Abstract

Abstract

Background: Swine are ideal animal models used for human health and disease research in humans because they have similar anatomy and physiology, one of which is regarding wound healing. Objective: This study aims to determine the effectiveness of balsamum peruvianum on wound healing after myocardial infarction surgery in domestic pigs (Sus scrofa domestica). Methods: The study used five pigs aged 4–5 months, three male and two female. The incision was made using electrocautery in the lateral part of the third and fourth thoracic intercostal spaces, lengthwise from dorsal to ventral. The wound was sutured using Monosyn® 4.0 thread with a subcuticular/intradermal suture pattern. The wound was then given 10% iodine and 10% balsamum peruvianum over the entire surface of the wound twice a day. Recovery was observed on 1st, 4th, 7th, 11th, and 14th days and was scored (grade: 1–4) on macroscopic examination in each pig until day 18th. Results: The observations showed a significant difference in recovery scores on the 11th and 18th days compared to the first day. Conclusion: Topical balsamum peruvianum can be used and is effective for wound healing of skin incisions after myocardial infarction surgery in swine.

Abstract

This case study aimed to illustrate the clinical management and therapeutic strategies required for a 4-year-old male Sulcata tortoise named Swift, who presented with significant health issues, including an oral fistula and bladder stones, often indicative of broader husbandry problems. Swift weighed 13 kg and exhibited symptoms such as extensive white lesions across his mouth, an uneven mouth surface, and a foul odour, along with severe lethargy, refusal to eat or drink, and a drooping head. Physical examination revealed dehydration characterised by sunken eyes and reduced skin turgor. Radiographic findings indicated a mass with increased opacity in the mid-body cavity, suggesting the presence of a bladder stone. The treatment involved anaesthesia with ketamine and midazolam, followed by isoflurane gas for maintenance. Surgical interventions included cleaning the oral cavity, inserting a feeding tube, and removing the bladder stone via a transplastron-celiotomy approach. Postoperative care consisted of intracoelomic administration of antibiotics, vitamins, analgesics, and fluid therapy

Abstract

A 7-year-old male Persian cat was referred to IPB University Veterinary Teaching Hospital with clinical signs of lethargy, weight loss, and loss of appetite and was diagnosed with nephrolithiasis before being referred to IPB University Veterinary Teaching Hospital. Physical examination revealed tachycardia, tachypnoea, pale mucous membrane, 5–6% dehydration rate, cachexia, and palpated masses on the left and right side of the abdominal region. The abdominal cavity was seen as more radiopaque, which resulted in some organs being invisible in the radiographic view. Abdominal ultrasonography showed abnormalities in the liver, gall bladder, and kidneys. The patient was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) with the prognosis of infausta, as the patient was already in a sternal recumbency and could not stand by himself. During hospitalization, the patient was force-fed with a commercial renal diet, and the medical treatments given were intravenous ceftriaxone, vitamins, furosemide, Azodyl®, and intravenous infusion. The patient regained standing ability and survived until the seventh day of hospitalization. However, the owner persisted in bringing the patient home on the seventh day of hospitalization, and the patient died the next day after being brought home.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe ultrasonographic imaging of the spleen, stomach, liver, kidney, bladder, and prostate in piglets (Sus scrofa domestica). Ultrasonography was performed on six male piglets aged 1 month with a body weight of 4-8 kg. Ultrasonography of the spleen, stomach, liver, urinary bladder, and prostate was observed in the dorsal-recumbency position, and the kidney was observed in the lateral-recumbency position. The ultrasound examination used the Chison EBit 60, which is a linear type transducer with a frequency of 9 MHz, transverse and sagittal positions, and a gain of about 55-80. Ultrasonography of the spleen showed that the shape of the spleen head varied in each individual. The results of gastric ultrasonography showed the gastric lining clearly and the similarity of the position, shape, structure, echogenicity, and size of the stomach. The results of liver ultrasonography showed that the echogenicity of the liver tended to be hyperechoic, the kidneys were hyperechoic, and the bladder was hypoechoic due to the use of improper gain. The average length of the right kidney was 4.730.50 cm and the left kidney was 4.080.26 cm. The bladder wall thickness was 1.30.31 mm. Imaging of the bladder showed changes in wall size and echogenicity. Prostate ultrasound results obtained an average length of 2.680.45 cm, width 1.690.35 cm. The results of this study can be used as a reference for normal data on organ position, organ structure, and organ echogenicity of the spleen, stomach, liver, kidney, bladder, and prostate in piglets.

Abstract

An intact female tabby Persian cat, 26-month-old, was brought to IPB University Veterinary Teaching Hospital on the 21st of February, 2023, due to vaginal discharge, inappetence, and lethargy. Physical examination revealed a distended abdomen, mammary gland enlargement, and fever (40.1 C). The heart and respiratory rates were 128 beats per minute and 32 times per minute, respectively. The patient body weight was 3.87 kg. The veterinarian palpated masses inside the abdominal cavity and observed obvious purulent and haemorrhagic vaginal discharge. Haematology showed leukopenia and thrombocytopenia, and the eosinophil percentage of white blood cells was increased (eosinophilia). Blood chemistry analysis showed hyperglycaemia. Ultrasonography showed two hyperechoic masses inside two hypoechoic pouches in the queens uterus, suspected as two dead foetuses (no heartbeat). Roentgen revealed abnormalities in the vena cava caudalis, bronchial pattern in the lung, radioopaque masses in the ventral abdomen, radio-opacity changes in the small and large intestines, and abnormalities in the spleen. The patients diagnosis was pyometra, and ovariohysterectomy surgery was performed on the patient. The patient was treated with additional medicines (antibiotics and others) according to the symptoms. The patients symptoms disappeared, except for the fluctuating febrile and pale mucous membrane. A blood smear performed on the 1st of March 2023 revealed Anaplasma phagocytophilum (A. phagocytophilum) in the white blood cells, and immediately doxycycline treatment (10 mg/kg body weight, twice daily) was given. The patient was discharged from the hospital on the 14th of March, 2023, with no febrile or other symptoms reported. This case is the first report of open cervix-type pyometra and anaplasmosis co-occurrence in a Persian cat from IPB University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Indonesia.
