Abstract

The training of young soccer players is often suboptimal because training programs are designed without objective data on the players' initial conditions. This study aims to analyze the physical condition and basic technical skills of players at the Ganesha Soccer School (SSB) as a basis for evaluating the training program. A quantitative approach with descriptive methods was used in this study. The population consisted of all Ganesha SSB players, with a sample of 20 people taken using total sampling. The research instruments included physical condition tests (agility, explosive power, reaction time, speed, endurance, strength) and basic technical skill tests (ball control, dribbling, heading, long pass, short pass, shooting). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics in the form of frequency distribution, percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The results showed that the players' physical condition was dominated by the poor category (40%), with the main weaknesses being speed (75% poor to very poor) and strength (100% poor). The majority of players' basic technical skills were in the moderate category (50%), with critical weaknesses in ball control (85% very poor) and short passes (50% poor). The conclusion of this study is that the physical abilities and basic technical skills of SSB Ganesha players in general still need to be significantly improved through a structured training program with a priority on developing speed, strength, ball control, and passing accuracy.

Abstract

Background: This study aimed to measure the effect of High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) with the Tabata protocol on increasing Volume Oxygen Maximum (VO2max) in Central Java handball athletes. The main problem faced is the need for handball athletes to have optimal physical endurance and cardiovascular fitness to support performance during matches. The conclusion of this study is that the HIIT (Tabata) training method has a significant effect on increasing VO2max and can be implemented in handball athlete training programs to improve physical fitness and athlete performance on the field. Methods: The method used was an experiment with a one-group pretest-posttest design, involving 14 Central Java handball athletes selected using the Saturation Sampling technique. The data collection instrument was the Multistage Fitness Test (Beep Test), which was conducted before and after an 8-week intervention period. Data analysis was performed using the Shapiro-Wilk normality test and the paired sample t-test hypothesis test using SPSS version 17. Results: The results showed a significant increase in VO2max in handball athletes after being given HIIT training with the Tabata protocol, with an average increase of 8.8% from pretest to posttest. Conclusions: The conclusion of this study is that the HIIT (Tabata) training method has a significant effect on increasing VO2max and can be implemented in handball athlete training programs to improve physical fitness and athlete performance on the field.

Abstract

Study purpose. This study examined how strategic management is translated into handball achievement development in Central Java, with particular attention to planning, organisational coordination, coaching implementation, monitoring, resource mobilisation, and differences between urban and rural development settings. Materials and methods. A qualitative descriptive design was used. Participants comprised 24 people: four regional handball administrators, five coaches, 12 athletes, and three supporting stakeholders. They were selected purposively because of their direct and sustained involvement in regional handball development. Data were generated through semi-structured interviews, observation, and document analysis, then analysed using a systematic thematic procedure. Credibility was supported by source and method triangulation, an audit trail, and member checking conducted with eight participants. The participants received summaries of their interview statements and the preliminary interpretations through WhatsApp and were asked to confirm their accuracy or provide corrections. Results. Five interconnected themes were identified: strategic direction and talent pathways; coaching delivery and competition exposure; coordination across organisational levels; monitoring as an adaptive rather than purely administrative process; and a persistent resource-and-geography gap. The findings indicate that a well-articulated plan did not automatically produce equal implementation across districts. Urban centres benefited from denser facilities, coaching networks, and competition access, whereas rural programmes relied more heavily on local initiative and informal collaboration. Conclusions. The study extends strategic management thinking in regional sport by showing that athlete development depends on the alignment of deliberate plans with emergent, context-sensitive adjustments. Sustainable handball development therefore requires not only stronger planning, but also clearer inter-organisational roles, equitable resource allocation, locally responsive monitoring, and differentiated support for urban and rural programmes.
