Abstract

Understanding the concept of whole number operations, especially addition and subtraction, is an important basis in mathematics that must be mastered by students. However, many students still experience difficulties in understanding the material, especially in more complex operations. This study aims to analyze students' concept understanding ability on whole number operation material by applying the demonstration method. The research method used was descriptive qualitative, involving 26 students of class VII.A at Srijaya Negara Junior High School Palembang as research subjects. Data was collected through written tests consisting of five description questions and interviews to explore students' understanding more deeply. The results showed that 47.62% of students scored in the high category, 14.28% in the medium category, and 38.09% in the low category, with an average score of 59.05 which indicates understanding in the medium category. The application of the demonstration method, in which students actively participated by walking on the marked tiles, proved to increase students' enthusiasm and provide a more memorable learning experience. Nonetheless, the proportion of students in the low category indicates the need for more attention in the learning process. This study concludes that the demonstration method is effective in improving concept understanding, but needs to be balanced with additional approaches to support students who have difficulty in understanding integer operation material.

Abstract

Statistical literacy is an essential skill for prospective teachers, as it equips them to become effective educators in an increasingly complex and multicultural society. However, many prospective teachers currently exhibit insufficient proficiency in this area. To address this issue, it is imperative to develop educational programs that prioritize statistical literacy to prepare students to be informed global citizens. This study explores the integration of South Sumatra's local wisdom into statistical literacy education, providing a culturally relevant context for enhancing these skills. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach consisting of four key stages: problem identification, inductive theorizing, hypothesis testing through observational data, and the processes of replication and refinement. Data collection methods included interviews and observations, which were analyzed qualitatively using triangulation techniques. The findings suggest that incorporating South Sumatra's local wisdom into statistical literacy education is feasible, provided the context meets specific criteria, such as it is rooted in the local wisdom of South Sumatra, it is meaningful and relevant to students, it holds significance for the student's learning experience, it actively engages students in classroom activities, it fosters students' abilities to articulate opinions on civic statistics and their social implications, and it involves statistical scenarios that can be effectively integrated into educational activities. This exploratory study contributes to the theoretical development of statistical literacy education by integrating local wisdom, specifically from South Sumatra, and by introducing these cultural elements to both national and international audiences.

Abstract

Statistical literacy is an essential skill, particularly for prospective teachers who will be responsible for teaching statistical concepts to students. However, many prospective teachers struggle to understand and effectively apply these concepts. This study aims to systematically examine previous findings on the use of Learning Trajectories (LT) in statistical literacy instruction for prospective teachers, to design a more structured and applicable instructional framework. The method employed is a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) based on the Xiao & Watson model, which consists of three stages: planning, conducting, and reporting the review. Articles were sourced from the Education Resource Information Centre (ERIC) database through a multi-step selection process involving quality screening, eligibility screening, and relevancy screening, resulting in a final sample of 7 articles out of an initial 31. Thematic coding was used to identify patterns and gaps in prior research. The results indicate that learning trajectories hold significant potential to enhance prospective teachers’ statistical understanding by supporting progressive learning; however, the integration of local contexts and a specific focus on prospective teachers remain limited. In conclusion, contextually designed learning trajectories can serve as a bridge between theory and practice in statistical literacy instruction for prospective teachers.
