Abstract

Mangrove ecosystems have functions and benefits that are quite important both physically and biologically. Mangroves can act as natural coastal protectors from damage due to abrasion and large waves and also provide shelter for associated biota. Development of a mangrove ecosystem that can be developed into a tourism area and an environmental-based education center. Pengudang Village has the potential to be developed into a mangrove ecotourism area with its resources and biodiversity. Development into a mangrove ecotourism area is constrained by public understanding of the types of mangroves, benefits and associated biota in the mangrove ecosystem of Pengudang Village. Community service activities carried out aim to provide understanding to the Pengudang Village community about the potential and types of mangrove resources and associated biota. The activity process begins with a survey of the potential of the mangrove ecosystem including recording, identification, and classification of mangrove species. The introduction and socialization of the condition of the man-grove ecosystem was carried out to the coastal community of Pengudang Village. From the results of field identification, it was found that the mangrove condition of Pengudang Village is in good condition with a dense density. Associated biota in mangrove ecosystems vary from gastropods to mammals. The identification results are disseminated to the Pengudang Village community.

Abstract

THE EFFECT OF ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS OF MAKROZOOBENTOS IN MANGROVE REFORESTATION AREA OF SERIBU ISLANDS, INDONESIA. Benthic fauna (macrozoobenthos) has been considered as one of the criteria for assessing the success of a mangrove restoration program. A correlation study of environmental characteristics of macrozoobenthos in the Seribu Islands mangrove reforestation area was carried out in March 2014. It aims to determine the effect caused by environmental characteristics (water physical-chemical parameters) on its macrozoobenthos density. Data of macrozoobenthos biota in the Seribu Islands mangrove reforestation area were collected by making line transects and plots drawn from the reference point (outermost mangrove stands) and perpendicular to the coastline to the mainland, where observations were made at three stations (islands). Six families and six macrozoobenthos species have been found in the Seribu Islands mangrove reforestation area. The composition and density of the highest species were Littoraria scabra. The measured environmental characteristics were not very different between stations and also did not exceed the quality standard threshold. The lower the salinity and DO concentration, the higher the density of macrozoobenthos, while the higher the concentration of water pH, the lower the density of macrozoobenthos. Then the temperature parameters with macrozoobenthos density had no effect.

Abstract

Macrobenthic fauna is often used as a bioindicator of environmental quality. However, information about the environmental characteristics and the existence of macrobenthic fauna in the mangrove reforestation area is still very limited. The study of the profile of the Seribu Island mangrove reforestation area based on the characteristics of the macrobenthic environment and fauna was carried out in March 2014. The aim of this study is to determine the ecological conditions of the waters around the Seribu Island mangrove reforestation area. To find out the relationship between environmental characteristics and macrobenthic fauna with observation stations carried out by statistics on Correspondence Analysis (CA), while the environmental characteristics that determine macrobenthic fauna and their relationships are carried out with Principal Component Analysis (PCA) statistics and simple linear regression. The results of the study show that the concentration of measured environmental characteristics is not very different between stations and does not exceed the quality standard threshold for marine life. Then the macrobenthic fauna found consisted of 6 species with the highest density at Station 3 (05.00 ind/m2) and the lowest at Station 1 (02.00 ind/m2). At Station 1 the pH and temperature concentration is very high, while Station 2 and 3 have high salinity concentrations. Macrobenthic fauna Atilia (Columbella) scripta, Metopograpsus latifrons, Littoraria scabra, Saccostrea cucculata, and Cardisoma carnifex can be associated with mangroves at all stations. In addition, the environmental characteristics that determine the presence of C. carnifex macrobenthic fauna are pH parameters, where the higher the pH concentration, the lower the density of C. carnifex. Then the environmental characteristics that determine the presence of the macrobenthic fauna of S. cucculata, M. latifrons and A. scripta are determined by DO (Dissolved Oxygen) and salinity parameters namely the lower DO (Dissolved Oxygen) concentration and salinity, the higher the density of S. cucculata, M. latifrons and A. scripta.

