Abstract

Australia's modern Brahman Cross (BX) cattle industry is based on animal welfare. The importation of BX cattle will be bound by the Exporter Supply Chain Assurance System (ESCAS) regulations. This study aimed to evaluate current increased price and fattening cost of feeder BX cattle along with ESCAS additional cost on the price of slaughtered cattle and their welfare. Based on the animal welfare assessment, while in the feedlot for 120 days were considered good, with the average value in the first month 86.4%, the second 88.5%, the third 92.14%, and the fourth 94.29%. Based on the calculations Activity Based Costing (ABC) method, it is known that procurement costs, including the purchase of feeders, contributed to 94% of the total costs, while other costs were handling costs 2.7%, cost of ESCAS 1.56%, selling cost 1.52%, and the lowest, maintenance cost 0.24%. Therefore, to fatten Australian BX cattle, special strategies are needed, such as: optimizing stock in the feedlot; efficiency cost in feed ingredients without reducing quality; applying animal welfare rules to minimize handling costs, and selecting vendors who want the lower price in providing ESCAS support facilities and establishing regular maintenance of the ESCAS supporting tools.

Abstract

The estrous cycle is the period between two consecutive estrus phases regulated by reproductive hormones. A method used for determining the estrous cycle in cattle involves investigating the epithelial cells and leukocytes found in the vaginal mucosa by using vaginal smear techniques. This study aims to identify the epithelial cells and leukocytes that dominate each phase of the estrous cycle in Pasundan heifers, along with the duration of each phase. The study was conducted at the Teaching Farm Ciparanje and the Animal Reproduction Laboratory, Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Universitas Padjadjaran. The study included a sample of 17 Pasundan heifers as experimental animals. The research method applied is descriptive quantitative. The assessed parameters included the number of vaginal epithelial cells (parabasal, intermediate, and superficial), the percentage of leukocytes, and the duration of each phase of the estrous cycle. Observations were carried out for three months. The findings revealed that intermediate cells dominated the epithelial cells during the proestrus phase, superficial cells during the estrus phase, and parabasal cells during the metestrus and diestrus phases. While, the lowest leukocyte count was discovered during the estrus phase, and the greatest during the diestrus phase. Furthermore, the proestrus phase in Pasundan heifers lasted for a period of 2-4 days, the estrus phase lasted for 1-2 days, the metestrus phase lasted for 3-5 days, and the diestrus phase lasted for 11-13 days. The estrous cycle of Pasundan heifers typically lasts between 17 and 25 days.

Abstract

Status kesehatan ternak dalam suatu lingkungan merupakan hal penting yang mendukung keberlangsungan budidayanya yang dapat dilihat melalui parameter profil hematologis. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui profil hematologis sapi pasundan betina dipelihara di Kandang Teaching Farm Ciparanje. Penentuan sampel dilakukan meggunakan teknik purposive sampling. Objek penelitian adalah sapi pasundan betina terdiri dari rentang umur 1,5 – 2 tahun sebanyak 9 ekor dan umur >2 tahun sebanyak 9 ekor. Parameter yang diukur adalah jumlah leukosit, jumlah eritrosit, kadar hemoglobin, nilai hematokrit, dan indeks eritrosit. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan sapi pasundan kelompok umur 1,5-2 tahun memiliki jumlah leukosit, jumlah eritrosit relatif lebih tinggi dan kadar hemoglobin, nilai hematokrit, dan indeks eritrosit relatif lebih rendah dibandingkan kelompok umur >2 tahun. Kisaran profil hematologis penelitian ini dapat berguna sebagai nilai referensi untuk pemeliharaan sapi pasundan dalam mengevaluasi kondisi klinis yang berbeda.

