Abstract

This research aimed to describe students difficulties in presenting spoken exposition text, limited to the use of simple present tense. This research was a descriptive research, conducted in May-June 2017 at MAN 2 Padang. The population was Grade XI of Science program students of MAN 2 Padang. The sample was 38 students chosen by using stratified random sampling method. The research data was the clauses with grammatical mistakes found in the transcript of students speaking, obtained by a speaking test. The result of the research showed that the most frequent difficulties of verbal clauses using simple present tense were subject-verb agreement (51%) and the use of auxiliary verb (18%). The most frequent difficulties of nominal clauses using simple present tense were no verb (71%) and no subject (13%).

Abstract

 Reading is an important skill that is needed to get information from written text. In reading skill, students not only  have to read but they have to comprehend the text in order to get the meaning from the text that they have been read.  Although, many students still have difficulties in comprehending the text and low motivation in reading. It caused that there is a tendency the teacher does not use teaching strategy appropriately. That is why this paper is conducted in order to explain how to use “The Power of Two” strategy in teaching reading for senior high school students’. “The Power of Two” strategy is conducted to help students in comprehending the text by work in pairs so that students can change their mind with each other. This strategy will facilitate students to figure out their problems in reading. It also can make students enjoy and relax in reading process. Thus, students can improve their reading skill ability.

Abstract

This study aimed to find out students’ ability and problem at English Education of Universitas Negeri Padang. This research is designed as descriptive qualitative research. In this study, the researcher focused on the first year students of English Education program in Universitas Negeri Padang in the Academic Year of 2019/2020. There are 20 students as the subject of the research. The process of data collection in this research had to be put in two activities, those are: recording and transcription. The findings of this research indicate that most vowels are pronounced well by the students. There are nine vowels classified as excellent category, they are vowels are vowel /e/ 79,5 (99.4%), vowel /i:/ 78,5 (98.12%), vowel /I/ 78 (97.5%), vowel /ɑ:/ 77,5 (96.9%), vowel /ə/ 76 (95%), vowel /u:/ 75,5 (96.9%), vowel /ɔ:/ 72 (90%), vowel /ɛ:/ 67,5 (84.34%), and vowel /ɑ/ 65 (81.25%). And there are three vowels classified as good category which vowels are vowel /ʌ/ 62 (77.5%), vowel /æ/ 56 (70%), and vowel /ʊ/ 55,5 (69.4%).

Abstract

Abstract This research is a descriptive research that is aimed to describe students’ speaking problems. The research was done at Poltekkes Kemenkes RI Padang. The population of this research were the first year of nursing students at Poltekkes Kemenkes RI Padang. There were 30 students as the sample of this research and chosen by using random sampling technique. The instruments used were the questionnaire (close-ended & open-ended statements) and transcription of video recording. The result of this research showed that disfluency was the significant problem for the students. Then, the significant causes of the speaking problems were inhibition and mother tongue use.Key words: Speaking problem, causes of the speaking problem

Abstract

Abstract Penulisan makalah ini dilatarbelakangi oleh kemampuan membaca teks siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA) yang masih rendah. Kondisi ini disebabkan oleh beberapa hal, diantaranya seperti kurangnya pengetahuan dasar siswa tentang topik yang dibahas dan kurangnya penguasaan kosakata mereka. Dari guru, sebagian mereka kurang mengaitkan antara penjelasan topik dengan kehidupan nyata siswa dan mereka juga cenderung menggunakan strategi yang sama pada teks yang berbeda. Untuk mengatasi permasalahan tersebut, penulis memperkenalkan strategi discovery learning, yang akan membantu siswa SMA dalam memahami teks report. Strategi discovery learning adalah  strategi yang mengharuskan siswanya untuk menemukan sendiri informasi topik yang dipelajarinya melalui enam tahapan kegiatan, yakni stimulation, problem statement, data collection, data processing, verification, dan generalization. Langkah pengajaran yang dilalui adalah sesuai dengan pendekatan scientific yakni observing, questioning, information collecting, associating, dan communicating. Adapun keuntungan dari strategi ini adalah: 1) memperkaya pengetahuan dasar dan kosakata siswa, 2) memotivasi siswa untuk belajar 3) membuat rasa ingin tahu siswa berkembang, 4) membuat siswa menjadi lebih kreatif, 5) mengajarkan ilmu sekaligus skil kepada siswa , 6) dan meningkatkan kepercayaan diri siswa. Pada akhirnya, penulis berharap agar guru bisa menggunakan strategi ini sebagai salah satu alternatif dalam mengajarkan kemampuan membaca teks report kepada siswa Sekolah Menengah Atas (SMA). Abstract

