Abstract

The objective of this study was to find out the impacts of the use of Google Translate (GT) application to the students’ thesis writing. The samples of the research were chosen purposively, taken the fourth semester students of English Education Department, Graduate Program, at Universitas Negeri Makassar. The study was a descriptive qualitative. It utilized an interview guideline as the primary tool for data collection. The data were analyzed by qualitative analysis employing data condensation, data display, and conclusion and drawing verification. The results of the study showed that the impacts of using GT app to the students’ thesis writing are rewarding in terms of confidence, convenience, time efficiency, and motivation. GT app can increase students’ self-confidence in terms of self-writing skills in composing their thesis. It can also increase the ability to create students’ thesis content. Its use is convenient. Its operation is simple to use at any time, from any location, and in any mobile device. GT app also has an impact on the students’ motivation to complete their thesis quickly, resulting in time efficiency that saves them time in understanding the related literature from GT’s translation as well as the translation of the students’ ideas.Keywords: Google Translate, Thesis Writing, Impacts.

Abstract

Aplikasi SIMLP2M Universitas Negeri Makassar merupakan sistem yang mengelola data penting terkait penelitian dan pengabdian kepada masyarakat yang dilakukan oleh dosen dan peneliti. Mengingat sensitivitas data yang dikelola, keamanan server aplikasi ini menjadi prioritas. Belum adanya sistem monitoring keamanan yang efektif membuat server ini rentan terhadap serangan siber. PKM ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan keamanan server SIMLP2M melalui pengembangan sistem monitoring berbasis Wazuh, sebuah perangkat lunak open-source yang mampu mendeteksi dan mencegah ancaman siber secara real-time. PKM ini dilaksanakan dalam beberapa tahapan, yaitu survei dan analisis kebutuhan, desain topologi keamanan, instalasi dan konfigurasi Wazuh, pelatihan admin server, evaluasi sistem, serta pendampingan teknis. Hasil implementasi menunjukkan bahwa Wazuh berhasil mendeteksi ancaman potensial dan meningkatkan kemampuan admin server dalam merespon insiden keamanan. Selain itu, melalui pelatihan dan alih teknologi, admin server kini lebih kompeten dalam memantau dan melindungi server dari serangan siber. Dengan demikian, pengembangan sistem monitoring keamanan berbasis Wazuh ini telah memberikan kontribusi signifikan dalam meningkatkan keamanan aplikasi yang dikelola oleh UNM

Abstract

The research investigates the students ‘interest to Using TELLS strategy in learning reading comprehension the eighth-grade students of SMP 23 Makassar. There was one variable used in this research (students’ interest during learning reading comprehension). The aim of this research to determine whether the eighth-grade students of SMP 23 Makassar are interested in using the TELLS strategy for teaching reading comprehension. The research was descriptive quantitative and used questionnaire as instrument for collecting data. The study population consisted of ninth-grade students from SMP 23 Makassar which the subject of the research was VIII 4 class. The researcher utilized cluster random sampling technique with the total consist of 32 students. The result of this research the students were interested in learning using TELLS Strategy in Narrative Text. It is proved by the mean score of students' Interest is 75.04 which is categorized as Interested according to the range of students’ interest score. There are 6 (19 %) of 32 students "very interested". Majority of students as shown in the data above are 22 (69%) classified into "interested". The rest 4 (13%) students are categorized as "moderate, which means these students do not have serious interest toward the use of TELLS strategy, but they still use it.

Abstract

This research was aimed to measure (1) the comparison of the English speaking treated in Problem Based Learning between the students at eleventh year from social and science classes, to describe (2) the perceptions of the English teachers towards the implementation of teaching English speaking through Problem Based Learning. This method applied was mixed-method with comparative design in which 30 science and 30 social students in year eleventh of SMA Negeri 13 Makassar (XI. IPA 5 and XI. IPS 2) become the samples. The researcher used speaking skill test and interview as the research instruments. The speaking test was done in order to collect the data and it was conducted to identify the science and social scores in English speaking skill, especially in the three aspects of speaking skill: fluency, accuracy, and comprehension. The results showed that the science actually dominated the higher scores in all aspects of speaking, the mean score of science students reach 86.3407 while social students reach 76.9843. (1) The t-test was lower than P (0.000 < 0.05), which means that the (H0) of this research was rejected and (H1) was accepted. (2) English teachers perceptions regarding the effectiveness of Problem Based Learning model had positive perception Therefore, it can be inferred that the science students in year eleventh of SMA Negeri 13 Makassar have better scores in speaking skill than the social students through Problem Based Learning model.

Abstract

The intention of this study is to determine how students experience about using QuillBot as a tool to minimise plagiarism in their thesis proposals. To accomplish the objectives of the study, a quantitative research approach was used. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire distributed to seventh-semester undergraduate students majoring in English Education at STKIP YPUP Makassar during the 2023/2024 academic year. According to the results, 60% of students think QuillBot is helpful for paraphrasing, and 40% concur that it is user-friendly and beneficial. Additionally, all participants (100%) agreed that QuillBot is a useful tool for paraphrasing. After using QuillBot, most students reported improvements in their writing clarity (60%) as well as in their grammar and sentence structure. Furthermore, 40% of students strongly suggested QuillBot to others, and 60% of students said they would be willing to keep using it. These findings imply that QuillBot is an effective supporting tool for encouraging academic integrity and helping students develop their academic writing, even though some students still need more direction to make the most of it.

