Abstract

Increased blood pressure causes vascular damage to the blood vessels in the neck when carrying blood to the brain, resulting in pressure on the muscle nerve fibres, which causes head pain. One of the independent nursing interventions that can be used is Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR). This case study is to determine the application of PMR to reduce pain scale in elderly with hypertension at UPT PSTW Jember. This Final Scientific Work uses a descriptive design with the Case report method, which describes the application of Evidence-Based Nursing Practice, namely PMR, for headaches in the elderly with hypertension. Therapy is given to a patient in two meetings a day for seven days for 15 minutes. Measurement of pain scale using the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS). The results after being given PMR showed a decrease in pain levels by reviewing complaints of decreased pain, the average pain scale from 4.4 NRS to 3.4 NRS, the average systolic blood pressure from 155.7 mmHg to 142.8 mmHg and the average diastolic blood pressure from 94.2 mmHg to 90 mmHg. PMR therapy can reduce chronic pain by increasing the elasticity of blood vessels, reducing muscle tension and reducing headaches.

Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disease which is often found in the elderly caused by a degenerative process. Progressive muscle relaxation technique is one of the non-pharmacological therapy to decrease blood glucose levels in diabetes mellitus. This case study aimed to analyzed the effect of progressive muscle relaxation technique on problem of instability of blood glucose levels in elderly. This research design is case study. The sample of this research is one elderly who had diabetes mellitus type 2. The data collection by measuring blood glucose levels during pre-intervention in the morning and post-intervention in the afternoon. The elderly had intervention twice a day for 20 minutes and forward until 5 days. Data collected and processed by using statistical T-test dependent. The elderly with diabetes mellitus type 2 given progressive muscle relaxation technique experienced a decrease in blood glucose levels from pre to post intervention with p-value 0.005 which means it is significant. The application of progressive muscle relaxation technique given to the elderly affect to decrease blood glucose levels in the outcome of pre and post intervention.

Abstract

Kata kunci: refleksi diri, pengendalian diri, lansia, Panti Sosial Tresna Werdha   Abstract Health behavior among elderly is related to an individual's ability to reflect on and control their behavior. This research aimed to identify the correlation between elderly self-reflection and self-control in nursing homes. This cross-sectional study involved 113 elderly selected using Simple Random Sampling. The Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS) and The Self-Rection and Insight Scale (SRIS) were used to measure self-control and self-reflection. Somers'd and Spearman-Rank were used to analyze the association between variables. This study showed that most older people had moderate levels of self-reflection and self-control, 59.3% and 66.4%, respectively. Gender was significantly correlated to self-reflection (p-value 0.033, r=-0.201), and a self-reported past medical history was significantly related to self-control with a weak relationship strength (p-value 0.015, r=-0.211). The Spearman-Rank Analysis indicated a strong and significant correlation between self-reflection and self-control (p-value 0.000, r=0.687). The higher the self-reflection in the elderly, the higher their self-control. Self-reflection and self-control are related to elderly behavior, including how elderly know their behavior, learn from experience, and regulate behavior to suit the health goals they want to achieve. Therefore, there is a need to increase self-reflection and self-control in the elderly, especially in the elderly at nursing homes. Keywords: self-relection, self-control, elderly, nursing homes