Abstract

ABSTRACT. Turmeric extract (Curcuma longa L.) has the potential to be a natural anthelmintic and alternative to commercial deworming drugs for naturally-infected local sheep. A completely randomized design was used to compare the effect of 5 different oral treatments of turmeric extract tablets at 0 (TET-0), 200 mg (TET-200), 400 mg (TET-400), 800 mg (TET-800), and commercial Oxfendazole 225mg (Oxfen-225) on reducing endoparasites (fecal egg counts, FEC) of naturally-infected local yearling ewes at day-0 (before treatments), day-7, day-14, and day-21 (after treatments) using 4 replicates (n = 4). At day-0, all experimental ewes were naturally infected by FEC Strongyles nematode ranging from 85.0 32.8 to 638 230 eggs/g. Meanwhile, FEC Fasciola spp. and Paramphistomum spp. (Trematode), Monieza spp. (Cestode), dan Eimeria spp. (coccidia) were found a little in a small number of ewes. Therefore, further analysis focused on FEC Strongyles. On day-7, only Oxfen-225 and TET-800 treatments reduced (P0.05) FEC Strongyles by 100% and 64%, respectively. There was no difference (P0.05) in the increased or reduced percentages of FEC Strongyles infections among group treatments during day-14 and day-21 although only Oxfen-225 treatment showed a constant decrease. It seems that orally administering turmeric extract tablet at 800 mg have the potential to reduce FEC Strongyles in sheep by 64% although its anthelmintic potential is still weaker than commercial oxfendazole 225 mg. (Pengaruh Ekstrak Kunyit (Curcuma longa L.) sebagai Antelmintik terhadap Penurunan Endoparasit pada Domba yang Terinfeksi secara Alami) ABSTRAK. Ekstrak kunyit (Curcuma longa L.) mempunyai potensi sebagai antelmintik alami pengganti obat cacing komersial pada domba lokal yang terinfeksi cacing. Rancangan acak lengkap digunakan untuk membandingkan pengaruh 5 perbedaan perlakuan ekstrak kunyit dalam bentuk tablet dengan dosis: 0 (TET-0), 200 mg (TET-200), 400 mg (TET-400), 800 mg (TET-800), dan Oxfendazole komersil 225mg (Oxfen-225) terhadap penurunan jumlah telur cacing pada feses (Fecal egg counts, FEC) domba betina muda yang terinfeksi cacing secara alami pada hari ke-0 (sebelum perlakuan), hari ke-7, hari ke-14, dan hari ke-21 setelah perlakuan menggunakan 4 ulangan (n = 4). Pada hari ke-0, semua domba eksperimen terinfeksi secara alami oleh nematoda Strongyles sebanyak 85.0 32.8 sampai 638 230 telur/gram feses. Sedangkan FEC Fasciola spp. dan Paramphistomum spp. (Trematoda), Monieza spp. (Cestoda), dan Eimeria spp. (Koksidia) hanya ada di beberapa domba saja dalam jumlah yang sedikit. Sehingga Analisa selanjutnya difokuskan kepada FEC Strongyles. Pada hari ke-7, hanya perlakuan Oxfen-225 dan Cur-800 yang dapat mengurangi (P0.05) persentase FEC Strongyles sebanyak 100% dan 64%, secara berurutan. Tidak ada perbedaan (P0.05) pada peningkatan atau penurunan persentase FEC Strongyles pada semua perlakuan selama hari ke-14 dan hari ke-21 walaupun perlakuan Oxfen-225 memperlihatkan pengurangan persentase FEC Strongyles secara konstan. Ekstrak kunyit dalam bentuk tablet pada dosis 800 mg mempunyai potensi menurunkan infeksi FEC Strongyles sekitar 64% pada minggu pertama, tetapi kemampuan antiparasitiknya masih di bawah oxfendazole 225 mg.

