Abstract

Nowadays, the integrations between Western principles of visual art with principles of Feng Shui in logo designs can easily be found in Indonesia. Principles of Feng Shui, often called as Feng Sui or Hong Sui, is an ancient Chinese way of thinking that emphasize in environment organization. Principles of Feng Shui's four key points are to produce a positive Qi energy, to maintain stability among Yin and Yang, to produce a productive cycle Wu Xing (Five Elements), and to represent the symbolism from Chinese culture. The purpose of this research is to establish an understanding on the relationship between Western principles of visual art and principles of Feng Shui in logo designs, like the similarities on the way of reading logo as well as the differences. Logo designs were analyzed, described, and explained using Western principles of visual art and principles of Feng Shui's four key points into three sections, which are visual elements, logo composition, and logo interpretation. This research used the qualitative method with descriptive analysis. The data were collected through several methods, such as interviews and literature reviews. The four stages of analysis procedure are description, formal analysis, interpretation, and evaluation or judgement. Upon completion, there are three findings. First, the way of reading a logo design using the Western principles of visual art is simpler and straightforward than the principles of Feng Shui. Second, several relationships among the two principles were found in visual elements, logo composition, and logo interpretation. Third, the integrations between Western principles of visual art with principles of Feng Shui in a logo design represents its ideologies as well as the 'shield' to protect the company from any harm.

Abstract

Illumination is visual decoration in form of coloured fonts, designed or illustrated page in print media. In middle age bibles or manuscripts, there are forms and type of illuminations that may applied as a system of content delivery in books. A framework of illumination design methodology may elaborated through content analysis on several illuminations in bibles and religious manuscripts. This research will enrich visual communication design study, especially typography and illustration study in developing an information system delivery based on visual elements.

Abstract

Internet becomes part of worldwide daily urban activities. Communication among people is intensified through various interfaces and media because of information technology convergence and the application of visual icons which represents emotion.The icons that represent emotions, expressions and feelings are titled emoticons. Emoticons are highly used in IT based communication gadgets such as portable PCs or cellulars. This paper develops and depicts the creation process, perception and cultural aspetcs that influenced the development of emoticon through visual communication design study theoretical and historical review.

Abstract

After the revocation of prohibition of Chinese language usage in 2000 by President Abdurrahman Wahid, corporate's identity signs using Chinese letters are flourishing Indonesia. The appearances of identity sign using Chinese letters in the last 10 years is quite confusing considering not many people can read them. The function of identity signs to convey information for public are not fully achieved. Study about how the usage of Chinese letter as a foreign language in identity sign in Bandung with low level of interpretation but can create strong image with high rate of effectiveness and also about the philosophy of Chinese culture contained in the elements that formed identity sign such as name selection, logo shape, Chinese typography, and color, has not been written.This study assess the existence of restaurant's/cafe's identity sign located in Bandung, West Java. By analyzing the elements in Chinese letter identity sign, this study seeks to evaluate the legibility of Chinese letter identity signs. Knowing the exact level of effectiveness of a identity sign for the next design, designers can notice more the recipient background, so they can still functioning as identity sign and convey information about the existence of restaurants and cafes. In addition, this study tries to identify the elements of Chinese culture contained in the Chinese letter identity sign, by elaborating visual element analysis of identity signs, such as: the selection of names, colors, shapes, the usage of symbols in Chinese culture and font type. Chinese society is a society that its culture has evolved over thousands of years. Starting from the color in Chinese culture has its own significance, also typical objects in Chinese culture has profound meaning for the people. Some elements of Chinese culture can be felt so deeply in restaurant/cafe identity sign that is designed in Chinese letter.Chinese letter that serves as text to convey information becomes ineffective, because of its presence in Bandung, a city that the majority of communities can not speak Chinese. Therefore, Chinese characters used in identity signs in Bandung shift their function from text (logotype) to be ornaments (logogram) that give the feel and identity of Chinese. So text message is no longer the main thing to be said, but image is, as a primary goal to be conveyed.

Abstract

Mostly, coins are made from metals, because of their function as an exchange device in minor transaction. In addition to another function of coins, is their value as collectible items. Both sides of coins have been keeping a great story on it, but less people are notice about this tiny forgettable stuff. Focused on Indonesian Rupiah, sorts of cultural elements and wonder of Indonesian natures are showed up on most of these coins. Equals to an archive, they captured every government's movements in some social programs on its surface. This research is going to examine and lists every details of samples, consist of 72 coin emissions in time period 1951-2009 by learning them with content analysis method and visual analysis theory. In visual communication design study, this research is trying to know further about nation's history through the story of a coin.

