Abstract

Regional languages, such as Sundanese, are an important part of the cultural identity that shapes the selfhood of a community. However, in the era of globalization, the use of Sundanese among the younger generation faces significant challenges. This study aims to analyze the use of Sundanese in Kampung Pasauran, Banten, in the context of social change and the dominance of national and international languages. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, and document analysis. The respondents consisted of youth aged 15-19 years who were purposively selected. The results show that Sundanese is increasingly rarely used by youth in daily life, with most respondents preferring Indonesian or a mix of Sundanese and Indonesian. Factors influencing this shift include the perception that Sundanese is less modern, the dominance of digital media that promotes the use of Indonesian and English, and the perceived difficulty of learning Sundanese. However, all respondents reported understanding and being able to speak Sundanese, albeit only in limited contexts, such as communication with parents or older relatives. This study underscores the importance of efforts to preserve Sundanese, particularly through education and the strengthening of cultural identity among the younger generation, to prevent further decline in its usage.

Abstract

This study explores the influence of cultural practices on language learning, focusing on how cultural practices, family structures, and societal values affect the way individuals acquire and use a second language. A mixed-method approach was employed, including both qualitative data from semi-structured interviews and participant observation, as well as quantitative data from language proficiency tests and surveys. The findings reveal significant differences in language acquisition patterns across cultural groups, with collectivist cultures emphasizing formal structures and group-oriented learning, while individualistic cultures highlight self-expression and independent study. Cultural values also influence motivation, peer interaction, and classroom dynamics. The study concludes that cultural practices plays a crucial role in shaping language learning experiences and suggests that educators should tailor their approaches to meet the needs of diverse cultural learners.

Abstract

Bilingualism is a prevalent phenomenon in Pandeglang, Banten, where teenagers navigate between the local Sundanese language and the national Indonesian language in various social contexts. This study aims to explore how bilingualism influences the cultural identities of youth in this region. Through qualitative methods, including in-depth interviews and participatory observations, data were collected from 20 teenagers aged 15-18. The study reveals that the use of Sundanese primarily occurs in informal family settings, while Indonesian dominates formal settings like school and public media. Additionally, both languages are creatively integrated in digital spaces, such as social media, where local identity is expressed through Sundanese, and broader national identity through Indonesian. However, challenges in maintaining Sundanese due to the dominance of Indonesian, particularly in urban areas, were noted. The study concludes that bilingualism serves as a bridge between local and national identities, but the sustainability of Sundanese is threatened without strategic interventions, such as incorporating it into formal education and leveraging digital platforms for cultural preservation.