Abstract

ABSTRAK. Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengukur seberapa besar pengaruh minyak ikan yang sudah terenkapsulasi terhadap kolesterol darah dan performa pada Domba. Penelitian telah dilakukan di Sub Unit Pelayanan Pengembangan Pembibitan Ternak Domba dan Kambing (SUPPPTDK) Bunihayu, Subang pada tanggal 20 Januari 2020 sampai 27 Maret 2020. Sebanyak 18 ekor domba Ekor Tipis jantan dengan bobot 15,990,98 kg dialokasikan ke dalam 3 perlakuan secara acak. Domba tersebut diberi ransum perlakuan yang disuplementasi dengan mikroenkapsulasi minyak ikan sebanyak 0% (P0), 2,5% (P1), dan 5% (P2). Data yang terkumpul dilakukan analisis ragam dan bila hasil berbeda nyata maka dilanjutkan dengan uji Duncan. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa mikroenkapsulasi minyak ikan dapat menurunkan kolesterol darah (P0,05), namun tidak berpengaruh nyata terhadap pertambahan bobot badan, konsumsi dan konversi ransum (P0,05). Penurunan kadar kolesterol terjadi pada kelompok domba dengan perlakuan mikroenkapsulasi sebanyak 2,5% (P1) dan mikroenkapsulasi 5% (P2). Kadar kolesterol darah masing-masing perlakuan berturut-turut adalah 100,70 mg/dl (P0); 96,20 mg/dl (P1); dan 78,76 mg/dl (P2). Rataan yang terbaik pada pertambahan bobot badan, konsumsi bahan kering harian, dan konversi ransum terdapat pada P2 yaitu 63,96 g/hari, 574,13 g/hari, dan 9,08. Hasil penelitian dapat disimpulkan bahwa mikroenkapsulasi minyak ikan dapat menurunkan kolesterol darah, dengan penurunan tertinggi pada pemberian 5%. (The impact of microencapsulation fish oil in feed on blood cholesterols and performance on sheep) ABSTRAK. This study measured the effect of encapsulated fish oil on blood cholesterol and sheep performance. The study was conducted at the Bunihayu Sheep and Goat Breeding Services Bunihayu, Subang on January 20, 2020 to March 27, 2020. A total of 18 male thin-tailed sheep 15.990.98 kg were allocated randomly into 3 treatments. The sheep were given feed supplemented with fish oil microencapsulation of 0% (P0), 2.5% (P1), and 5% (P2). The data were collected and analyzed by analysis of variance and, if the result is significantly different, continued by Duncan's test. The results showed that fish oil microencapsulation decreased blood cholesterol levels (P0.05). However, it did not affect body weight gain, consumption, and feed conversion (P0.05). Decreased levels of cholesterol occurred in the group of sheep with 2.5% microencapsulation (P1) and 5% microencapsulation (P2). Blood cholesterol levels of each treatment were 100.70 mg/dl (P0); 96.20 mg/dl (P1); and 78.76 mg/dl (P2), respectively. Averagely, the highest body weight gain, dry matter intake and feed conversion were found in P2 as much as 63.96 g/day, 574.13 g/day, and 9.08, respectively. The results can be concluded that microencapsulation of fish oil can reduce blood cholesterol, with the highest decrease at the level of 5%.

Abstract

ABSTRAK. Potensi tongkol jagung sebagai pakan ruminansia sangat besar, namun dibatasi penggunaannya karena kadar ligninnya yang tinggi. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menguji dan mengetahui hubungan antara kandungan lignin dan serat kasar tongkol jagung yang direndam dengan berbagai konsentrasi filtrat abu jerami padi (FAJP). Penelitian menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap (RAL) dengan empat macam perendaman, yaitu R1 = Tongkol jagung dengan hidrolisis FAJP konsentrasi 5%, R2 = Tongkol jagung dengan hidrolisis FAJP konsentrasi 10%, R3 = Tongkol jagung dengan hidrolisis FAJP konsentrasi 15%, R4 = Tongkol jagung dengan hidrolisis FAJP konsentrasi 20%. Setiap perlakuan diulang sebanyak empat kali. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa FAJP berpengaruh nyata terhadap penurunan kadar lignin dan serat kasar pada tongkol jagung (p0,05). Hubungan antara perlakuan dengan kadar lignin membentuk persamaan regresi Y = 9,29 -0,172X dengan R2 =0,92, sedangan antara serat kasar dan lignin memiliki hubungan yang sangat erat dengan nilai r =0,85. Perendaman tongkol jagung dengan FAJP 20% menghasilkan persentase lignin dan serat kasar yang paling rendah yaitu 5,88dan 32,03 %.Kesimpulan, penggunaan FSJP dengan konsentrasi 20% merupakan perlakuan yang terbaik.(The effect of soaked by rice straw ash filtrate on lignin and crude fiber content of corn cob)ABSTRACT. Utilization of corncobs as a ruminant feed is highly potential but its high lignin content may limit its use. The objective of this experiment was to investigate the effect of soaking in the water containing different concentration of rice straws ash filtrate (RSAF) on lignin and crude fiber contents of corncob. A completely randomized design was employed to compare 5 different treatments: R1 = corncob with RSAF hydrolysis 5%, R2 = corncob with RSAF hydrolysis 10%, R3 = corncob with RSAF hydrolysis 15%, and R4 = corncob with RSAF hydrolysis 20%. Each treatment was repeatedfour times (n=4). The result showed that RSAF had a significant effect (P0.05) in reducing lignin and crude fiber contents. The relationship between treatment and lignin content followed a regression equation: Y = 9.29 -0.172X with R2 =0.92, while crude fiber and lignin had a close relationship with r =0.85. Soaking corncobs with RSAF as much as 20% resulted the lowest lignin and crude fiber contents which were 5.88 and 32.03% respectively. It concluded that utilization of RSAF 20% was the best treatment.

