Abstract

Investment of parasitic worms of captive wildlife was an impact on their health condition. This study was conducted to determine the intensity of parasitic worm infection in wild animals kept by communities in Manokwari, West Papua. The Natif method was used, by centrifuge of 20 birds and 20 mammals (Kangaroo and Deer) faeces collected from the sites. Sampling was carried out from October to November 2016. The analysis of collected faecal samples showed that bird species were not indicated (negatively infected by worm). In mammals, Nematodes and cestodes were found. Identification of existing findings showed that 3 (three) types of worm eggs were found, namely Taenia sp in kangaroos (Macropodidae), Ascaris sp (berembrio), and stronyle sp in deer (Cervus timorensis). The highest parasites intensity was stronyle sp (10 worm eggs) and the lowest intensity was Ascaris sp (3 worm eggs) .The rate of infection and investment of parasitic worm eggs in wild animals in Manokwari was categorised relatively low.

Abstract

Abstract

The research aims to estimate the manure production and calculate the methane gas produced by the pig free-ranging system in Gaya Baru and the surrounding of Wosi Market in Manokwari. This research is conducted from May to June 2018. The methods used in this study are observation, interviews, and literature study. Direct observations in the field are carried out by calculating the pig population and estimating the body weight by measuring body length and chest circumference according to the Winter formula. Furthermore, the calculation of the amount of fresh dung (KTS) of pigs is carried out. The parameter observed in this research is the methane gas produced by the systems. Research is conducted by observation, interview, and literature review with a descriptive statistical approach. The free-ranging pig systems in Gaya Baru and its surroundings produce ammonia at 0.246617 ppm/day, biogas of 10.95m3/year, equivalent to 3996.75m3 per year, and methane of 10.85 m³ per day, or equivalent to 130.18 m³ per year. If this condition is allowed to continue, this will have a social impact, but also environmental and health problems around the research sites.

Abstract

As the definitive regency, Supiori has been separated from Biak Numfor Regency, since 2003. Most of the Supiori Regency area is the Mount Supiori Nature Reserve Area which was stipulated according to the Decree of the Minister of Forestry 525/Kpts/Um/7/82 dated 21 July 1982. In line with the development plan in Supiori, conflicts of interest over the utilisation of forest areas are unavoidable. This has an impact on the condition of existing biodiversity, especially mammalian taxa which are at high risk of being threatened with extinction. Therefore, an assessment of the existence mammalian taxa and their interaction with the potential of forest areas has been carried out using the High Conservation Value - HCV concept approach. Observations were made directly and indirectly on the presence of this mammal species during October 2018. This study succeeded in identifying 16 (sixteen) mammal species belonging to 8 (eight) families that were observed and detected signs of their presence. In accordance with the HCV1 criteria, the forest area in Supiori, both primary forest and secondary forest that has been converted into community plantations, is able to create new habitats for mammal species because there is sufficient food availability there. According to the HCV2 criteria, the observed forest area is still relatively good in supporting the presence of a number of animal species, including groups of mammals. Meanwhile, based on the HCV3 criteria, the karst cave spot in the area is not only a source of water but also a habitat for bats (Emballonura beccarii, Aselliscus tricuspidatus). Considering that most of the area is the area of CA Supiori, the regional development plan for Supiori Regency should provide options for rationalization and changing the status of the area. Therefore, intensive studies need to be carried out to determine which areas in and around the area will be utilized for development activities, and other areas that will be maintained by changing the status of protected areas for the purpose of conserving endemic flora and fauna with high conservation value.
