Abstract

In this study, electrochemical detection of acrylamide using hemoglobin (Hb)-modified core–shell Fe3O4@Au nanostructures was conducted. Fe3O4 nanoparticles (~4.9 nm) and core–shell Fe3O4@Au (5.0–6.4 nm) nanostructures were successfully synthesized by the thermal decomposition method. Electrochemical investigation revealed that the optimum amount of Hb of 2 mg/mL could be immobilized in 0.1 M acetate buffer solution (pH = 6). Moreover, the detection of acrylamide using Fe3O4@Au/Hb was evaluated by the cyclic voltammetry technique. A linear calibration curve (R2 = 0.98) in the concentration range of 0.1 to 1.0 µM could be achieved with an estimated limit of detection, limit of quantification, and sensitivity of 0.136 µM, 0.453 µM, and 0.4411 µA/µM, respectively. Furthermore, the developed biosensor exhibited high selectivity in the presence of ascorbic acid, melamine, and caffeine. The developed biosensor was applied to the detection of acrylamide in coffee samples and validated using the standard high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method. The concentration of acrylamide in coffee samples was determined to be 37.450 and 35.377 ppm using electrochemical measurement and HPLC, respectively.

Abstract

We developed a low-cost dye-sensitized solar cell (DSSC) using TiO2 fabricated via rapid breakdown anodization (RBA) and ultrafast room-temperature crystallization (URTC). The prepared TiO2 was deposited on a self-made fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) conductive glass, and the FTO/TiO2 system was sensitized using curcumin dye. The DSSC was constructed by sandwiching the FTO/TiO2/curcumin electrode with an I−/I2 electrolyte and a transparent carbon counter electrode prepared using a liquid–liquid interface system. The characterization results showed that the TiO2 freshly prepared via URTC was transformed into an anatase crystalline phase, which exhibited a 3.10 eV band gap and a 10.08 nm average crystallite size, comparable to those of the TiO2 prepared via the conventional 450 °C annealing treatment (3.13 eV, 11.60 nm). The photocurrent activity of the URTC-prepared TiO2 under ultraviolet light (0.10 mA/cm2) was also comparable to that of the annealed TiO2 (0.12 mA/cm2). In addition, a transparent carbon electrode (FTO/Ct) was prepared successfully; it exhibited a ±58.26% transparency under visible light and comparable electrocatalytic activity to Pt-coated FTO. The DSSC based on FTO/TiO2-URTC/curcumin and FTO/Ct showed front and back illumination efficiencies of 0.47% and 0.26%, respectively. These results are only slightly lower than those of the conventional DSSC with FTO/annealed TiO2/curcumin//FTO/Pt, which exhibited front and back illumination efficiencies of 0.52% and 0.36%, respectively.

Abstract

Background: Arsenic is known as one of the carcinogenic metalloids and can cause various health issues when ingested or inhaled over prolonged periods of time. Methods: In this work, boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrode was altered with gold particles (Au) arranged by seeding continued with electrodeposition of HAuCl4 solutions at the electrode surface, will be used as electrode to detect As3+ and As5+ in lake water. The deposited gold particles on the BDD surface were studied with scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Detections of As3+, As5+, and mixture solutions of As3+ and As5+, carried out with anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV). Findings: The, pre-treatment using NaBH4 carried out for reduction from As5+ to As3+, indicate an improvement at the sensitivity of As3+ and As5+ detection with a good linear responses for each solution in range concentrations of 0.02-0.2 ppm for As3+ and As5+, with R2=0.9759 and R2= 0.9876, respectively. Conclusion: Furthermore, limit of detections of 0.0335 ppm and 0.0239 ppm can be attained for As3+ and As5+ displayed high linearity, revealing that detection of each species of As3+ and As5+ can be conducted in mixture of As3+ and As5+. Novelty/Originality of this Study: This study involves the modification of BDD electrodes with gold (Au) using a combined seeding and electrodeposition technique, which enhances stability and sensitivity for detecting arsenic (As³⁺ and As⁵⁺) at low concentrations. Additionally, the research introduces a pretreatment method using NaBH₄ to facilitate the detection of As⁵⁺ by reducing it to As³⁺, thereby improving the detection limits with anodic stripping voltammetry (ASV).

Abstract

The purpose of implementing this community service activity is to provide understanding, knowledge and the importance of developing the Syiah Kuala University Campus (USK) as a means of education. The method used is the lecture method, which describes the material that has been prepared, the question and answer method, which is to respond to the level of understanding of the participants' understanding of what has been conveyed and the discussion method, namely the presenter and participants have a dialogue that discusses issues around USK Campus II. While the targets of this activity are community leaders from Neuheun Village, Durung Village, and Ladong Village, Mesjid Raya District, Aceh Besar Regency. The results obtained are expected to build awareness and increase public understanding of the importance of developing Campus II Syiah Kuala University as an educational facility.

