Abstract

Abstract: The purpose of the analysis is to find out the meaning of the verbal and visual signs (signifiers) used in the advertisement and the messages it contained. In the analysis, the main theory that is used is the theory of Semiotic by Ferdinand de Saussure. This theory is applied for the main step of the analysis, to figure out the signifieds of these signifiers. The supporting theories are the theory of verbal and the non-verbal aspect in advertisement which proposed by Gillian Dyer which is applied for the first step in the analysis - to find out the appropriate verbal and visual signs in the advertisement which are then being withdrawn into the main analysis. The finding of this study is that this advertisement uses the verbal aspects which had been categorized into: brand name, slogan and jingle, key words, uses of imperative, intentional omission, formula, and absence of language. The non-verbal signs used are categorized into: age, gender, national and racial, body, prop, and setting. The verbal and visual signs are correlated to form the meanings and real messages of the advertisement. The prominent meaning of the advertisement is that Samsung Galaxy is the best smartphone ever.

Abstract

It is said that men and women communicate differently, attaching different meanings to the same words. Men speak in concrete words to convey information, while women use artistic license and dramatic vocabulary to express and convey their feelings. Therefore, this research aims to (1) identify men's and women’s language features used by the characters in the Do Revenge movie and (2) examine the factors that influence the differences in language use between men and women. This research applied the theory from Lakoff (1975) about women’s language features and factors that influence the differences in language use between men and women, and Coates (2013) about men’s language. The data source is taken from a movie entitled Do Revenge (2022) directed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson. The researcher got the data from the dialogue of males and females characters. The qualitative research method was used to analyze the data in this study. The technique of data analysis is the descriptive method. The findings show that female characters showed 9 out of 10 women’s language features in total 175. They were lexical hedges or fillers, avoidance of strong swear words, empty adjectives, intensifiers, tag questions, rising intonation on declarative, hypercorrect grammar, emphatic stress, and super polite forms. On the other side, male characters showed 4 out of 5 men’s language features in total 37. They were minimal responses, the use of swearing and taboo language, commands and directives, and question. The researcher also found that psychology and social status are factors that affect the differences in the language of women and men in the Do Revenge movie.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the types of figurative language found in the song lyrics of Boygenius’s album “The Record.” The research specifically seeks to determine the various figurative language devices present in selected tracks and to interpret the meanings behind these expressions using Leech’s theory of meaning. By focusing on figurative language, the study aims to enhance the understanding of how artistic language in indie music conveys complex emotions and themes, enriching both literary appreciation and linguistic analysis. The data source for this research consists of the lyrics from four selected songs: “Emily I’m Sorry,” “True Blue,” “Cool About It,” and “Not Strong Enough” from Boygenius’s album “The Record.” Data collection was conducted through an observation and note-taking technique: the researcher listened to the songs on Spotify and obtained the lyrics from www.genius.com. The method of analysis employed a descriptive qualitative approach, with the researcher identifying and categorizing instances of figurative language in the lyrics. The study was guided by the framework of Knickerbocker and Reninger for figurative language types and Leech’s theory for interpreting the meanings, which include conceptual, connotative, social, affective, reflected, collocative, and thematic meanings. The study's results revealed a total of 36 instances of figurative language across the selected songs, encompassing similes, metaphors, personification, synecdoche, metonymy, hyperbole, irony, and paradox. Of these, 36 examples were analyzed in detail to explore their meanings. The findings demonstrate that Boygenius’s lyrics utilize a diverse range of figurative language,

Abstract

This study investigates language that constructs and legitimizes power relations in news discourse published on social media platforms during the covid-19 pandemic. Drawing on Fairclough’s (1995) critical discourse analysis framework, the research aims to reveal the ideological mechanisms embedded in linguistic choices used by state actors in shaping public perception. The study employs a qualitative method with data collected through documentation of news texts posted on Facebook. The news test was particularly concerning to government responses on the pandemic. The analysis involves textual examination, intertextuality mapping, and social semiotic interpretation. The findings reveal that government-affiliated discourse employs declarative structures, institutional deixis, and culturally embedded phrases such as gotong royong. It is to promote national unity, responsibility, and trust in leadership. The texts construct an authoritative narrative that normalizes state intervention and discourages dissent through moral appeals and symbolic alignment with cultural norms. Linguistic features are strategically used to legitimize top-down communication and to frame the state as both protector and moral guide. The study concludes that language in social media news discourse serves as an instrument of symbolic power that maintains ideological hegemony under the appearance of crisis communication and collective solidarity.
