Abstract

A review of the current literature on curriculum development elucidates that much of the existing work either: (i) focuses on the development of educational resources; (ii) rectifies the concept of curriculum; (iii) or identifies desirable features of development methods without providing any practical guidance that synchronizes the needs of any particular education systems and geographical status where students are living. This paper scrutinizes the development of the Department of English Language Education curriculum of Ar-Raniry State Islamic University (Universitas Islam Negeri Ar-Raniry Banda Aceh) Indonesia in line with Aceh context. It is flexible and evolutionary, and is soundly underpinned by proven theory and practices from contemporary curriculum development concepts. Systematically this article explores three pivotal aspects: educational foundation in Aceh, curriculum development in Indonesia, and an ideal curriculum of the Department of English Language Education, particularly in Aceh context.

In this millennium era, the Internet plays pivotal roles in providing educational access. It serves as a significant tool to communicate, discuss, and even explore various information from a different world and reference. In educational world in most developed countries, the Internet is used as an important educational transformation, especially for those who struggle with times and geographical boundaries. As such, the Internet could flexibly bridge between a Professor and a student to communicate and coordinate with regard to their research progress. Beside its advantages, some educational practitioners have harshly criticized the implication of the Internet used in the educational world. Opponents of the Internet users claim that the Internet could threat anyone, including educational world. Oftentimes the Internet is used to do crimes and other unlawful actions, stealing other people's information and money is one of the tangible examples associated with the Internet. Issues on intellectual and copy rights, and other academic misconducts are also connected to the Internet in the last few years. This paper attempts to provide a brief discussion on the advantages and disadvantages of the Internet in higher education.

This descriptive qualitative study was aimed at discovering English language teachers’ challenges in teaching TOEFL preparation for senior high school students. The data were collected by using an in-depth interview with six experienced and qualified English language teachers teaching TOEFL in the three-state and private senior high schools in Aceh province, Indonesia. Open, axial, and selective coding techniques were used to analyze the data from in-depth interviews. The results show that teachers faced some challenges during teaching TOEFL preparation for senior high school students including students’ different language proficiency, their lack of vocabulary mastery, their fatigue, their passive attitude, class size, and time limitation. The findings recommend the further idea to organize a more organized preparation TOEFL program for high school students that can be integrated into the existing curriculum, and thus it will no longer be viewed merely as an extracurricular program.

Abstract

The issue of professional English as a foreign language (EFL) lecturer in the industrial revolution 4.0 (IR 4.0) era has received considerable attention. However, very few studies on this subject have been conducted in Indonesia, particularly at State Islamic Universities. To address this gap, researchers conducted a qualitative study to examine how EFL lecturers maintain their professionalism in the IR 4.0 era and the curriculum approach that best meets current teaching and learning needs. The researchers applied a purposive sampling approach in selecting the participants for this study. There were 11 EFL lecturers from a state Islamic university in Banda Aceh, Indonesia chosen to participate in this study. The findings of this study indicate that EFL lecturers must continue to learn and improve their digital and technological competency in order to maintain their professionalism. In terms of curriculum approach, EFL lecturers believe that taking an interdisciplinary approach and providing more opportunities for students to focus on applied skills are essential parts of their teaching professionalism in the IR 4.0 era.

Abstract

This study analyzes how students perceive the use of video conferencing software for educational purposes during the epidemic. During a pandemic, the researcher focuses on the students' use of Zoom, Google Meet, and Skype. This study's samples consist of six UIN Ar-Raniry English Language Department students with the online learning experience. This qualitative research collects data through interviews using purposive sampling. Several positive responses revealed that video conferencing software offers numerous advantages during the pandemic. Utilizing Zoom, Google Meet, and Skype is the most effective method for applying online learning throughout the pandemic's hard conditions. However, challenges such as adaptability to technological use, technical difficulties, and lack of computer literacy are inevitable.

Abstract

An evaluation for the development of a paper-based test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) for English Education Department students at one of the colleges in Langsa, Aceh, Indonesia, is necessary, considering their unsatisfactory scores even though the preparation program has been conducted. This research employed context, input, process, and product (CIPP) model developed by Stufflebeam upon the program. Methodologically, interviews, questionnaires, and observation were executed to five TOEFL lecturers and 34 students, while the data obtained were analyzed with the qualitative analysis method of Miles and Huberman. Based on the evaluation of context, the program had an appropriate background, goals, and objectives. Regarding the input, it still had problems related to the availability of resources and facilities. There were no standardized learning materials available, including the broken language laboratory. It affected the process since the lecturers could not maximize the facilities to create an effective learning environment. Eventually, it affected the product since most students could not reach an expected score. Most of the participants agreed that the program needed to be improved. Several improvements can be made to overcome these problems by providing required learning facilities, designing standardized learning materials, and clustering classes in accordance with students’ abilities.

Abstract

Issues surrounding curriculum integration have been discussed worldwide. Some argue that curriculum integration contributes meaningfully to empowering students’ multi knowledge and skills, while others claim that curriculum integration has detrimental effects on teachers and students’ study load. This qualitative study investigates the English teachers’ and Islamic boarding school principals’ perceptions of integrating English subject materials of Curriculum 2013 into the Islamic boarding school curriculum context. Eleven participants (two Islamic boarding school principals and nine English teachers teaching at two Junior Islamic boarding schools in Banda Aceh) were selected purposively. The findings indicate that integrating English materials into the Islamic boarding school curriculum positively contributes to developing students’ general and Islamic-related knowledge. The results also suggest that the integration of English materials into the Islamic boarding school curriculum can be performed by switching the listed materials in the syllabus of Curriculum 2013 with the Islamic-related materials. The study unveils that among these curricula integration challenges are the inadequacy of Islamic-related knowledge that the teachers master and the subject overload. These two main issues are the main challenges to integrating the English materials into the Islamic boarding school curriculum.

Abstract

Educating children in the 21st century is different from it was in the 20st century. Parents in this era face challenges because it is impossible for their children to be away from the Internet and social media. Children become asocial because of their addiction to gadgets and the Internet. However, from the Internet, they may learn different new things that allow them to get information faster than their parents do. Parents must certainly adapt to this change in educating their children so that they are not distracted by the negative effects of incorrect education caused by technological advancements. The purpose of this study is to promote some of the important knowledge that parents must have to educate their children in this century, aside from religious knowledge, as the primary foundation of upbringing in Muslim families. This research undertakes a thorough examination of scholarly work on Islamic education for children and contemporary studies on children's learning in the 21st century. After scrutinizing a range of literature, the researchers identified several pertinent references for this investigation. The results of this study elucidate that in order to effectively nurture their children in the contemporary era, parents are required to possess a profound understanding of Islamic principles alongside a continuous commitment to enhance their comprehension in diverse fields such as parenting techniques, information technology, psychology, and communication strategies.