Abstract

Indonesia adalah negara yang terdiri dari berbagai kebudayaan. Berbagai suku yang mempunyai bahasa dan adat istiadat yang beragam termasuk memiliki bahasa tulis "“ aksara daerah - dan budaya visual berlainan. Indonesia menerima pengaruh bahasa tulis secara bertahap dari bermacam-macam bangsa dan kebudayaan. Sekitar abad ke-15 Masehi bangsa Eropa membawa sistem tatacara baca tulis Latin seperti yang berkembang hingga kini. Indonesia adalah negara yang terdiri dari berbagai kebudayaan. Berbagai suku yang mempunyai bahasa dan adat istiadat yang beragam termasuk memiliki bahasa tulis "“ aksara daerah - dan budaya visual berlainan. Indonesia menerima pengaruh bahasa tulis secara bertahap dari bermacam-macam bangsa dan kebudayaan. Sekitar abad ke-15 Masehi bangsa Eropa membawa sistem tatacara baca tulis Latin seperti yang berkembang hingga kini.Dalam zaman percepatan teknologi ini, penciptaan desain-desain baru selalu diharapkan. Kekayaan aksara daerah maupun keberagaman budaya visual di Indonesia dapat menjadi ide untuk pembuatan font-font (typefaces) di dalam komputer. Seorang perancang huruf dapat menciptakan huruf-huruf latin yang berkarakter aksara daerah dan budaya visual Nusantara dengan menangkap karakter visual (elemen tradisional) daerah. Penciptaan font tersebut dapat dipergunakan untuk memperkaya bidang Desain Komunikasi Visual pada masa kini. Tulisan ini menampilkan beberapa eksperimen karya mahasiswa Tugas Akhir DKV-ITB. Dalam zaman percepatan teknologi ini, penciptaan desain-desain baru selalu diharapkan.

Abstract

Aksara adalah salah satu warisan budaya tradisional yang perlu mendapat perhatian khusus. Hal ini dikarenakan secara fungsi, aksara sudah tidak lagi dipandang sebagai suatu kebutuhan media komunikasi dan tertindas oleh efektivitas huruf latin yang telah mewabah ke seluruh aspek komunikasi global. Hal ini dikhawatirkan akan menyebabkan punahnya aksara Nusantara. Kunci yang paling efektif untuk mengatasi kekhawatiran tersebut adalah melalui teknologi huruf. Dimana aksara tradisional dapat difungsikan sebagai sumber inspirasi typeface komputer tanpa menggeser efektivitas huruf latin.Perancangan desain typeface huruf latin dengan karakter Aksara Batak Toba ditempuh antara lain melalui proses penelitian konstruksi visual, anatomi huruf dan kajian elemen-elemen geometris terhadap huruf latin (Roman) dan aksara Batak Toba yang menghasilkan pola dasar desain huruf. Tujuan final seluruh proses penelitian adalah mewujudnyatakan karakter aksara Batak Toba (aksara silabik) ke dalam huruf latin (aksara fonetik) dalam bentuk font komputer yang fungsional.

Abstract

Local brand  is a fashion creative industry which is favored by young people. There are many local brands in Bandung City. T-shirt is one of local brand products which is related to graphic design. Concept and meaning in graphic design on T-shirt can be researched using The Iconography Theory of Erwin Panofsky. Graphic design on local brands T-shirt in Bandung City leads to simple graphic design trends, display direct branding and variation of color in T-shirts. However, one of brand, Wellborn, features graphic design with its own characteristics on the T-shirt as a creativity, that is surrealistic style graphics design on T-shirt. It is a sub category of T-shirt that can be studied through the meaning of graphic design on T-shirt. It underlies the research on graphic design of Wellborn T-shirt. The research stages are observation, interview, literature study, documentation and analysis which includes pre-iconography, iconography and iconology. The purpose of this study is to know the meaning of Wellborn T-shirt design based on The Iconography Theory of Erwin Panofsky and its association with Wellborn branding. The research method is descriptive qualitative. Objects studied are the surrealistic style graphic designs of Wellborn T-shirts 2017 collection. The samples of data are selected using purposive sampling. The result of the analysis shows that in pre-iconography, there are various objects placed in one graphic design on T-shirt. In iconography, it has a secondary meaning that there are things which are limitless, and in iconology, it has the meaning of freedom of mind/thought because it is related to freedom in imagination, infinity and a difference. They show the characteristics of the Wellborn brand. Keywords: Iconography, Graphic Design, Surrealistic Wellborn T-shirt, Bandung.

Abstract

Penggunaan desain minimalis semakin marak digunakan pada era modern ini. Tren desain yang telah berkembang ini mengakibatkan sejumlah perusahaan seperti Google dan Microsoft, untuk memperbarui desain logo mereka disesuaikan dengan zaman namun justru menerima banyak kritik. Sebagai seorang desainer, mengikuti tren tentu adalah hal yang dapat meningkatkan peluang kerja dan mengembangkan kemampuan agar tetap mengikuti zaman. Namun, semakin banyaknya perusahaan dengan gaya logo yang sama, menghilangkan keunikan dan rasa “akrab” kita dengan logo orisinal mereka. Tujuan dari makalah ini adalah untuk mengetahui alasan rebranding logo ikon Google Workspace dan logo Microsoft Edge. Juga untuk membandingkan kritik para pengguna mengenai desain minimalis hasil rebranding logo ikon Google Workspace dan logo Microsoft Edge pada citra perusahaan Google dan Microsoft.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji model penceritaan sejarah yang terdapat pada elemen visual game. Sampel dari penelitian ini adalah game Type: Rider yang merupakan game bertemakan tipografi. Pengalaman bermain yang dihadirkan melalui game ini menitikberatkan pada lingkungan game berkenaan dengan sejarah melalui sepuluh periode kunci perkembangan huruf. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah analisis konten dengan pendekatan deskriptif-kualitatif. Data diperoleh dari elemen visual game yang terdiri karakter, item dan objek. Selanjutnya data diinterpretasi dan dianalisis. Hasil yang diperoleh bahwa visual game yang tedapat pada gameplay memiliki alur penceritaan linear berkenaan dengan sejarah perkembangan huruf dengan pendekatan sinkronik.