Abstract

Child marriage has often been one of the most heated debates amongst Islamic jurisprudents (‘fuqahâ’) and is even opposed by various groups for a variety of reasons, including legislative regulations, health, social and economic concerns, and children’s rights. This article examines the legality of underage marriage according to Islamic law scholars. This research is a library-based study using a conceptual and comparative approach. The data sources for this research include the prominent fiqh texts of the Mâlikî, Hanafî, Shâfi‘î, Hanbalî, and Shia Imamiyya schools. The data is analyzed using content analysis methodology. The findings of this study indicate that the four Sunni schools and the Shia Imamiyya school recognize the permissibility of child marriage, with various conditions, particularly regarding the guardian (wali) who performs the marriage and the potential benefits or harms of the marriage. This study complements research on the perspectives of the five major fiqh schools regarding the legality of child marriage. It also provides an alternative perspective for interpreting the legal regulations on marriage in Indonesia.

Abstract

Eels are a valuable economic resource in both local and international markets due to their high nutritional content, particularly their rich vitamin and micronutrient profile. However, their populations face increasing threats from overfishing and habitat degradation, necessitating a deeper understanding of their distribution, growth patterns, and ecological characteristics. This study aimed to identify eel (Anguilla bicolor) species inhabiting the Krueng Sawang River, analyze their length-weight relationships, and assess biometric variations among different sampling locations. Fieldwork was conducted in April and May 2018 across three sampling stations in North Aceh District: Tanoh Anoe (Station 1), Gle Dagang (Station 2), and Babah Krueng (Station 3). A total of 100 eels were collected, with individuals from Station 1 averaging 50.17 cm in length and 237.78 g in weight, those from Station 2 averaging 31.96 cm in length and 135.93 g, and specimens from Station 3 averaging 35.18 cm in length and 148.21 g. Morphological analysis confirmed that all collected specimens belonged to A. bicolor, indicating a homogeneous population within the river system. The length-weight relationship analysis revealed a negative allometric growth pattern, suggesting that increases in length outpace weight gain. These findings provide valuable insights into the population dynamics of A. bicolor in North Aceh, offering essential baseline data for future conservation efforts and the development of sustainable fisheries management strategies.

Abstract

Integrated Multitrophic Aquaculture System (IMTA) is a sustainable approach to aquaculture, utilizing ecosystem dynamics by integrating various species. This study examined the growth and survival of milkfish (Chanos chanos), tiger shrimp (Penaeus monodon), and oysters (Crassostrea spp.) in IMTA systems with different stocking densities. A 30-day experiment using a nonfactorial-completely randomized design with four treatments and three replications was conducted. The results showed that the implementation of IMTA had no significant impact on the survival rate of milkfish, tiger prawns or oysters in all treatments. However, important variations in growth parameters were observed. Milkfish and tiger prawns showed the highest weight and length gain in treatment B, followed by treatments A, C, and D. Similarly, oysters showed optimal growth in treatment B, followed by A, C, and D, based on weight gain, length, width, and shell thickness. Throughout the study, the physicochemical parameters of the water remained within acceptable ranges, thus supporting ideal growth conditions for the cultured species. These findings underscore the potential of IMTA to increase aquaculture productivity while upholding the principles of environmental sustainability. By optimizing stocking density and encouraging species diversity, IMTA presents a promising avenue for advancing integrated aquaculture practices, in line with the FAO's blue economy concept and ecosystem approach to aquaculture. Future research should concentrate on refining the IMTA system and evaluating its long-term ecological and economic consequences.

Abstract

Water quality is one of several aspects that affect the success of aquaculture business. This study analyzes water quality and assesses its impact on aquaculture enterprises in the Rancong pond region of Lhokseumawe City. The study ran from November to December 2018. The water quality of the Rancong pond was sampled directly and tested in multiple labs. The field survey and purposive sampling strategy separated the research location into four stations with three water sampling points. Temperature, salinity, turbidity, brightness, pH, dissolved oxygen, alkalinity, total organic matter, BOD5, total ammonia nitrogen, nitrite, nitrate, phosphate, lead (Pb), total Vibrio bacteria, total general bacteria, and phytoplankton types and abundance were measured. The suitability of water quality is assessed using descriptive analysis, scoring, and matching. The investigation indicates that the quality and maintenance of the source water are highly suitable (S1). Traditional vannamei shrimp ponds in Rancong, Lhokseumawe City, should be maintained as fisheries cultivation areas.

Abstract

The increasing use of mercury in the industrial sector poses significant risks to freshwater ecosystems and aquatic organisms. Milkfish (Chanos chanos), a widely consumed species, is now being reared in freshwater environments, raising concerns about mercury bioaccumulation and food safety. This study aimed to determine the median lethal mercury concentration for milkfish at 96 hours (LC50) in freshwater using an experimental approach and probit analysis. Five mercury concentrations were tested: 0 (control), 0 .110 mg Hg/L, 0.195 mg Hg/L, 0.347 mg Hg/L, and 0.618 mg Hg/L. The results indicated that mercury is highly toxic to milkfish, with a 96-hour LC50 of 0.147 mg Hg/L. Clinical symptoms observed included loss of reflex movements, irregular swimming, frequent surfacing with widened mouth and operculum openings, convulsions, and ventilation of the ram before mortality. These findings highlight the acute toxicity of mercury in freshwater milkfish and underscore the potential health risks associated with mercury contamination in aquaculture systems.