This paper explains about the implementation of “Using Pictures to Tell Stories” which is one of techniques in teaching speaking to improve the ability students’ in telling stories. This techniques use pictures as media that are provided by the teacher and the students make a story map based on the pictures. The purpose is to make the students easy to produce a narrative text by themselves. In this paper, the writer chooses narrative text that is appropriate with technique using pictures to tell stories. By using this technique in teaching narrative text, the students will have self confidence to produce narrative text orally.

Abstract

This study is about the relationship of students’ metacognitive reading strategies awareness and reading comprehension: the cast of sixth semester students of English Department Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP). Since it is still doubted whether or not there is a significant correlation between the students’ Metacognitive Reading Strategies Awareness and Reading Comprehension, the writer conducted a research to obtain the answers to those questions. Prior to finding out relationship, the study tried to ascertain the level awareness and types strategies that respondents use when they read English academic texts, and their reading performance. Using SORS questionnaire and Test TOEFL with students’ k1-15 English department (UNP), the study found out that the awareness of respondents on using metacognitive reading strategies is on medium level. From three categories of metacognitive reading strategies, the Problem-Solving Strategies (PROB) is the most frequently used by respondents. On the level reading comprehension, the respondents got below average or low level. For correlation, the study used Pearson product correlation moment. The study reveals that there is no correlation between metacognitive reading strategies awareness and reading comprehension.

Abstract

Abstrak   Kemampuan menulis siswa kelas XI SMA Adabiah Padang masih rendah. Salah satu kesulitan yang dihadapi siswa ketika menulis teks adalah  membuat topic kalimat yang benar dan mengembangkan topic kalimat tersebut menjadi kalimat-kalimat yang benar secara tatabahasa. Membuat kalimat yang lengkap dan benar secara tata bahasa merupakan hal yang penting dalam menulis. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti mencoba untuk mengatasi masalah tersebut dengan menggunakan Self-Regulated Strategy Development. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat dampak dari penggunaan Self-Regulated Strategy Development terhadap kemampuan menulis teks hortatory exposition siswa kelas XI SMA Adabiah Padang. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian eksperimental yang dilaksanakan di SMA Adabiah Padang. Self-Regulated Strategy Development ini memiliki enam proses dalam penggunaannya. Keenam proses ini adalah developing background knowledge, discussing, modeling, memorizing, supporting, dan write independently. Melalui pendekatan ini, siswa akan menulis dengan bantuan dirinya sendiri. Siswa akan bertanya kepada dirinya untuk membantu mengembangkan kalimat perkalimat dalam tulisannya. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai rata-rata yang dihasilkan kelas eksperimen lebih tinggi dibandingkan kelas kontrol yaitu 70.23 : 63.63. Dengan menggunakan rumus t-test, diperoleh t-hitung sebesar 3.87 dan t-tabel sebesar 1.68. Hasil tersebut menyatakan bahwa t-hitung > t-tabel pada taraf signifikan 0.05, yang dapat disimpulkan bahwa penerapan Self-Regulated Strategy Development terhadap pengajaran hortatory exposition text memberikan dampak yang  baik terhadap kemampuan menulis siswa dibandingkan dengan metode pembelajaran yang biasa digunakan guru di sekolah. Kata kunci: Self Regulated Strategy Development, Hortatory exposition.

Abstract

Speaking is an important skill that used to communicate directly with other people. In English speaking skill the students have several problems, such as the students less self confidence and the low motivation given by the teacher and from the students themselves. Those problems can cause students' speaking skill still weak. Therefore, this paper explains a strategy for learning English in the form of a game called the Quartet Cards Game. This game can be used to increase students’ interest in English especially speaking skills.
