Abstract

This qualitative research investigates the significance of open family communication in children's adaptation to the presence of a stepmother. Through in-depth interviews with five child informants, we explore crucial factors such as the introduction process, the journey from discomfort to closeness, and the influence of parental communication and openness on children's ability to adapt and establish relationships with their stepmothers. The study also delves into the evolving dynamics of emotional expression, acceptance, and the impact of early experiences on the relationships between children and their stepmothers. Furthermore, we examine the unique roles of stepmothers, communication challenges, and the effects of the COVID-19 lockdown on the depth of conversations. The findings contribute valuable insights to understanding the complexities of children's adjustment within blended families, emphasizing the pivotal role of open family communication in nurturing healthy relationships.

Abstract

Abstract

As a basis for parenting, communication can change patterns of interaction in the family. This study examines how computer-mediated communication (CMC) is related to and influences family communication (including conversation and conformity) in adolescents with disabilities. Participants in this study were 100 adolescents with deafness scattered in Indonesia. Through ANOVA analysis, the results show that CMC is significantly positively related to the conversation, conformity, and interaction between the two. Regression analysis found all four CMC factors as significant predictors affecting 50.4% in the climate of family communication among deaf teenagers. The findings in this study produce an empirical explanation of the CMC motive as a factor in family communication in deaf teens. Suggestions and research for the future are discussed.

Abstract

Early adolescence is a phase that a person goes through at the age of 12-15 and is very vulnerable to emotional changes that will further affect other aspects of life, including independence. There are several factors that support the efforts in preparing independent adolescents. The role of the family, especially parents, is essential in shaping children's character, particularly for children who are starting their early adolescent phase. Independence can also be fulfilled through the educational environment in boarding schools. Role of family communication and boarding school system in forming child independence study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational method type on 222 children who attended Islamic boarding schools. The measuring tools used in this study, the Parent-Child Communication Questionnaire and Independence Questionnaire. The results showed a significant relationship between conversation orientation on the dimensions of self-help, responsibility, socialization, and initiative and a significant relationship between conformity orientation on two dimensions, responsibility and initiative. The implications of this study showed that the communication pattern of parents in boarding schools is laissez-faire; they entrust their children's educational problems to particular institutions, such as boarding schools. The Laissez-Faire type has a low conversational orientation and conformity, which is in line with the results of research that not all variables of independence are significant.