Abstract

Many mangrove habitats contain gastropods, which are greatly influenced by environmental conditions and the density of mangrove trees. One of the gastropods discovered was Terebralia palustris, which is frequently employed as a bioindicator of mangrove health. A research of T. palustris (Linnaeus, 1767) was done in September 2020 at three observation sites in the mangrove forest of Payum Beach, Merauke Papua. This study aims to evaluate the density, the relationship between body length and weight, the quality and characteristics of the environment, and the distribution and density determinants of T. palustris in Payum Beach. T. palustris and mangroves were gathered by constructing a 50 m perpendicular to the seashore line transect and creating 10 x 10 m plots for mangroves and 1 x 1 m plots (within a 10 x 10 m plot) for T. palustris. The study revealed that the density of T. palustris fluctuated at each observation station, with the highest density occurring at Station 2 (54.20 ind/m2) and the lowest density occurring at Station 3 (19.67 ind/m2). The T. palustris growth pattern is negative allometric. The calculation findings indicate that the mangrove density is high (> 1000 ind/ha) and that the water quality parameters range from 28.33 to 31.67°C, DO 5.60 to 7.67 mg/L, pH 6.83 to 7.53, and salinity 29.33 to 30.00‰. PCA analysis revealed that the distribution of observation stations and environmental parameters formed two groups, with Station 3 influenced by salinity, temperature, DO, and a high mangrove density, and Stations 1 and 2 influenced by a high pH and a big mangrove trunk diameter. According to the results of PCA analysis, the distribution and density of T. palustris are determined by temperature, DO, and mangrove density.

Abstract

There are many reports of a decline in the population of horseshoe crabs in Asia, but knowledge about the distribution of horseshoe crabs on the coast of Bintan Island is still limited. We conducted interviews in 15 locations on the coast of Bintan Island. The information we collect is about the distribution of potential spawning areas and the utilization of horseshoe crabs in each area. Respondents were randomly selected as the surveyor walked through each study site. Verification of the distribution and breeding grounds of horseshoe crabs by respondents was done by asking respondents to indicate the location where they had seen pairs of horseshoe crabs mating, juveniles, and horseshoe crab eggs met; we also validated with direct observations made in the field. Respondents reported that in 15 locations, they had seen juveniles and horseshoe crabs in pairs. One respondent directly observed horseshoe crab eggs on the beach, and only a few found horseshoe crabs laying eggs. Respondents who saw paired horseshoe crabs generally worked as fishermen. We found three juvenile locations for horseshoe crabs, namely at Tembeling, Pengujan and Pengudang locations. At three locations Tachypleus gigas and Carcinoscorpius rotundicauda were found. Horseshoe crabs on Bintan Island are used as fertilizer, medicine and wall decoration. In this study, local wisdom provides essential information regarding the potential distribution of spawning grounds and the utilization of horseshoe crabs on the coast of Bintan Island  Banyaknya laporan mengenai penurunan populasi kepiting tapal kuda di Asia, tetapi pengetahuan tentang distribusi kepiting tapal kuda di Pesisir Pulau Bintan terbatas. kami melakukan wawancara di 15 lokasi di pesisir Pulau Bintan. Abstract

Community service activities have been carried out regarding education on recycling bark waste for the Sei Jang Tanjungpinang coastal community group. The purpose of this activity is to provide knowledge to the community regarding the technical recycling of recycling bark waste shells into useful-value products. This is an effort to minimize large waste from leftover seafood which is inorganic and very difficult to decompose in the environment. The problem faced by the community is an increase in the amount of food waste originating from seafood, especially the Barking Snail (Strombus sp). Along with an increase in population and an increase in the number of culinary tourists visiting Tanjungpinang City, it will have an impact on increasing the volume of shell waste, which will ultimately have an impact on increasing the load of waste discharged into the aquatic environment. This is a very serious problem to be addressed, considering that the shell waste is very difficult to degrade in nature. The method used in this activity is practical training methods and assistance in the process of recycling bark waste shells to produce handicraft products in the form of handicrafts in the form of flower decorations and other handicrafts, as well as assistance to form community groups that recycle shells by flying. The results that have been achieved in this activity are the realization of the application of science and technology through the application of technical cleaning and bleaching and processing of Gonggong shell waste into environmentally friendly products. In addition, the formation of community institutions for coastal community groups that are able to manage and carry out joint activities in recycling waste into handicraft products in the form of handicrafts that can bring in income for the community.