Abstract

In recent years, the exploration of natural supplements such as green tea extract and their potential benefits in livestock nutrition has gained considerable attention among researchers and agriculturalists. Green tea extract contains a high concentration of bioactive substances, such as polyphenols and catechins. This study aimed to explore the effects of varying doses of green tea extract on rumen fermentation parameters through an in vitro trial using sheep rumen liquids. A completely randomized experimental design was utilized to test the effect of 4 different doses of green tea extract treatments (0, 140, 280, and 560 mg/kg) on in vitro Hohenheim gas test method. The current study shows no significant effect of administering green tea extract at various doses on total gas production, total gas production per in vitro dry matter and organic matter degradability, volatile fatty acid per in vitro dry matter and organic matter degradability, methane production per inv vitro dry matter and organic matter degradability of green tea extract. Although no significant effects were observed on the investigated parameters, this study provides important insights in the understanding of the potential use of green tea extract in modulating fermentation processes in the ruminant’s stomach. In conclusion, the findings of this study underscore the impact of GTE on gas production regulation, highlighting its potential implications for gastrointestinal health

Abstract

Rice straw (RS) is widely available in South East Asia and it can be used as a source of fibres for ruminant animals. However, RS has poor palatability and nutritional values. Thus, the use of concentrate (CON) as a dietary supplement is required to increase the utilisation of RS. Green (GT) and black (BT) teas can act as natural dietary additives in a CON. This study evaluated nutrient compositions of the diet ingredients and the impact of supplementing GT and BT in a rice straw-based sheep diet on in vitro dry matter degradability (IVDMD), total gas production (TGP) and  pH during more than 24 hours of incubations. The CON, GT, and BT had higher crude protein, organic matter, and metabolizable energy but lower fibre fractions than RS. The GT and BT had greater total tannins than CON and RS confirming that they could potentially be used as natural dietary additives. In addition, GT supplementation improved IVDMD without affecting TGP and pH values. Conversely, BT supplementation did not improved IVDMD. Thus, BT is less preferable as a ruminant dietary supplement than GT.

Abstract

Roselle calyx powder (RCP) can act as natural dietary additives in a concentrate. A completely randomized design was employed in this study to determine the impact of 6 different doses of RCP supplementation (0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.6%) in a rice straw-based diet using 6 replicates (n = 6) on in vitro dry matter degradability (IVDMD), in vitro organic matter degradability (IVOMD), pH, total gas production 8 hours (TGP8), total gas production 16 hours (TGP16), total gas production 24 hours (TGP24) and methane. RCP supplementation did not affect the degradability, pH, and methane. The lower dose of RCP-0.1 supplementation obtained greater TGP than the higher doses, increased TGP can be a sign of increasing rumen fermentation process. However, higher doses RCP are not recommended, as the bioactive compounds may act as antinutrients, inhibiting the fermentation process.

Abstract

Brahman Indonesia cattle are a superior beef breed developed in Indonesia to increase national productivity, but their performance is influenced by various non-genetic factors. This study aimed to analyze the effect of these factors, specifically calf sex and dam parity, on the body weight performance of Brahman Indonesia cattle at BPTU-HPT Sembawa. Data from 2014-2023, consisting of 5,213 records (2,115 birth weight, 1,672 weaning weight, and 1,426 yearling weight) from the progeny of 31 sires and 178 dams, were analyzed using the General Linear Model (GLM) and Duncan's Multiple Range Test. The results showed that both calf sex and dam parity had a very significant effect (P<0.0001) on all observed growth traits. Male calves were consistently heavier than female calves at all age stages, while dam parity exhibited a performance pattern that was lowest at the first parity and reached its peak at parities 3-6. These findings confirm the importance of correcting for non-genetic factors in selection programs to improve the accuracy of genetic evaluation for Brahman Indonesia cattle breeding stock.
