Abstract

Low consumption of vegetables and fruits are one of the causes of digestive problems, coronary heart disease, and diabetes. Farmers are a vulnerable group for consuming vegetables and fruit less than the recommended 5 portions (250 grams) a day. The aim of this study was to analyze the relationship between vegetable and fruit consumption and the level of blood sugar among farmers with non-communicable diseases in the integrated health post (Posbindu) of Pakusari Health Center, Jember Regency. A retrospective cohort study design was used to analyze secondary data of Posbindu registered patients from January to March 2020 among 140 farmers. The characteristics of participants, vegetable and fruit consumption, and blood sugar were measured through the monitoring card of Posbindu. The data were analyzed using Chi-square tests (p-value <0.05). Among 140 farmers as many as 71.4% were identified who consumed vegetables and fruit less than 5 portions a day and 35.7% who have hyperglycemia. There was a relationship between vegetable and fruit consumption and the farmer's blood sugar level (p-value: <0.001; χ2: 13.144). Farmers who consumed vegetables and fruits less than 5 portions a day were 5 times more likely to experience hyperglycemia (RR:5.727; 95% CI=2.072–15.827). Therefore, community health nurses and health care providers should provide counseling to improve the consumption of vegetables and fruits to prevent the incidence of hyperglycemia among farmers.

Abstract

Background: Problem - Based Learning (PBL) is a method of student-centered learning. In PBL, students become centered to the learning process, whereas the teacher is the center of learning in lecture-based learning (LBL). Purpose: This study aimed to compare the effects of PBL and LBL on students’ learning outcomes and satisfaction on an undergraduate nursing course. Methods: Quasi-experimental study. Participants included 161 students from two different classes of the course; in 2013, as a control group (n = 88) and in 2014 as an intervention group (n = 73). Both groups received LBL, which is practice in the lab and clinic, but the intervention group also received PBL. Secondary data analysis of students’ learning outcomes was measured using students’ learning progress in tests from lecture (theory, paper, laboratory, and clinical), while students’ satisfaction was measured using teaching method evaluation from students. Results: Students’ learning outcomes (theory, laboratory, and clinical) in the PBL group were significantly more than in the control group (p<0.001), whereas paper lesson outcomes were higher in control group compared to the intervention group (t=6.43; p<0.001; 95% CI=1.46-2.76). There was more satisfaction with the PBL method. There was no relationship between students’ satisfaction and learning outcomes (p>0.05). However, students considered greater satisfaction in PBL compared to LBL. Conclusions: In problem-based learning, students contributed a lot to solving the problem and getting the skills and knowledge they needed. Students are also expected to be motivated.

Spearman correlation test showed significant relationship stress levels with self-efficacy of Pulmonary tuberculosis patients p < 0.001 correlation (r) of -0.631, which showed strong relationship. There is a relationship between stress levels and self-efficacy in pulmonary TB patients. Nurses are expected to be able to provide comprehensive nursing care through health education related to the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis and motivate patients to continue to recover in treatment to completion.

Abstract

Background: Older adults often experience sleep disturbances due to the physiological decline of aging. Sleep disturbances predict physical and mental health problems in older adults, especially a risk of depressive symptoms. SEFT (Spiritual Emotional Freedom Technique) is a therapy that combines spiritual power energy through prayer and psychology to improve the condition of mind, emotions, and behavior. Since little is known about the SEFT used to enhance sleep quality and reduce depressive symptoms in older adults. This study aimed to explore the effect of the Spiritual Emotional Freedom Technique (SEFT) on sleep quality and depression in older adults. Methods: This study used the quasi-experimental pretest-posttest design with a control group. Forty-six older adults in nursing homes participated in this study, divided into the experimental and control groups. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Mann–Whitney (U), and Wilcoxon tests. Results: This study showed significant differences in sleep quality (p-value: 0.03) and depression (p-value: 0.05) in older adults before and after the implementation of SEFT. The results of the Mann Whitney Test – (U) test indicated a significant difference in the sleep quality of the participants in the intervention group compared to the control group (p-value: 0.011). However, conversely, there was no significant difference in depression symptoms of the older adults in the control and intervention groups after implementing SEFT (p-value: 0.075). Conclusions: Our findings infer that the SEFT can be considered a useful nonpharmacologic approach to improve sleep quality and depression among older adults in nursing homes. However, further research is needed concerning the impact of SEFT on older adults' depression.
