Abstract

The cultivation of oil palm has significantly increased in the Bangka Belitung Islands Province over the past decade, as farmers seek to improve their socioeconomic status. However, the agricultural practices of independent farmers often deviate from the desired standards. Implementing Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) in oil palm cultivation is crucial to optimizing farmers' efforts. This research evaluates farmers' understanding of GAP and the sustainable integration of cattle-palm oil cultivation. The study was conducted in Tiang Tara Village, using face-to-face interviews with independent farmers who own oil palm plantations. The findings revealed a significant lack of understanding among farmers regarding GAP and cattle-palm oil integration. Farmers continued to rely on traditional methods and the wisdom of experienced practitioners. At first, many were reluctant to adopt cattle-palm oil integration due to various constraints, including land scarcity, limited access to livestock grants, and insufficient knowledge of livestock management. The study recommends facilitating technology transfer from experienced farmers to their independent counterparts, increasing the dissemination of GAP knowledge by agricultural extension officers, and providing livestock grants along with intensive training and mentoring. These measures aim to promote sustainable integration of cattle-palm oil cultivation, enhancing both productivity and sustainability for independent farmers.

Abstract

Currently, the performance of the pepper Muntok business continues to decline from time to time. This condition needs to be supported by studying the characteristics of farmers as human resources who carry out business planning and decision-making faced with various threats, challenges, and uncertainties. This study aims to 1) determine personal characteristics; 2) analyze the effect of personal characteristics on entrepreneurial behavior, 3) analyze the effect of personal characteristics and entrepreneurial behavior of farmers on business performance; and 4) analyze the effect of entrepreneurial behavior on business performance. The research method uses a survey method involving 90 farmers. Data analysis was carried out using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) through Smart Partial Least squares (PLS). The results showed that the personal characteristics of the dominant farmer were strongly reflected by indicators of ethnic origin, experience, and age. Personal characteristics positively and significantly contribute to entrepreneurial behavior, and positive entrepreneurial behavior significantly influences business performance. The study results did not directly influence personal characteristics on business performance but through entrepreneurial behavior. Furthermore, the indicator variables of ethnic origin, experience, and age affect discipline, persistence, perseverance, interest in seeking and increasing knowledge, and mastery of technical skills, which can ultimately determine the level of business productivity and the desire to grow through business expansion. Before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, the entrepreneurial behavior of farmers was still strongly shaped by cognitive and affective variables. It is necessary to increase the skills of farmers through training and entrepreneurship development that pays attention to personal characteristics to improve business performance. This study can recommend the Agriculture Office of the Bangka Belitung Islands Province in formulating policies to increase the productivity of pepper plants and the welfare of pepper farmers in the future.

Abstract

Tiang Tara Village in Bakam District, Bangka Regency, has an area of 4,954 hectares with 61.6% used for oil palm plantations. The village faces various challenges in the agricultural sector, especially for oil palm smallholders who have difficulty competing in international markets, lack understanding of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP), and face long supply chains. In addition, smallholders are also hampered by low socio-economic conditions, limited access to technology, and a lack of agricultural knowledge. This empowerment program aims to improve farmers' knowledge and skills through socialization, training, and mentoring in the application of GAP. The targets of this program include increased GAP knowledge and adoption of GAP practices by farmers. The program implementation methods included collaboration with various parties, socialization, intensive training, and technical assistance. Evaluation was conducted through questionnaires to measure the success of the program and obtain feedback from participants. The results showed that the majority of farmers were over 40 years old with low formal education, which affected their understanding of GAP. Currently, the average production of oil palm was still low and farmers' income was insufficient. Through this program, farmers' knowledge and skills in oil palm cultivation are improved, which is expected to increase the productivity and welfare of farmers in Tiang Tara Village.
