Abstract

Penelitian ini mengkaji fenomena campur kode dalam video YouTube "Is Mental Illness Now A Trend? S**cide & Medical Assistance in D*ing (MAiD)” yang diunggah oleh The Indah G Show. Analisis difokuskan pada jenis dan alasan di balik penerapan campur kode yang digunakan dalam percakapan antara pewawancara (Indah G, dan Joshua Kenji) dan narasumber (Psikolog Astrid, dan Yolanda). Data dikumpulkan melalui metode observasi dan dokumentasi dengan teknik pencatatan. Penulis menggunakan metode kualitatif. Kerangka teori yang diambil dari Hoffman (1991) memberikan jenis dan alasan campur kode. Hasil analisis menunjukkan tiga jenis campur kode dengan yang paling banyak ditunjukkan yaitu campur kode intra-sentensial dengan 57 data. Selain itu, analisis menunjukkan ada tujuh alasan di balik penerapan campur kode dengan yang paling banyak ditunjukkan adalah berbicara tentang topik tertentu dengan 25 data.

Abstract

This undergraduate thesis examines the pragmatic study of the figurative language used in the 2023 fiction novel Happy Place written by Emily Henry. The novel, set against the backdrop of a beautiful seaside town, explores themes of love, friendship, and self-discovery through the lives of Harriet and Wyn. As figurative language is an essential tool for evoking emotions and enriching a story, this research aims to explore how Emily Henry employs various figures of speech, such as metaphor, simile, hyperbole, and personification, to deepen the readers' connection with the characters and their experiences. The study focuses on two primary research inquires: (1) what are the meanings of figurative language found in “Happy Place” Novel by Emily Henry (2) What are the types of the figurative language found in “Happy Place” Novel by Emily Henry. The study aims to identify and describe the language styles in the movie using Perrine's (1982: 61) theory of figurative language, which classifies and explains the meanings of various figures of speech, this study systematically analyzes the textual examples. Furthermore, Abrams and Harpham (2009) theory is utilized to examine the types of figurative language that contain in the dialog or narrative found in the novel. The findings of the study indicate that figurative language in Happy Place serves not only as a stylistic device but also as a fundamental tool for emotional expression and character insight. Through metaphors and other figurative devices, Henry portrays the complexities of human relationships and personal growth, enabling readers to experience the characters’ inner worlds more vividly. The study concludes that figurative language enriches the narrative, deepens the thematic exploration of love and identity, and enhances the novel’s emotional impact.

Abstract

In writing a literary work, every sentence created by a writer has a purpose of conveying information to the readers, which can be understood by analyzing the presupposition and assertion within each sentence. In this sense, the present study aims on examining how information is organized in the fantasy novel The School for Good and Evil, specifically portraying through the main character. The data for this study was taken from the main character’s utterances within dialogues in the novel, limited to the sentence-level forms. To collect the data from the novel, a documentation method with stratified sampling technique was applied. In this case, the story was divided into five different plot stages with five utterances were selected for each strata, resulting in a total of 25 data for the analysis. Additionally, the present study also applied a qualitative method following the theory of information structure by Lambrecht (1994). These elements were examined to understand how information is structured and what is assumed to be known or introduced as new to the readers. In the result, it revealed that the writer intentionally organize sentences to share information regarding the story in the main character’s utterances throughout the narrative.

Abstract

This study examines the portrayal of existentialist principles and characterization in Final Destination 5 (2011), directed by Steven Quale. The research aims to identify the methods of characterization used for the five main characters and explore how Sartrean existentialism is reflected in their struggles. Using a qualitative approach, the study applies Kenney’s method of characterization and Sartre’s existentialist framework to analyze key scenes, dialogues, and character interactions. Data was collected through repeated viewings of the film, with critical moments transcribed and categorized based on characterization methods and existential principles. The findings reveal that Final Destination 5 employs a mixed method, with the dramatic method being the most dominant, supplemented by character on other characters and contextual methods to develop psychologically complex main characters. Existentialist principles emerge strongly, particularly the idea that "existence precedes essence," as characters are stripped of predefined roles and forced to define themselves through desperate actions. The burden of freedom and responsibility is evident in moral dilemmas, while the confrontation between anguish and authenticity shapes their responses to impending death. Sam’s journey from fear to acceptance exemplifies Sartrean authenticity, whereas Nathan’s ethical crisis highlights the paradox of human freedom.

Abstract

This research is carried out to study the types and meanings of compound words found in Kendrick Lamar’s song lyrics on the GNX album. The main goal is to identify how the compound words are formed and to understand their meanings. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The theory from McCarthy (2002) is used to group the compound words into three types: noun compounds, verb compounds, and adjective compounds. To analyze the meanings, the study uses Booij’s (2007) theory, which explains two kinds of meaning in compounds: endocentric and exocentric. The data for this research are taken from all twelve songs on the album. The results show that the lyrics include all three types of compound words. The meanings found in the compounds include both endocentric and exocentric types. These findings are explained using simple written descriptions to give a clear understanding of the compounds found in the lyrics. The analysis shows that the lyrics contain many uncommon compound words, which shows the use of creative and modern language.

