Abstract

Urbanization significantly transforms cities, introducing challenges affecting environmental sustainability and residents' quality of life. In urban riverbank settlements such as Kotalama, Malang City, these issues are compounded by inadequate planning, environmental degradation, and heightened disaster risks. This study investigates the relationship between living standards and quality of life in the urban riverbank settlements of Kotalama, Malang City. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected through secondary sources, including the Malang City Spatial Plan, and primary data via structured questionnaires distributed to 90 purposively sampled respondents. The analysis highlights the influence of environmental factors, housing quality, and social cohesion on residents' well-being. Regression analysis reveals a significant, albeit moderate, positive correlation between living standards and quality of life, underscoring the role of housing and infrastructure improvements in enhancing community well-being. While access to basic amenities such as water and electricity is adequate, disparities in housing quality and environmental conditions persist, affecting overall quality of life. The findings advocate for interdisciplinary strategies integrating urban planning, environmental sustainability, and participatory governance to address these challenges. This research contributes to urban sustainability discussions aligned with SDG Goal 11, promoting inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities. Keywords: living standards, quality of life, urban riverbank, heightened disaster risk, environmental degradation

Abstract

In the Qur'an, Surah Al-Kahfi, there is a story of the king's journey titled Dh? al-Qarnayn, which to this day is still a mystery about who Dhulqarnayn is and the location where he travels. There is an opinion that Dh? al-Qarnayn was the King of Greece, Alexander the Great (356-323 BC), because there is a similarity in the route of travel, where Dhulqarnayn's journey to the western end (maghrib al-shams) saw the sunset in the black muddy spring of 'aynin hami?ah, and near the spring there was a settlement/qauman, where to the west of this settlement there are no more settlements, so from this point Dh? al-Qarnayn turns towards the East. This route is said to be the same as Alexander's journey to Egypt when he saw the sunset at Siwa Oasis. Near Siwa Oasis was a tribe, and to the west of the Siwa Oasis region was a vast, uninhabited Sahara desert. From this point, Alexander turned eastward. This study aims to determine the impact of Climate Change in the Siwa Oasis area against land cover change. The method used compared climate variable data from 1984-2020 and the comparison of land cover area from satellite images in 1984, 2002, and 2020. The results of this study stated that there was climate change and land cover change in Siwa Oasis. Still, climate change did not have an impact on macro land cover, namely the thematic change of land cover type, where the remains of black muddy springs 'aynin hami?ah in Siwa Oasis are still visible, and there are still settlements/qauman on the banks of the Oasis of Siwa, and to the west of the oasis is still the Sahara Desert, a vast uninhabited area. Keywords: 'aynin hami?ah, Climate Change, Dh? al-Qarnayn, Landcover, Siwa Oasis

Abstract

The urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon has been detected in Malang City, defined as an urban area with a higher surface temperature than its surrounding areas. Pasar Besar Corridor is the center of trade and services as well as the Central Business District (CBD) of Malang City, located in Sukoharjo Sub-District, Klojen District. Although it is an economically strategic area in Malang City, Pasar Besar Corridor is vulnerable to high-intensity UHI exposure, so it is necessary to conduct a study related to the UHI phenomenon. This research aims to compare the results of UHI analysis between macro-scale and micro-scale analysis. Macro-scale UHI analysis was performed using Landsat-8 data as input for Land Surface Temperature (LST), while micro-scale UHI analysis utilized UAV thermal imaging. The results of the analysis show that while Pasar Besar Corridor is not considered a hot spot in Sukoharjo Village at the macro-scale level, a micro-scale UHI has occurred in Pasar Besar Corridor, with the roads being the hot spot, or “heat islands," reaching 48.62 °C. There is a significant difference between the highest temperature from UAV thermal imaging and LST, caused by the differences in resolution and altitude between Landsat-8 data and UAV data. From this research, it is concluded that LST is more suitable for larger study areas, while UAV thermal imaging is better suited for small-scale and more detailed analysis. However, each tool has its limitations, such as lower detailed accuracy for LST and higher costs for UAV thermal imaging.

Abstract

Street vendors are one of the informal trade and services sectors that grow to meet economic needs. The urban economic dynamics of street vendors' existence invite various problems, such as utilising strategic public spaces that should not be used for selling. Six of the eight street vendor locations in the Gresik Urban Area are scattered, occupying road corridors, sidewalks, and public open spaces. This study aims to determine potential locations for relocating street vendors in the Gresik Urban Area. The spatial autocorrelation analysis method used is LISA (Local Indicator of Spatial Association) analysis. X variables include the location of residential land use, offices, tourism, and industry, which are compared with the location of street vendors as variable Y. Based on LISA analysis, the location used as a relocation recommendation is in the high-high quadrant and has a positive correlation. The results of the LISA analysis overlay between Settlement-Street vendors, Office-Street vendors, Tourism-Street vendors, and Industry-Street vendors revealed that the variables for Settlement-Street vendors and Tourism-Street vendors exhibit a positive spatial correlation. Thus, potential locations for relocating street vendors in the Gresik Urban Area are Randuagung Village and Gapurosukolilo Village.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This article explores the teachings, rituals and developments of the Naqshabandiyah Khalidiyah sufi order in Cianjur, West Java. It has been established since the mid-19th century and has played an important role in the spread of Islam in this area called the “Kota Santri/City of Islamic Students”. This is due to the followers of the sufi order still adhering to the principle of khalwat dar anjuman. This principle allows them to practice the spirituality of the sufi order without leaving their social roles and functions as citizens. It can be seen from the diversity of their backgrounds, who are not only farmers, traders and entrepreneurs but also government officials. Moreover, 15 percent of them are millennials. Through a historical approach, this article found that the Naqshabandiyah Khalidiyah sufi order in Cianjur has become an important part of the history of Islamic civilization in the West Java region. The teachings and rituals that blend with the surrounding community have illustrated the diversity of Islam in the archipelago which tends to be Sufi in style since the early days.

Abstract

Abstract

Islamic values encompass important principles and teachings that guide individuals on how to live their lives in this world. Islamic teachings provide guidelines as a basis for decision-making, which is considered an act of worship to Allah SWT. Heritage buildings are crucial for reflecting a society's history and the development of a city. In Indonesia, particularly in Malang City, known as the city with the best colonial planning in the Indies, preserving heritage buildings is vital to preserving their historical, scientific, and cultural values. One way to maintain these buildings is through conversion, which involves changing their functions to meet the needs of a growing city. Since Malang's majority of the population are Muslims who adhere to the principles of Islamic values as their main guide in life, converting buildings should be viewed as an act of worship and align with Islamic teachings. This study aims to identify Islamic values in the conversion of heritage buildings in Malang City and understand how these values can be applied so that the buildings are well-used and managed by the Muslim community. The research method used is a qualitative descriptive approach, which involves describing various discussions and identifying Islamic values based on sources from the Quran and Hadith. This method is applied to explore the principles of conversion through case studies of heritage buildings. The findings highlight Islamic values that can be applied in heritage building conversions, providing recommendations for the Muslim community to manage these buildings effectively in accordance with Islamic values while avoiding actions that lead to shirk (associating partners with Allah).
