Abstract

This research discussed the language extinction in Tolaki language for Tolakinese who lived in Punggaluku village. Language contact that has occurred at multilingual society in Punggaluku became an interesting phenomenon to be learnt because it had close relationship with the use of ethnic language of the residents in this village. This study focused on the endangered level of Tolaki language extinction and predicted the Tolaki language extinction at Punggaluku Village, Laeya Sub district. The main data of the research were taken in Punggaluku Village, Laeya Sub district, South Konawe Regency. Observation and interview were used by the researcher in collecting the data from informants in this area. The result of this research showed that Tolaki language was potentially threatened as a severely endangered language. It was indicated from the parents were not transmitted Tolaki language to their children and the low frequency in using Tolaki language among old generation. It caused the young generation could not speak Tolaki language and final effect of this phenomenon was language extinction. Futhermore, the researcher predicted 30 years ahead, Tolaki language will be extincted in Punggaluku village, Laeya Sub District, South Konawe Regency.

Abstract

The use of videos in education makes it possible to overcome practical real-world constraints and explore far greater possibilities provided by digital spaces, especially for the video uploaded in online platform such as blog. This study examines whether online video blog as media have a significant effect on students’ achievement of passive voice. It used pre-experimental (one group pre-test and post-test) design. The samples of this study were 10 students at 4J Operation. A pre-test and post-test were conducted by using multiple choice questions as the instruments. Data analysis was through paired-sample t-test. Results showed that there was an increase in mean score of pre-test (49,1) and post-test (63,5). Data from Paired Sample t-test showed that Sig. (2-tailed) was 0.000 which was smaller than .05 which means that there was significance difference in mean score after employing treatment.

Abstract

This research was accomplished to investigate the quality of summative test at the Second Year Students of Islamic Senior High School (MAN) of Insan Cendekia Kota Kendari. The design of this research was descriptive quantitative research with documentation technique to collect data. The data were analyzed using qualitative and quantitative analysis. Qualitative analysis was carried out by looking at the appropriateness of items with competency being tested to determine the content validity of the test. Quantitative analysis was carried out using the SPSS 16.0 program and Microsoft Excel to operate data regarding the level of difficulty, discrimination index, item distracters, and reliability of the test. The result revealed that quality of the test in terms of content validity had met good criteria, with the value 83% of the test items represented the basic competence and indicators as the fulfillment of content validity. The results of item analysis revealed that: 1) the biggest percentage of item difficulty was at moderate category (63%); 2) the biggest percentage of item discrimination was at sufficient category (51%); 3) the biggest percentage of item distracters was at effective category (54%); 4) reliability was categorized as good with reliability coefficient 0,757

Abstract

This research discussed Java language maintenance by Javanese people living at Bangunsari, Muna. It focused on condition in several domains as family, school, neighbourhoods, mosque, and mass media as well as the researcher reviewed in terms of age groups, and causal factors leading to the language maintenance. The data were interview and conversation with the Javanese people at Bangunsari. Design used was qualitative research through ethnography approach. The researcher used observation, recording, and interview as the instruments to get data. The result showed that Javanese people who lived at Bangunsari village more frequently used Java language in their daily life. In the domain of family, Javanese people were monolingual as personally, bilingual with code mixing and code switching as well as in the domain of neighbourhoods. As in the domain of school, they personally were qualified as monolingual speakers with code switching. Religion domain showed that the Javanese people personally were qualified as monolingual speakers with code mixing in bilingual situation as well as in groups of age in 10 up to 50 years old and above still used Java language even though they mixed or switched into bahasa. The causal factors that lead the language maintenance of Java language were number of speakers, loyalty and awareness of Java language, continuity of Java language usage, and the power of Java language and other factors reviewed from sociolinguistic perspectives such as population mobility, culture and tradition, education, and religion.

Abstract

The 2013 curriculum emphasizes a new learning process to improve the quality of the educational system in Indonesia. The 2013 curriculum comes with a new performance, which emphasizes the implementation of a scientific approach in all subjects including English. The purpose of this research is to describe the perception of English teachers on the Scientific Approach implemented on English curriculum 2013 in Kendari. The subjects of this research were 40 English teachers of Junior High School in Kendari. This research used a quantitative method with a survey approach. The data of this research were collected by using questionnaire perception that was adapted from Han Hui (2010). The data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics to find out the mean score of each respondent. The perception of English teachers was analyzed based on the cognitive, psychomotor, and affective aspects. The questionnaire consists of 25 statements that were divided into four indicators; first is about the understanding of learning by using a scientific approach, second is about learning readiness by using a scientific approach, third is about the implementation of scientific approach in the learning process, and the last is the evaluation of a scientific approach in learning. The result of this research shows that English teachers have a positive perception of the Scientific Approach implemented in the 2013 curriculum. It is proven by the result of the mean scores of cognitive aspects are 3.65, the psychomotor aspect gets 3,60 of the mean score and the affective aspect get 3,28 of the mean score. Meanwhile, the overall mean score was 3,55 categorized as a very high level that indicated the English teachers have positive perception or strongly agree with the scientific approach implemented in the 2013 curriculum.

