Abstract

The Schwaner Mountains stretch in the middle. Identification of geological structures that play a role in the formation of metallic mineral deposits is necessary for more efficient mining exploration and exploitation. The Right Bear is a mining site located on a remote hill in the central part of the island of Kalimantan. This study aims to determine the condition of geological structure and the influence of geological structure on the distribution of copper mineralization at the research site. In this study, surface data was collected in the form of lithological description data and data on the structure of bridles and veins in rocks. The equipment used is a geological compass, a geological hammer, GPS, a magnifier, and others. In general, the stratigraphy of the research area is divided into 3 rock units that can be seen on the geological map, in order from old to young, namely the lithology of the Sandstone Unit, the Dacitic Tuf Unit, the Andesite Unit, and the Quartz Sand Deposit Unit. The mineralization of the Right Bear area consists mainly of high Cu sulfide mineralization. It is related to copper mineralization. Associated mineralization is generally controlled by bridle and fault structures. Mineralization is hosted by volcanic and volcaniclastic rocks in the research area, especially in the middle and southeast of the research area. The geometry of a vein with a width of > 1 cm is called a vein, if it is < 1 cm wide it is called a vein and if it is < 1 mm it is called a vein cord. These veins generally have the direction NNE SSW, NE-SW, NW-SE and WNW-ESE.

Abstract

Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) activities still use mercury (Hg) for the amalgamation processing step. These ASGM activities generate tailings as a mining by-product, representing the primary source of environmental Hg contamination. The purpose of this study was to investigate Hg concentrations in several tailing ponds and analyze the fractionation of Hg in tailings in ASGM on Banyumas District, Central Java, Indonesia. In total, 15 tailings samples were taken from the ASGM tailings storage pond in the study area, and then the total Hg concentration was measured using cold vapor atomic fluorescence spectrometry (CVAFS). Hg fractionation was also performed using CVAFS. The results showed that the total Hg concentration in the tailing pond was very high, exceeding the normal background levels in rock or sediment due to ASGM activities. The fractionation analysis conducted to determine Hg mobility showed that almost all samples were concentrated in the first and second fractions, which had negative environmental effects. The findings from the mercury speciation analysis highlight the critical need for enhanced monitoring of gold mining operations and for implementing responsible tailings management strategies to prevent environmental pollution and protect ecosystem health in the study area.

Abstract

Previous studies have revealed significant hydrothermal alterations within the Beruang Kanan Non-Volcanic Area, Central Kalimantan, Indonesia, resulting in extensive ore mineralizations. This study aims to examine the effects of hydrothermal processes on rock alteration, delineate alteration zones, and establish their relationship to metal mineralization. The research area, situated in the Tumbang Miri district of Gunung Mas regency, forms part of the Corrugated Hills Geomorphological Unit and is traversed by the Schwaner Mountains, with elevations ranging from approximately 50 to 400 meters. Stratigraphic analysis identifies three primary rock units, ordered from oldest to youngest: the Tuffaceous Sandstone Unit, the Dacitic Tuff Unit, and the Andesite Unit. Hydrothermal alterations have resulted in three distinct alteration zones sericitic, argillic, and propylitic characterized by secondary mineral assemblages. This study provides a comprehensive framework for understanding the geological and mineralization dynamics of non-volcanic hydrothermal systems in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia

Abstract

Mafic alkaline igneous rocks, along with their weathering products, are a significant source of Rare Earth Elements (REEs) and critical elements. One of the mafic alkaline rock-related REE and critical element sources is lamproite. Various methods were utilized in this study, including optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), as well as whole-rock geochemical analyses using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry/Optical Emission Spectroscopy (ICP-MS/OES). Based on mineralogical observations, it has been confirmed that the dykes from West Sulawesi are orendite-type lamproite rocks. Sanidine, phlogopite, diopside, and aegirine are the main minerals found in these rocks, including apatite and oxide minerals as accessory minerals. The dykes' whole-rock geochemistry indicates an ultrapotassic nature with a K₂O/Na₂O ratio > 3. Lamproite dykes display an increase in the large ion lithophile elements (LILEs) and a decrease in Ti, Sr, and P, with minimal Eu anomalies. They also show an increase in the light rare earth elements (LREEs), ranging from 901 to 1558 ppm, and a significantly higher content of Zr (968-3083 ppm), Th (152-408 ppm), and U (30-37 ppm). The dykes are related to an orogenic lamproite that formed during post-collisional tectonic continental extension. It contained a significant amount of REE-Zr-Th-bearing minerals, such as apatite (La-Ce-Nd), zirconosilicate (Zr-Ce), and Ba-perovskite (Zr-Th-Ce-Tb). The enrichment of light rare earth elements (LREEs), thorium (Th), and zirconium (Zr) in these dykes can be attributed to both primary and secondary enrichment processes, such as metasomatism and hydrothermal alteration. This phenomenon is evidenced by mineral replacement textures or pseudomorphs, as well as a skeletal texture resulting from rapid cooling in a hydrothermal fluid environment. Therefore, understanding the formation of mafic alkaline rocks, especially lamproite, and their role in enriching REEs and critical elements is a crucial future scientific goal.

Abstract

The Randu Kuning Prospect, located in the Southern Mountains Zone of East Java, Indonesia, represents a magmatic-hydrothermal mineralization system that evolved from a porphyry environment to a shallow-level epithermal system. The prospect is hosted by volcaniclastic, siliciclastic, and carbonate rocks of the Mandalika and Semilir Formations, which are intruded by numerous dioritic bodies related to Late Eocene–Early Miocene magmatism. This study aims to reconstruct the evolution of ore-forming fluids based on fluid inclusion characteristics and their relationship to hydrothermal alteration and mineralization. Fluid inclusion analyses were conducted on ten vein samples representing both porphyry and epithermal environments using a Linkam heating-freezing stage. To support the interpretation, petrographic, X-ray diffraction (XRD), QEMSCAN, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and ICP-MS analyses were also performed. The fluid inclusion data indicate that the hydrothermal system evolved through three major stages. The early porphyry stage was characterized by high-temperature and high-salinity fluids, with homogenization temperatures of approximately 600°C and salinities ranging from 16 to 72 wt.% NaCl equivalent. These fluids were associated with A-type and M-type quartz veins and potassic alteration assemblages. During the intermediate porphyry stage, fluid temperatures decreased to approximately 300–350°C, while salinities ranged from 16 to 48 wt.% NaCl equivalent. This stage was associated with sulfide-bearing quartz veins (AB-type and C-type veins) and phyllic as well as chlorite–magnetite–sericite alteration assemblages. The late porphyry to epithermal stage was characterized by lower temperatures (200–350°C) and lower salinities (2.31–36.74 wt.% NaCl equivalent), resulting in the formation of D-type veins, carbonate–pyrite–sphalerite–chalcopyrite veins, and other epithermal-style veins accompanied by propylitic, intermediate argillic, and locally developed advanced argillic alteration. The progressive decrease in temperature and salinity indicates continuous evolution of the hydrothermal fluids from porphyry c to a shallower epithermal environment, thought to be primarily controlled by cooling and mixing processes with meteoric water.
