Abstract

Background: Stunting is a chronic nutritional problem that impacts the physical growth, cognitive development, and health of children in the future. In 2023, Indonesia still had a high rate of stunting at 21.5%, which is higher than the national goal of 14%. In Bengkulu Province, the prevalence of stunting reached 20.2%, while in North Bengkulu Regency it was 8.7%. One of the areas with a high stunting rate is the Kemumu Health Center, where stunting cases were recorded in 120 toddlers (10.56%) in 2024. Factors that affect the incidence of stunting include the history of exclusive breastfeeding and the nutritional status of toddlers.     Objectives: To determine the relationship between exclusive breastfeeding history and nutritional status of toddlers with stunting incidence. Methods: This type of study is a retrospective case-control design. This research was conducted in July 2025. The population of this study is all toddlers whose data were recorded in the register of the Kemu Health Center’s integrated health post (Posyandu). The sample used was 238 toddlers (119 stunted, 119 not stunted) with a simple random sampling technique. The data were analyzed using chi-square.Results: There was a correlation between exclusive breastfeeding history (p=0,000; OR=8,066) and Nutritional Status of Toddlers (p=0,008) with the incidence of stunting. Toddlers who do not get exclusive breastfeeding are eight times more likely to experience stunting. Conclusions: There is a relationship between the history of exclusive breastfeeding and the nutritional status of toddlers with the incidence of stunting in toddlers aged 6-59 months at the Kemu Health Center. It is recommended that to solve the stunting problem, it is essential to provide nutritional information corresponding to the specific needs of toddlers.

Abstract

Pregnancy is a critical phase in a woman’s life cycle and may be accompanied by complications that threaten maternal and fetal health. The Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Handbook, known in Indonesia as Buku KIA, functions as both a documentation tool and an educational medium for pregnant women. However, its utilization remains suboptimal, and many mothers still lack adequate knowledge of pregnancy danger signs. This study aimed to examine the relationship between the use of the MCH Handbook and pregnant women's knowledge of danger signs during pregnancy in the Telaga Dewa Health Center area, Bengkulu City, in 2025. A quantitative analytical survey with a cross-sectional design was conducted among 73 pregnant women selected through total sampling. Data were collected using structured questionnaires and analyzed using univariate and bivariate analysis, with a Chi-square test applied at a 95% confidence level. Results showed that 58.9% of respondents used the MCH Handbook, while 41.1% did not. Additionally, 52.1% of respondents demonstrated poor knowledge of pregnancy danger signs. Bivariate analysis confirmed a significant association between MCH Handbook utilization and maternal knowledge (p = 0.000). In conclusion, the MCH Handbook significantly contributes to improving maternal knowledge regarding pregnancy danger signs. Strengthening mothers’ engagement with the handbook and ensuring continuous support from health workers are recommended to optimize its effectiveness.

Abstract

Stunting remains a global and national health issue. In Seluma Regency, the prevalence of stunting increased from 21.1% (2022) to 24.4% (2023), with Sukaraja District contributing the highest number of cases. One strategy for addressing this issue is empowering health cadres as agents of change in education and early detection of stunting among pregnant women. The general objective of this community service activity was to improve the knowledge of cadres and pregnant women regarding early detection of stunting risk during pregnancy as an effort to reduce stunting cases in Cahaya Negeri and Sidoluhur Villages, Sukaraja District, Seluma Regency. The activities were carried out in these villages from January to October 2025. The implementation methods included preparation, execution, and evaluation stages. The main activities consisted of cadre training using lectures, group discussions, role plays, demonstrations, and early stunting detection simulations. Evaluation was conducted through pre- and post-tests. Empowering cadres to care about stunting among pregnant women significantly increased their knowledge and skills in stunting prevention. The average cadre knowledge score increased from 80.75 (pre-test) to 92.5 (post-test), an increase of 11.75 points. The program also resulted in the establishment of stunting care cadre organizations in both villages, serving as a forum for continuous discussion and education. This empowerment program effectively enhanced cadres’ capacity in early detection of stunting risk during pregnancy and is expected to continue with support from the local government and health centers.

The research instruments were modules and leaflets on exclusive breastfeeding, developed through a needs assessment, while breastfeeding efficacy was measured using the Breastfeeding Self-efficacy Scale-Short Form (BSES-SF). Data were analysed univariate, bivariate with wilcoxon and multivariate with spearman rank test. The results showed that there was an effect of Small group education of cadres with pregnant women class education on breastfeeding effectiveness with p=0.00 mean difference of 19.56. There was an effect of conventional class education on breastfeeding effectiveness in the control group with p=0.46 mean difference of 1.12. Abstract

Background of study: Stunting is a manifestation of growth failure that begins in the womb until the child is two years old. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the prevalence of stunting increased from 144 million cases in 2020 to 149.2 million cases in 2021. In Sido Luhur village, in January 2024, there were 10 undernourished toddlers, and in May this number increased to 11, 6 of whom were still toddlers. Exclusive breastfeeding is one way to prevent stunting, as breast milk contains nutrients that are crucial for a child's growth and development. The perceived crisis of insufficient breast milk experienced by mothers during breastfeeding has become a rumor that prevents all babies from being breastfed until two years old. Comprehensive breastfeeding education is needed from pregnancy for mothers to strengthen their intentions and build confidence and efficacy in breastfeeding for two years. To develop partner villages through cadre empowerment activities to improve perceptions of breast milk sufficiency through Comprehensive Breastfeeding Education in Sidoluhur Village, Sukaraja District, Seluma Regency.