Abstract

This research is analyzing types of code switching used by Livy Renata on Denny Sumargo Youtube Channel. In this research, the researchers analyzed three types of code switching, there are: estrasentential code switching, intersentential code switching, intrasentential code switching. Qualitative method research based on content analysis was watching the video, listening the audio, and identifying the code switching. After analyzing the data, the researchers found 38 data and the researchers got a result such as: extrasentential code switching have 6, intersentential code switching have 12, intrasentential code switching have 20.

Abstract

Cepuk cloth has been produced since the 1920s in Tanglad Village, Nusa Penida District, Klungkung Regency, Bali and it has a distinctive motif, different from other clothes produced in the other regencies in Bali. This study tries to identify the lexicons related to cepuk cloth found in the previous research since there have been several research reports on cepuk cloth from 1925. Besides, it also aims to describe the relation between the lexicon and its culture. The data were taken from the previous research concerning cepuk cloth, and they were collected through the observation and documentation methods. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively and the analysis is presented using both formal and informal methods. The results show that there are 66 lexicons related to cepuk cloth categorized into eight, namely characteristic, use, type, motif/pattern, ideology, natural coloring resource, concept of color, and traditional weaving machine. Most of the lexicons are related to flora. There are five categories i.e. cepuk characteristics, uses, motif/pattern, ideology, and color concept that are closely related to Balinese Hindu culture. The lexicons related to culture show the symbolic ecology that investigates the coexistence of languages as symbol systems in Nusa Penida, and the sociocultural ecology that sees language as its part where it then shapes societies and cultures.

Abstract

Dalam artikel ini, peneliti menganalisis kata-kata slang dan juga penggunaan kata-kata slang itu sendiri. Teori yang dikemukakan oleh Allan dan Burridge (2006) yang berjudul Kata-Kata Terlarang: Tabu dan Sensor Bahasa digunakan untuk mengidentifikasi jenis-jenis kata slang. Tujuan artikel ini adalah untuk menganalisis dan memberikan pemahaman kepada pembaca tentang jenis dan penggunaan slang dalam film Sing. Peneliti menggunakan metode kualitatif deskriptif untuk menganalisis data. Peneliti mengumpulkan data dengan mengumpulkan data yang ada dalam bentuk teks. Untuk mengumpulkan data, peneliti menggunakan beberapa langkah, pertama peneliti mengunduh film, subtitle film, dan juga mencari transkripnya. Kedua, peneliti menonton film sambil membaca transkripsi film. Ketiga, peneliti mencatat kata-kata slang yang ditemukan dalam skrip. Hasil menunjukkan bahwa dari analisis jenis-jenis slang, segar dan kreatif adalah yang paling banyak ditemukan dalam skrip film karena sebagian besar kata-kata slang ini adalah kosakata baru yang belum muncul dalam kosakata masyarakat sebelumnya. Dan kata-kata slang digunakan untuk mengungkapkan perasaan para tokoh, untuk mempersingkat kata, untuk menyapa, dan biasanya merujuk pada kelompok orang dalam masyarakat.

Abstract

Translation reproduces a language in the receiving language according to the closest natural equivalent to the source language. The borrowing procedure in translation directly transfers the source language to the target language. The study aims to identify and analyze the types of borrowing words and find the type of borrowing word mostly found on the Emirates Airline Website, translated from English to Indonesian. Data was collected using documentation, note-taking, and mixed methods, namely qualitative and quantitative, to analyze it. The data was analyzed using the theory proposed by Molina and Albir (2002). The analysis results show that both borrowing procedures are found on the Emirates Airline website, which is translated from English to Indonesian. The total data of the two types of borrowing words found is 440, with details of 111 being pure borrowing types, and 329 being naturalized borrowing types, so the borrowing most commonly found in the object of research is naturalized. In pure borrowing, the word is translated directly without modification or change, and naturalized borrowing is the process of adopting a word or expression from the source language and modifying it to fit the standards of the target language, particularly the spelling conventions. The adjustments that occur include various spelling changes, such as switching from consonants to vowels and vice versa, changes between consonants and other consonants, or vowels with other vowels. In addition, there are also omissions of vowels or consonants in words when translated into the target language, the addition of new vowels or consonants, and changes in endings with vowels.

Abstract

This study examines the translation shift phenomenon and covers equivalence in literary translation. The main objective of this study is to identify the translation shifts found in the English and Indonesian texts. The first data of this research is from the original book The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway and its translated version by Damono. This research uses a qualitative research approach with a descriptive analysis method. The data is collected through document analysis by comparing the source text with its translation in Indonesian. The analytical framework is based on Catford's (1965) translation shift theory, which categorizes shifts into level shifts and category shifts. In addition, this study utilizes Nida and Taber's (1969) equivalence theory. The analysis shows that there has been translation shifts in the novel The Old Man and the Sea and its translation. In general, two types of translation shifts are identified in the text. First is a level shift, in which language elements move from one grammatical level to another between the source language and the target language. The second is category shift, which includes structure, class, unit, and intra-system shift. These shifts reflect the different linguistic systems between the source language (English) and the target language (Indonesian). Additionally, two translation equivalents were found, the first a formal equivalent and the second a dynamic equivalent, which the translator used to produce natural and acceptable equivalents in the cultural and grammatical context of the target language.
