Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia is a nation endowed with competent and skilled human resources. As a developing country, Indonesia faces many challenges that must be addressed. One of the greatest challenges comes from the Indonesian education sector, which must continuously adapt to technological advancements, particularly in the field of education. Educational technology in Indonesia plays a vital role in advancing 21st-century learning. Twenty-first-century learning refers to teaching and learning processes between educators and students that integrate information and communication technology. This approach also requires educators to be prepared to shift learning models and instructional strategies from those that are teacher-centered to approaches that are student-centered. To achieve 21st-century learning in basic education, educators must serve as the main driving force in education and play a crucial role in integrating technology into the learning process. Through the integration of technology in every learning activity, along with support from parents, school principals, and the government, it is expected that a young generation will be produced that is intelligent, has strong character, and is ready to face the Era 5.0.

Abstract

This study aims to examine in depth and analyze the importance of implementing 4C skills in elementary school learning, as well as to describe teachers’ strategies in fostering and developing these skills among students. This is related to the advancement of science and technology in the 21st century, which demands that the education sector produce human resources with critical thinking, creative, communicative, and collaborative abilities. These four competencies are known as the 4C skills (Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication, and Collaboration). This study employs a literature review (library research) method by collecting several articles from Scopus, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and other academic journal websites using specific keywords such as 4C Skills, 21st-Century Learning, Elementary School, Critical Thinking, Creativity, Communication, and Collaboration. The results of the review indicate that the implementation of 4C skills in elementary schools can enhance higher-order thinking skills, foster learner autonomy, and strengthen students’ character to prepare them for global challenges. Teachers play a crucial role as facilitators in creating active, innovative, and collaborative learning environments through the application of various instructional models, such as Project-Based Learning (PjBL), Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL), and Team Games Tournament (TGT).

Abstract

The students of Gen-Z have a preference to study with their gadgets then with their teachers; it raises some challenges for the teacher. Language teaching media is very helpful to give the solutions. This study explores the teachers’ preferences to use media in teaching the Gen-Z students at SMPN 1 Langga Payung, North Sumatera, Indonesia, in English language teaching. It is explored with a descriptive qualitative method; data were accumulated from English teachers and students through observations and interviews, and analyzed qualitatively with data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Two primary factors were found in this study: 1) the media used and 2) the challenges. The results show that teachers used audio media (songs, YouTube), visual media (textbooks, PowerPoint), and audio-visual media (videos, Word wall) to make it suitable to the Gen Z learning styles; and the students showed interest and highly motivated. However, the challenges came, such as poor internet access, limited digital skills, and students’ distractions. The study concludes that teachers should use appropriate media to support effective and interactive English teaching and learning for Gen Z students. The media used in English language teaching can be more variative and selective; and it needs further study to explore more, especially the digital media or tools that can be used appropriately to the students in rural areas of study.
