Abstract

This paper aims to show that for the safety of the occupants in today's architecture, we could learn from the spatial arrangement of the past architecture. In this paper, the adoption of the historiography method from historians was used to trace the genealogy of past architecture. Historiography is a method that is used to trace history back to the past to understand the past. By using historiography, the genealogy (line of a descendant) of vernacular Javanese building will be traced to find the transitional space in the spatial arrangement of the complex of housing. And then, the genealogy of vernacular Japanese buildings will be traced too, to find the transitional space in their spatial arrangement housing. To represent the European building, the genealogy of the Greek building will be used. Again, transitional space will be traced in their building. After that, the finding from these tracing will be compared to find the similarity and differences of the transition spaces. The result of this study showed that people from countries of samples did not design their building with open access to the spatial arrangement. There is always a transitional space from outside of the building to inside of the building. Because open access will make the occupants of the building prone to safety. Not only from tangible (physical) threats but also the intangible threats.

Abstract

Uncontrolled tourism development makes an area develops unevenly and causes changes of function that can harm the surrounding community. Thus, integration in an area is needed to form urban area plans. The development of tourist areas cannot be separated from the change of function that leads to the changes in areas that develop unevenly. For example, a change of lifestyle makes people initially gathered in open spaces move to areas with certain interests. So, the integration between spaces is an important concern in the scope of region development. These corridors can become open spaces that improve the quality of tourist areas. This research aims at identifying the potential development of the religious tourism area of Gus Dur Cemetery in Jombang City with a regionalism approach. It includes activities, facilities, and several symbols that increase the value of the place. The research method employed logical argumentation on which the research relies on argument as a reference in aspects and results of research. The data collection techniques are interviews, observations, cognitive mapping, and literature studies. This study shows some activities that need to be developed; providing an open space to support the community activities, providing facilities that make the value of a tourist area can increase economically, developing new symbols, developing religious tourism areas, and arranging landscapes.

Abstract

Semiotics as a science that studies signs have a wide range of knowledge and one of them is in the field of Architecture which is a result of the cultural process of society because architectural works are the embodiment of the life of that society. Semiotics as the science of signs is capable of being a tool in tracing cultural relations in architectural objects or works. Pura Mandharagiri Semeru Agung as an architectural work that carries Balinese Hindu culture is an architectural work located at the foot of Mount Semeru, to be precise in an area called Senduro in Lumajang district. An architectural object in the form of a gate with the name Wringinlawang stands proudly at the entrance to the area. Wringinlawang in shape and color has a style that is different from the style in the temple area. Therefore, there is a need for a study related to the existence of the wringinlawang object in the middle of the temple area which carries Balinese Hindu culture. To trace the process of wringinlawang's existence and its meaning to the surrounding community, semiotics will be the main tool in tracing the sign, which in this case is the Gapura Wringinlawang. The purpose of this research is to explore the factors influencing the meaning of the Gapura Wringinlawang and to explore the relationship between the signs that are formed. The method used in this research is qualitative research using interview data alongside a literature review. The results of Charles S. Pierce's semiotic study show that the Gapura Wringinlawang contains a symbol of cultural identity for the Senduro community around the temple building. The culture in question is Javanese culture which is manifested through the building style used in the Gapura Wringinlawang building because of the context of the location.
