Abstract

Penelitian ini untuk mengetahui peningkatan kemampuan penguasaan kosakata bahasa Inggris siswa dengan menggunakan sebuah teknik pembelajaran yakni Word Square Modelling. Penelitian dilakukan dengan metode penelitian tindakan kelas dengan memilih siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 5 sebagai subject penelitian. Dua siklus dilakukan dalam penelitian ini dengan mengikuti 4 (empat) proses dalam setiap siklusnya, yakni planning, observing, acting, and reflecting. Tes vocabulary digunakan untuk mengetahui kemampuan penguasaan vocabulary siswa yang dilakukan analiss dengan mencari tahu nilai rata-rata dan persentase nilai yang diperoleh oleh siswa. Hal lain yang dilakukan adalah melakukan observasi dan wawancara untuk menyempurnakan pemerolehan data penelitian. Dari analisis data yang dilakukan diketahui bahwa pesentase nilai penguasaan vocabulary siswa dari siklus satu ke siklus beirkutnya meningkat, yakni dari 76,19% menjadi 78.66. walaupun peningkatan yang terjadi tidak begitu tinggi, namun dapat disimpulkan bahwa penggunakan wodd square modeling untuk mengajari vocabulary mastery sungguh baik digunakan

Abstract

This research is done at Institute Islamic Studies (IAIN) Padangsidimpuan to know about lectures’ learning teaching journal,  about English Department (TBI) syllabus, and about compatibility between lectures’ learning teaching journal and English Department (TBI) syllabus for scientific and skill subjects. It has been done through qualitative approach by descriptive method. The primary source of research is lectures’ learning teaching journal for scientific and skill subjects and the secondary source of research is the syllabus. Document and interview are used as the instrument of research.  The result showed that there is one of lecture’s learning teaching journal that is not suitable with English Department (TBI) syllabus for scientific and skill subjects. It’s caused the lecture didn’t teach subject in which meant by Syllabus. It means that most of the lecturers have taught based on the learning and teaching syllabus given.

Abstract

The aim of this research was to find code mixing on students’ facebook that posted on facebook status and comments of the sixth semester TBI IAIN Padangsidimpuan. The facebook users often mixed their language with another language in status and comments on facebook. The objectives of this research were to find out of the use of code mixing, types of code mixing and students reasons in using code mixing on facebook status and comments in English Education Program at TBI-1 Sixth Semester. To answer the objectives of the research, the researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The results of the data analysis showed three types of code mixing suggested by Muysken such as insertion, alternation and congruent lexicalization, appeared in Facebook. There were amounts of code mixing that had been done by facebook user or sixth semester students TBI-1 were 71 for insertion, 9 times for alternation and 3 for congruent lexicalization. So, the total of code mixing that had been done by them was 83 times. Insertion code mixing was more often use than alternation and congruent lexicalization code mixing in facebook users status and comments posted. It could be seen from this percentages, they used 3.61 % insertion, while alternation 85.54% and 10.85% congruent lexicalization. So, the facebook users were dominantly used insertion than alternation and congruent lexicalization. Moreover, the reasons of doing the codes were so varieties, such as would improve their language, mixing some language was unique, could not say and forgot the word, live in bilingual environment, to make emphasize, funny, joke, and applying new words on facebook status and comments. Keywords: Code Mixing, Facebook, Status, Comments

Abstract

Assessment is the evaluation for the students’ ability in one material or one subject of learning in order to know how far the students understand the material are, and it needs an authentic one to get the best result of the students’ learning. Many assessment have been done in assessing students’ reading comprehension, meanwhile not all assessment is appropriate to the students’ need. Moreover, in assessing students’ reading comprehension, an authentic assessment can be in the real world or the real context for their living and their environment. An Authentic Task is an assignment given to students designed to assess their ability to apply standard-driven knowledge and skills to real-world challenges. One way to assess students’ reading comprehension can be done by using Critical Reading Strategies. It is known that the strategy help the students in comprehending the contents of the text well. By applying the strategies, the students will be more comprehend about the text. It is realized that it is difficult for the students to use it, meanwhile it is proved that it makes the students understand the text well. Thus, it can be concluded that the students’ reading comprehension can be evaluated by using Critical Reading Strategies, and it is proved that it has good result.

Abstract

In this era of globalization in the form of communication between language translation still exist, and even tended increasingly important. Therefore, the technology provides it easily, including in translating. Due to technological developments, today there are various tools that can help to translate, for example google translate. Google translate does not need to be installed on your computer or laptop but the translator only need to connect to the Internet network. Thus translating into something which is foreign in the eyes of people who learn the language, because sometimes a lot of texts that are still using the original language from the international language, such as English that needs to be understood. From here, the students came the idea to understand the text by translating it by using the instant ways, that use relatively short time. One of them by using google translate. It shows the technology has been used to participate in the development process of translation in the students’ learning, it is for mathematic students in Universitas Negeri Padang. Google translate support over 100 languages at various levels. For some languages, google translate can pronounce translated text, highlight corresponding words and phrases in the source and target text, and act as a simple dictionary for single word input. If detect language is selected, text in an unknown language can be automatically identified. In this study, the researcher used survey research. The aim of the study is to investigate the information about the effectiveness of using google translate on students’ translation at mathematic faculty of Universitas Negeri Padang. To collect the data, the questionnaire of the effectiveness of google translate on students’ translation was distributed to the participant that consist of 40 students of mathematic faculty of Universitas Negeri Padang. The data gathered through the questionnaire was analyzed to investigate the effectiveness of google translate on students’ translation at mathematic faculty of Universitas Negeri Padang. Based on the result of the research, it can be concluded that google translation is effective to be used by the students in translating their books, articles, or tasks in order to understand their learning materials of the mathematic students. The students think that the google translation give a lot of benefits to help them to translate their task.

