Abstract

Progressive Education (PE) aims to promote students' active participation and involvement in the learning process. PE strongly supports learner-centered instruction (LCI), enabling students to be active participants rather than passive recipients of knowledge. Nevertheless, the LCI has not yet gained popularity in the Indonesian school settings, particularly in Modern Islamic Boarding Schools. This enables us to do research on the potential and obstacles of implementing the LCI as required by Progressive Education in Islamic boarding schools. Data for this qualitative study was gathered through Focus Group Discussions (FGDs), in-depth interviews and an online communication with 24 teachers from Islamic Boarding Schools in the province of Aceh. The findings indicate that although worries about the issues of the LCI are still arising, the teachers involved in this research believe that the LCI has promising prospects in the near future. The finding also found that although the LCI is considered an efficient method for facilitating optimal learning, it is deemed to be less successful in some courses.

Abstract

Setelah memilih pendekatan, maka baru menentukan strategi pembelajaran. Tetapi strategi pembelajaran berbeda dengan metode pembelajaran. Strategi pembelajaran dapat dipahami sebagai a plan of operation echieving something (rencana kegiatan untuk mencapai sesuatu). Sedangkan metode pembelajaran adalah a way in achieving something (cara untuk mencapai sesuatu).

Abstract

Reading is a vital language skill that necessitates mastery for knowledge acquisition. However, the focus of students has shifted away from reading due to technological advancements. Despite this, the literacy levels of students in Indonesia are alarmingly low, ranking 74 out of 79 in the PISA Survey 2018. This study aimed to explore the integration of technology in educational settings. Specifically, by implementing a technology-based flipped classroom model, the researcher aimed to encourage and educate junior high school students on the constructive use of smartphones. The primary objective was to investigate whether the adoption of flipped classrooms, combined with technology utilization, could potentially enhance students' reading proficiency. To achieve this goal, an experimental research design was employed, comprising both an experimental group and a control group. Pre-tests and post-tests were conducted for both groups, with the experimental group receiving the flipped classroom intervention, while the control group experienced traditional classroom methods. The findings indicated that the experimental group exhibited superior performance compared to the control group.

Abstract

Flipped learning within blended learning has attracted interest for its potential benefits. However, implementing a fully blended model with in-person synchronous learning remains challenging. Therefore, this mixed-methods study investigates a modified flipped approach using a virtual synchronous classroom environment, replacing traditional face-to-face interaction with online instruction. Specifically, our study focused on its implementation in the context of a Public Speaking class, aiming to explore students experiences and levels of learning anxiety with the modified flipped instructional method. A number of 43 out of 50 English major students from one of the state Islamic universities in Indonesia, in their fifth semester, completed and submitted the questionnaires. The results of the study indicated that the implementation of a virtual synchronous flipped classroom had a dual effect, positively influencing both the advancement of students speaking abilities and the alleviation of their anxiety in speaking English. The students found the Synchronous Virtual Flipped Classroom (SVFC) engaging and intellectually stimulating, recommending its adoption via platforms like Zoom and WhatsApp. While they recognized the benefits of technology, their views varied contextually, particularly regarding social interaction. Despite the advantages, students expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of social presence and sensory experience compared to traditional classrooms. Technical issues further hampered peer interaction and impacted their learning experience. These findings provide useful information regarding the potential and limitations of virtual synchronous flipped classrooms in enhancing speaking skills and managing anxiety in language learning.

Abstract

Islamic Religious Education (PAI) learning has an important role in shaping the character and morality of Muslim individuals. To achieve this goal, an effective learning approach is needed. Effective learning is supported by appropriate learning methods and their impact on student learning outcomes. Some learning methods that can be used are drill, teamwork and role play methods. The drill method is an approach used to strengthen students' understanding of Islamic religious concepts through repeated practice. The teamwork method in PAI learning involves collaboration between students in groups to understand and apply Islamic religious concepts. The role play method in PAI learning involves role simulations where students play certain roles in situations related to the teachings of the Islamic religion. The research results show that the integration of these three methods improves the implementation of learning by creating a more interactive and interesting learning experience, which in turn deepens understanding and strengthens retention of lesson material. This research provides a new contribution to the PAI education literature by showing the potential of interactive learning methods in improving the quality of PAI learning. Carrying out the learning process by determining appropriate methods aims to help students internalize and remember religious information better.
