English language Teaching and learning. Utilizing a mixed-methods approach, the research involved pre- and post-intervention surveys, semi-structured interviews, and systematic observations. Quantitative data revealed significant improvements in students' engagement and motivation, with average scores increasing from 2.0 to 3.9 post-intervention. The standard deviation for engagement decreased from 0.7 to 0.5, indicating more consistent student responses. The qualitative analysis provided deeper insights, highlighting that students found MALL applications like Quizlet and YouTube particularly engaging and effective for learning. The thematic analysis of interviews underscored the benefits of peer tutoring in fostering a supportive learning environment, enhancing both collaborative and individual learning experiences. Excerpts from student interviews revealed increased interest and motivation, with students appreciating the flexibility and interactivity of the applications. These findings align with Vygotsky's theory of social constructivism, emphasizing the role of social interaction in learning. The study concludes that the integration of MALL with peer tutoring not only improves student engagement and motivation but also contributes to better language learning outcomes. This has important implications for educational practices and policies, suggesting that incorporating technology and collaborative learning strategies can enhance language education. Future research should explore long-term effects and scalability of such interventions.

Abstract

This study measures the correlation between the Intensive Training Program (ITP) and the English and Arabic Proficiency Test (EAPT) scores among 100 postgraduate students at IAIN Sultan Amai Gorontalo from four non-language programs. A quantitative method with an ex-post facto design was used, and data analysis was conducted using Spearman’s correlation test. Data were collected through a three-aspect proficiency test: listening (istima’), structure (tarakib), and reading (qira’ah), using a Computer Assisted Test (CAT) application with 140 items. The test results were processed using score conversion and SPSS Version 30. Before the ITP, none of the students achieved the minimum passing score for the EPT (450), and only six passed the APT. After the training, 18% reached the minimum EPT score, and the number of students who passed the APT increased significantly to 32. Correlation analysis showed that ITP effectively improved listening (correlation 0.582; p=0.002) and structure (correlation 0.592; p=0.002) in EPT, but was less effective for reading (correlation 0.085; p=0.686). In contrast, ITP greatly enhanced all aspects of APT: istima’ (correlation 0.972; p=0.000), tarakib (correlation 0.993; p=0.000), and qira’ah (correlation 0.997; p=0.000). The short duration of the training affects its effectiveness, along with students’ educational backgrounds and learning motivation. To enhance efficacy, it is recommended to extend the training duration, provide relevant modules for non-language students, enhance motivation through regular practice, and improve reading instruction methods. ITP positively impacts Arabic and English language proficiency, particularly for APT, suggesting that targeted training can significantly benefit non-language students’ language skills.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the use of the Two Stay Two Stray method on student motivation in learning English in class XI IPA.1 MAN 1 Kabupaten Gorontalo. Method: The methodology used in this study is a quantitative research method with One-Shot Case Study research design which is part of Pre-Experimental Design. Results and Discussion: The results showed that there was a significant influence in the use of the Two Stay Two Stray method on learning motivation in learning English. Conclusions and Implications: Based on the research data and description of the data that has been described, the researcher concludes that: The average student learning rate increases after learning by Two Stay Two Stray method, this is evidenced by the results of the assessment of the learning motivation questionnaire and Two Stay Two Stray method to 27 students as experimental classes, prove that there are 17 students classified as criteria very good and 24 students for Two Stay Two Stray method. The use of the Two Stay Two Stray method has proven effective in enhancing student learning motivation. This means that the method can be more widely implemented in classrooms to encourage higher student engagement and improve their learning outcomes. Teachers who adopt this method can expect increased motivation and active participation from most students