Abstract

Paraphrasing is one of the major skill for academic writing and some have considered that the teaching of paraphrasing can help students avoid copying from source texts. The objective of this research was to find out the problems faced in paraphrasing the text and how to deal with the problems. Quantitative design was used in this study to answer the research questions. There were 10 participants as the subject in this study. The data were collected from paraphrasing text, questionnaire, and interview. The finding of the data analysis shows that lack of vocabulary and lack of grammar knowledge are the problems faced by most of the participants in paraphrasing the text. From the text, it was found that just 17% of students were able to change the word or synonym from the original text and 17 % students were able to change grammar or structure from original text. From the questionnaires, the means score shows that the students have most problems in grammar and lack of vocabulary in paraphrasing the text in which the highest means score fall into the question 17 and 19 with score 3. From the interview, it was also found that most students mentioned lack of vocabulary and grammar as the problems in paraphrasing the text. Furthermore, practicing more, reading more the original text, reading the dictionary and learning more from the internet are the solutions to deal with the problems in paraphrasing the text.

Abstract

The problem of vocabulary learning for the students is their ability in using words is not quite right. Another problem is the students’ acquisition of the meaning of a word still less. That is why the vocabulary mastery is needed for the students to improve their vocabulary ability. While when teacher teach vocabulary there is not enough media that they can use. Because of that reason, the purpose of this research was to know whether the use of Lyricstraining.com improve students’ vocabulary mastery at English Education Department of Halu Oleo University as the media for vocabulary learning.  The subject of this research were 20 students of English education Department of Halu Oleo University who were taking vocabulary class. The method that used on this research was pre experimental with one group pre and post test. The instrument of this research was vocabulary test includes multiple choices and matching words questions. The result of this research showed the improvement of students’ vocabulary mastery after the treatment. This result proved by the incerase of students’ mean score. The mean of students score before the using of Lyricstraining.com  was 73.6. According to the level, it was categorized as good level. After the using of Lyricstraining.com, the mean score of the students was 82.6 and categorized as very good. It means that the mean score of the students on the pre-test and post-test was increased. Furtherrmore based on the finding, H1 was accepted  because  of the  Sig (2 tailed) was 0.000 which was lower than the alpha value α (0.05) or sig (2 tailed) 0.000 < 0.05. In other words the result showed the using of  Lyricstraining.com improve students’ vocabulary mastery at English Education Department of Halu Oleo University.

Abstract

This research was accomplished to investigated the quality of previous English teacher-made test and showed which aspect was reconstruct of the English teacher-made test on the second grade at SMP Negeri 2 Konawe Selatan. The design of this research was qualitative by applaying MER (Model of Educational Reconstruction) approach, which contained (1) Content structure analysis, (2) Empirical study, (3) Reconstruction process. The data analysis used qualitative analysis to see the apperances of  each item test that consisted of 50 items multiple choice. There were criteria of face validity, they were; (1) appropriatness of grammar, (2) the clarity and unambiguity of items, (3) the correct spelling of words, (4) the corret structuring the sentences, (5) the correct punctuation and lowercase/uppercase letters, and  (6) the used of constractions. In other word, the qualitative analysis needed to get to know which aspect has reconstruct.The result of qualitative analysis in face validity level revealed that quality of the test in term of face validity there were 24 items question (48%) categorized  have face validity and  there were 26 items question (52%) categorized mismacth with the criteria of face validity. Thereby, 26 items question did not match with the criteria of face validity. Thus, the items question need to reconstrct to make the improvement of  quality to each items question to match with the criteria of face validity.

Abstract

This study aims at finding out whether there is a significant effect of using Quora application on students’ higher-order thinking skills at eleventh-grade students of SMAN 4 Kendari. This study was a quantitative pre-experimental method with one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample was students at XI IPA 1 class consisting of 36 students. In collecting the data, the researcher used reading test which consisted of 19 items in essay forms. The finding of this study showed that there is a significant effect of using Quora application on students' higher-order thinking skills. It was proven by the increase in students’ mean scores from pretest to posttest. The mean score for the pretest was 58.69 and standard deviation of 9.558 and the post-test was 75.36 and a standard deviation of 8.232. It can be seen that students' higher-order thinking skills were improved after being taught by using Quora application. Furthermore, this study proved that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted with the value of Sig (2 tailed) 0.000 which was lower than the alpha value α (0.05) or sig (2 tailed) 0.000 < 0.05. Based on the findings, it can be concluded that there was a significant effect of using Quora application on students’ higher-order thinking skills at SMAN 4 Kendari.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to find out Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) has significant effect on students’ writing explanatory text at SMAN 2 Raha. This research used pre experiment design One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design of class. The population of this research was all eleventh grade students in SMAN 2 Raha who registered on academic years 2019/2020 which were 488 students, while the subject of this research were students at class XI MIA1 which consisted of 40 students, but only 25 students were participated. The research instrument was written test which focus on explanatory text. The researcher collected data by provided pre-test, gave the treatment by applying Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS), and gave the post-test. The data was analyzed by using SPSS 16.0 version. To examine the hypothesis, the researcher used a paired sample t-test. Based on the result finding, writing explanatory text help students’ on developing their Higher Order Thinking Skill. Writing explanatory text acquired students a great deal of content knowledge before beginning the explanation. Students should be writing detailed and explained sequences of event. In addition, students expect to think critically to showed how and why something happen. Therefore, writing explanatory text has significant effect on students’ higher order thinking skill (HOTS).
