Abstract

Abstract. Previous research has proven that individuals raised in intact family structures have better psychological well-being and academic achievement than those raised in non-intact families. However, these findings emphasize only the nuclear family and have not considered the living arrangement factor that allows social support from extended families such as those in the Minang community. This study involved N = 201 students of Minang ethnicity from intact families (n = 160) and non-intact families (n = 41) who lived with nuclear families (n = 162) and extended families (n = 39). The sampling technique was carried out with convenient sampling. The instrument used is the translated Ryff's PWB(Psychological Well-Being) scale with a reliability of 0.912. Meanwhile, data on academic achievement was obtained through the participants' IPK (cumulative grade point index). Family structure data is obtained from participants' answers to the marital status of biological parents. The living arrangement data is obtained from the answer to whom the participants live with to determine the presence/absence of extended family members in their home. The analysis showed no differences in psychological well-being and academic achievement regarding family structure and living arrangements. However, the interactionsbetween groups showed differences in PWB between groups of participants from intact families and groups of non-intact families who lived with only nuclear families. This research shows the importance of paying attention to the context of the participants' socio-cultural environment, producing different conclusions from previous findingsKeywords: academic achievement; extended family; intact family; Minang; non-intact family; nuclear family; psychological well-being.

Abstract

Perilaku pencegahan penularan virus COVID-19 selama masa pandemi pada tingkat individu seperti yang dihimbau oleh pemerintah sering tidak dijalankan. Ketidakpercayaan kepada sains merupakan salah satu basis masalah pengabaian pencegahan tersebut. Pada sisi lain, mereka yang aktif melakukan pencegahan memiliki komitmen yang besar agar virus tidak menular. Komitmen tersebut lebih efektif ketika diikuti dengan berbagi informasi terkait dengan perkembangan virus dan pencegahannya. Penelitian ini bertujuan menguji model perilaku pencegahan dengan anteseden kepercayaan kepada sains serta komitmen dan berbagi informasi sebagai mediatornya. Uji model dilakukan pada data empat variabel tersebut, yang dikumpulkan melalui survei online dengan 544 responden melalui pemodelan persamaan struktural. Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa tujuan tersebut tercapai yang ditunjukkan oleh kecocokan model teoritis dengan data yang didukung oleh parameter yang kuat. Artinya, kepercayaan kepada sains merupakan basis dari upaya pencegahan COVID-19, tetapi efeknya melalui komitmen pencegahan yang diperkuat dengan berbagi informasi. Implikasi penting dari hasil tersebut adalah perlunya pemaparan bukti-bukti ilmiah tentang permasalahan baru seperti COVID-19 atau dampak perubahan iklim dengan membagikannya kepada publik untuk menguatkan komitmen pencegahannya.

Abstract

Youth face significant obstacles as they transition from education to work, as job seeking has become more complex. Friendship and networking are considered important resources that acilitate youth entry into a meaningful job market. This study investigates how youth (re)construct the boundaries of friendship and networking. It also examines the ways in which friendship and etworking can smooth the transition from education to meaningful work: work that fulfills the workers’ rights and provides opportunities to grow. Employing a short-term ethnographic approach, this study involved 20 youth aged 20-23 years who met one of two criteria: final semester students who were about to graduate or had just graduated and were actively seeking employment, or workers who had graduated within the last year. Data were collected through observation and in-depth interviews, with photographic documentation capturing participants’ behaviors and social interactions, and interviews eliciting their perspectives, reasoning, and lived experiences of navigating the transition from education to work. The results show that friendship and networking are defined by three relational aspects: self-disclosure, closeness, and support. These aspects determine the extent to which relationship is considered friendship or networking, depending on the intensity of those aspects of the relationship. The study highlights that in the context of the education-to-work transition, friendships and networks often intertwine. This study suggests that promoting early networking may support a smoother transition toward meaningful work.