Abstract

This study deals with the ability of the students to understand English texts and types of their reading strategies. It is believed that reading strategies help students improve their reading comperehension.  Based on this theory, then, the qualitative research was carried out to describe students’ reading ability and types of strategy they used. Data were collected through questionnaires that have been distributed to 34 students.  They were also observed and tested.  It was found that the students’ ability in understanding text was still low. They had many problems in understanding English texts because they did not apply appropriate reading strategies in their reading activities. Abstract

The main focus of the research is to find out the effect of Estafet Writing Technique on writing Recount Text at Grade XI Pesantren An-Nur Padangsidimpuan in Covid-19 era. This research was designed with quantitative research with experimental method. The sample were XI 1 as experimental class that consisted of 11 students and XI 2  as control class that consisted of 10 students. The data were collected through pre-test and post-test in essay test form and analyzed by using t-test formula. The finding showed that the mean score of experimental class was higher than the mean score of control class. After doing T-test, the researcher found that tcount ttable (6.49 2.093). Therefore, alternative hypothesis (Ha) of this research was accepted null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It can be concluded that there was significant effect of using Estafet Writing Technique on writing Recount Text at grade XI students of MA An-Nur Padangsidimpuan in Covid-19 Era

Abstract

This research was based on misconception or misunderstanding on the concept of gender and the less acceptance on the female’s leadership in State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Padangsidimpuan. The aims of this research are to describe the perception of civitas academic on gender equality and on women’s leadership in IAIN Padangsidimpuan. The method has been used in this research was qualitiative research by using observation, questionnairesm and interviews. The informants of this research was 48 students and 40 persons from lecturers and others. Data were analyzed through grouping, verifying, interpreting, and taking conclusion. The result of this studying shown that all civitas acedemics IAIN Padangsidimpuan was known enough about the gender equality and also felt welcome to the female leader. From 100% of informants of this research, 75,34% civitas academics knew about or familiar with the equality of gender and also 78,60% welcome to the female leadership. Thus, it can be stated that the concepts of gender equality was understood enough and being applied in IAIN Padangsidimpuan, it was proved by appreciating and accepting the leadership from women in IAIN Padangsidimpuan

Abstract

This research describes about the effect of Story Mapping Technique to comprehend narrative text at grade VIII students of SMP N 5 Padangsidimpuan. There were some problems in this research: 1) The students get difficulties in comprehending the text, 2) The students cannot combine the information that they have already read with their background knowledge, 3) The teacher uses inappropriate technique in teaching reading comprehension. The kind of this research was experimental research. The population of this research was all of the eight grade of SMP N 5 Padangsidimpuan.  The total of population were 265 students. Then, the sample of the research was 2 classes, VIII 5 as experimental class that consist of 28 students and VIII 6 as control class that consist of 28 students. The data was derived from pre-test and post-test. To analyze the data, the researcher used t-test formula. Based on the calculation of t-test, the researcher found that tcount = 8.03 and ttable = 1.67356. It means tcount ttable (8.03 1.67356). So, the researcher could concludes that Ha was accepted and Ho was rejected. There was the significant effect of using Story Mapping Technique to comprehend narrative text at grade VIII students of SMP Negeri 5 Padangsidimpuan.

Abstract

Artikel ini mengeksplorasi strategi-strategi membaca yang digunakan oleh mahasiswa sebagai pembaca yang sukses dan mencari tahu srategi membaca yang dominan digunakan oleh mahasiswa. Untuk mengumpulkan data, penelitian ini dilakukan dengan metode deskriptif kualitatif pada jenis studi kasus. Informan penelitian adalah 9 mahasiswa Program Studi Bahasa Inggris yang telah melewati dua mata kuliah Reading Comprehension. Untuk mengumpulkan data dalam penelitian ini, pada peneliti melakukan dua jenis test yakni tes pilihan berganda dan essay untuk mengetahui Reading Comprehension mahasiswa dan pedoman wawancara untuk mengetahui strategi membaca yang digunakan. Dalam Analisa data, para peneliti melakukan reduksi data, display data, dan kesimpulan / verifikasi data.  Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa cukup banyak strategi membaca yang digunakan oleh succesfull readers  di IAIN Padangsidimpuan, yakni looking the kind of the text and reading the passage, reading first paragraph, focusing on first and last paragraph, focusing on the first paragraph and reading the passage, and others. Strategy yang paling sering digunakan adalah focusing on the first sentence, and focusing on the last paragraph. Dari hasil penelitian ini, para peneliti menyarankan agar para pembaca lebih menggunakan strategu yang bervariasi dalam membaca agar supaya semakin meningkatkan kemampuan membaca mahasiswa ataupun pembaca.
