Abstract

It is said that men and women communicate differently, attaching different meanings to the same words. Men speak in concrete words to convey information, while women use artistic license and dramatic vocabulary to express and convey their feelings. Therefore, this research aims to (1) identify men's and women’s language features used by the characters in the Do Revenge movie and (2) examine the factors that influence the differences in language use between men and women. This research applied the theory from Lakoff (1975) about women’s language features and factors that influence the differences in language use between men and women, and Coates (2013) about men’s language. The data source is taken from a movie entitled Do Revenge (2022) directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. The researcher got the data from the dialogue of males and females characters. The qualitative research method was used to analyze the data in this study. The technique of data analysis is the descriptive method. The findings show that female characters showed 9 out of 10 women’s language features in total 175. They were lexical hedges or fillers, avoidance of strong swear words, empty adjectives, intensifiers, tag questions, rising intonation on declarative, hypercorrect grammar, emphatic stress, and super polite forms. On the other side, male characters showed 4 out of 5 men’s language features in total 37. They were minimal responses, the use of swearing and taboo language, commands and directives, and question. The researcher also found that psychology and social status are factors that affect the differences in the language of women and men in the Do Revenge movie.

Abstract

This study investigates language that constructs and legitimizes power relations in news discourse published on social media platforms during the covid-19 pandemic. Drawing on Fairclough’s (1995) critical discourse analysis framework, the research aims to reveal the ideological mechanisms embedded in linguistic choices used by state actors in shaping public perception. The study employs a qualitative method with data collected through documentation of news texts posted on Facebook. The news test was particularly concerning to government responses on the pandemic. The analysis involves textual examination, intertextuality mapping, and social semiotic interpretation. The findings reveal that government-affiliated discourse employs declarative structures, institutional deixis, and culturally embedded phrases such as gotong royong. It is to promote national unity, responsibility, and trust in leadership. The texts construct an authoritative narrative that normalizes state intervention and discourages dissent through moral appeals and symbolic alignment with cultural norms. Linguistic features are strategically used to legitimize top-down communication and to frame the state as both protector and moral guide. The study concludes that language in social media news discourse serves as an instrument of symbolic power that maintains ideological hegemony under the appearance of crisis communication and collective solidarity.

Abstract

In writing a literary work, every sentence created by a writer has a purpose of conveying information to the readers, which can be understood by analyzing the presupposition and assertion within each sentence. In this sense, the present study aims on examining how information is organized in the fantasy novel The School for Good and Evil, specifically portraying through the main character. The data for this study was taken from the main character’s utterances within dialogues in the novel, limited to the sentence-level forms. To collect the data from the novel, a documentation method with stratified sampling technique was applied. In this case, the story was divided into five different plot stages with five utterances were selected for each strata, resulting in a total of 25 data for the analysis. Additionally, the present study also applied a qualitative method following the theory of information structure by Lambrecht (1994). These elements were examined to understand how information is structured and what is assumed to be known or introduced as new to the readers. In the result, it revealed that the writer intentionally organize sentences to share information regarding the story in the main character’s utterances throughout the narrative.