Abstract

Speaking confidence is a crucial factor in successful English language learning, particularly in EFL settings where anxiety and low self-esteem often hinder oral participation. This qualitative study investigates the teaching strategies employed by English teachers at Cambridge English School, a private language institution in Makassar, Indonesia, to foster students’ confidence in speaking. Utilizing classroom observations and in-depth interviews with three experienced teachers, the study applies Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis to identify six key strategies: reflective questioning, warm-up activities, use of relevant and authentic topics, mixed-ability group work, prioritizing fluency over accuracy, and encouraging feedback. Findings reveal that mixed-ability groupings serve as a vital mechanism for peer scaffolding and emotional support, consistent with socio-constructivist and social cognitive theories. Other strategies contribute to creating a psychologically safe and motivating environment that enhances students’ willingness to communicate. The study underscores the importance of learner-centered practices that integrate cognitive and affective dimensions to build speaking confidence. Implications for EFL teaching and teacher training include deliberate group composition and fluency-focused instruction to foster risk-taking and spontaneous speech. This research bridges theory and practice, offering practical insights for educators aiming to cultivate oral confidence in diverse EFL classrooms.

Abstract

This study examines the process of implementing the audio-lingual method to improve students’ listening skills at SMA Negeri 3 Tana Toraja. tarting from initial observations regarding students' challenges in understanding oral information, especially in a foreign language, this study aims to describe in depth how the audio-lingual method is implemented in the classroom and how its implementation affects students' listening skills. Using a qualitative approach with a case study, this study involved several students and English teachers at SMA Negeri 3 Tana Toraja as participants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observations in the classroom, and document analysis, including lesson plans and audio recordings of learning. The case study approach allows for contextual and in-depth exploration of phenomena, providing a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of teacher-student interactions and students' responses to the methods applied. The results showed that the implementation of the audio-lingual method at SMA Negeri 3 Tana Toraja involved a series of structured activities such as repetition of sentence patterns, dialogues, and Drill exercises. Teachers consistently used audio recordings and emphasized correct pronunciation. However, challenges such as time constraints, large class sizes, and lack of variety of audio materials were also identified. These findings indicate that the audio-lingual method has great potential in improving students' listening skills through intensive and repeated exposure, but its effectiveness is highly dependent on contextual adaptation and teacher creativity in managing learning. This study is expected to provide valuable input for education practitioners in designing more effective language learning strategies, especially in developing students' listening skills.

Abstract

This study explores students’ perceptions of Kahoot! in an English phrase memorization program and identifies the challenges and opportunities they experienced during its implementation. Conducted at Al Mubarak Cendekia Islamic School in Makassar, Indonesia, the research employed an explanatory sequential mixed-methods design. Quantitative data were collected from 21 junior high school students through Likert-scale questionnaires, followed by qualitative interviews with selected students. Findings revealed that students’ perceptions of Kahoot! were overwhelmingly positive, with strong recognition of its role in making memorization enjoyable, interactive, and engaging. Statistical analysis demonstrated significant correlations between positive perceptions and students’ recognition of learning opportunities, while perceptions were not significantly related to reported challenges. Qualitative insights indicated that Kahoot! encouraged collaboration, motivation, and persistence but also presented difficulties, including technical issues, time constraints, and distractions. The study concludes that Kahoot! offers valuable opportunities to enhance phrase memorization in Islamic school contexts, though infrastructural and design-related challenges require careful attention. Implications are offered for teachers, schools, and policymakers in integrating gamified learning technologies.

Abstract

This study explores students’ perceptions of using Lumi Education as a learning tool for English vocabulary acquisition at SMAN 13 Sinjai. Data were collected using a 15-item Likert-scale questionnaire and semi-structured interviews with selected students. Quantitative analysis of the questionnaire provided descriptive insights into students’ attitudes, while qualitative thematic analysis of the interviews identified key themes, including engagement and enjoyment, design and visual appeal, clarity and comprehension, gamification and motivation, immediate feedback, active learning, and technical challenges. Overall, students reported positive perceptions, highlighting that interactive exercises and gamified activities enhanced their vocabulary learning experience, motivation, and participation. Some technical issues were noted, suggesting the need for improved infrastructure and guidance. The findings indicate that Lumi Education is an effective, engaging, and learner-centered tool that supports active and meaningful learning, providing practical insights for educators seeking to integrate digital platforms into language instruction.

Abstract

Kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM) ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan guru-guru Bahasa Inggris tingkat SMA di Kabupaten Maros dalam menulis artikel ilmiah berbasis Artificial Intelligence (AI) secara beretika. Mitra kegiatan ini adalah Musyawarah Guru Mata Pelajaran (MGMP) Bahasa Inggris SMA Kabupaten Maros dengan jumlah peserta sebanyak 19 orang. Permasalahan utama mitra meliputi rendahnya pemahaman struktur artikel ilmiah, keterbatasan pengalaman publikasi, serta minimnya literasi penggunaan AI secara etis dalam penulisan akademik. Kegiatan dilaksanakan pada April 2026 melalui tahapan sosialisasi, pelatihan, praktik, dan pendampingan. Rangkaian kegiatan diawali dengan penerimaan tim pengabdi oleh Bupati Maros di Kantor Bupati Maros sebagai bentuk dukungan pemerintah daerah, kemudian dilanjutkan dengan pelaksanaan pelatihan di SMAN 3 Maros sebagai pusat kegiatan. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman peserta terhadap struktur artikel ilmiah serta kemampuan memanfaatkan AI secara bertanggung jawab dalam proses penulisan. Faktor pendukung utama adalah antusiasme tinggi peserta, sedangkan hambatan utama adalah keterbatasan waktu pelatihan. Program ini berkontribusi terhadap peningkatan kompetensi profesional guru serta penguatan budaya publikasi ilmiah di tingkat sekolah menengah.
