Abstract

This research investigates the effectiveness of integrating ChatGPT, an AI language model, in enhancing students' proficiency in writing recount texts. By analyzing the impact of ChatGPT on students' writing skills, the study aims to evaluate the quality, coherence, and language proficiency of student-written outputs before and after incorporating the tool. Additionally, it seeks to identify and propose strategies to overcome potential barriers to maximize ChatGPT's impact on students' ability to write recount texts. The study's findings hold theoretical significance in advancing knowledge on AI integration in language education and practical implications for researchers, students, and teachers alike, offering insights into the potential benefits of AI technologies in writing instruction.

Abstract

This study assessed EFL (English as a Foreign Language) students' perceptions of using Wattpad to improve their creative writing skills. Wattpad, a community-based platform, allows students to read, write, and share stories, which helps them develop creativity, narrative structure, and vocabulary. This research was conducted on 10 EFL student participants at the North Sumatra State Islamic University (UIN-SU), using a phenomenological approach. Data was collected through in-depth interviews to understand the experiences, benefits and challenges students face in using Wattpad for creative writing. This research aims to explore how social interaction and feedback from the Wattpad community contribute to the motivation and development of students' writing skills, particularly in terms of narrative ability, creativity, and character development. In addition, this research also aims to identify the challenges students face in using Wattpad and investigate how this platform can be optimized in classroom learning settings for EFL. The research results show that Wattpad provides significant benefits, especially in increasing student motivation through feedback and interaction with the community. Students reported improvements in their narrative techniques, creativity, and character development. However, challenges such as lack of technical guidance in creative writing and difficulties in time management were also cited by participants. In conclusion, Wattpad has proven to be an effective tool for supporting creative writing, especially if incorporated into the curriculum with proper guidance. This research suggests that further research should be carried out to optimize the use of Wattpad in learning and overcome the challenges faced by students.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan anak pada aspek literasi yang mencakup aspek literasi membaca, menulis, menyimak dan berbicara. Metode penelitian ini menggunakan metode penelitian tindakan kelas (PTK). Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara observasi, wawancara, dan dokumentasi. Teknik analisis data yang digunakan yaitu dengan deskriptif, kualitatif dan kuantitatif. Adapun indikator dalam keberhasilan penelitian yang ditetapkan adalah 75%. Penelitian ini dilakukan dalam dua siklus, setiap siklus terdiri dari lima kali pertemuan. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan literasi pada anak usia 5-6 tahun mengalami peningkatan seperti: anak mampu mengucapkan nama sendiri, mampu membaca 2 suku kata, mampu mengenal lambang huruf abjad, mampu meniru tulisan kalimat pendek dan mampu menuliskan huruf yang didengar. Pada siklus I rata-rata kemampuan literasi anak sebesar 43,85%, nilai tersebut belum mencapai keberhasilan yang telah ditentukan, oleh karena itu maka dilakukan kembali tindakan pada siklus II dan hasil rata-rata kemampuannya meningkat dengan persentase 76,35%. Dengan adanya peningkatan tersebut maka penelitian dihentikan karena telah mencapai target yang ditentukan, dan untuk guru sebaiknya memanfaatkan media literasi digital ini dalam kegiatan belajar sehingga kemampuan anak dapat meningkat.

Abstract

This study aims to explore students’ perceptions of the use of Wordwall as a digital media tool to enhance vocabulary learning in English classrooms. As vocabulary is a crucial component in language acquisition, interactive and engaging media such as Wordwall are expected to improve student learning outcomes and motivation. The participants of this study were five seventh-grade students from a junior high school, selected using purposive sampling based on their experience using Wordwall during English lessons. This research employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design to gain an in-depth understanding of students’ subjective experiences. Data were collected through participant observation, questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews. The questionnaire was based on three constructs from the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2): performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and hedonic motivation. Data were analyzed thematically by identifying patterns, formulating meaning, and describing the essence of the participants’ experiences. The findings reveal that students generally perceive Wordwall positively. Most participants stated that Wordwall made vocabulary learning more enjoyable and helped them memorize new words faster (performance expectancy). They also found it relatively easy to use after guidance from the teacher (effort expectancy) and expressed that the learning process felt more like a game than a traditional classroom activity (hedonic motivation). However, some students experienced initial confusion with the interface and game rules. Overall, the use of Wordwall created a more engaging and motivating learning environment, supporting vocabulary development through interactive digital learning experiences. Abstract

The study aims to determine the effect of using an English vocabulary learning application called "Drops" as a tool in helping English as foreign language. This app was designed to be installed into smartphones with Android and IOS System. This study uses a quasi-experimental design, with as many as 30 students in the experimental group who study with the Drops application and 30 students in the control group who use conventional textbook based learning methods. Data were collected through test vocabulary with pretest and post-test to assess the effect of the using this app on vocabulary learning in junior high school in Deli Serdang. The results of the statistical analysis showed that there was a significant increase in vocabulary learning outcomes in the experimental group compared to the control group (p<0.05). At the conclusion of the study, researcher realized that the use of the Drops application significantly improves students' vocabulary learning outcomes. The combination of gamification, visual learning, and micro-learning in Drops enhances engagement and retention, making vocabulary learning more effective and suggesting that digital applications can serve as valuable tools in language education.

Abstract

In the 21st century, English proficiency is vital for educational and professional advancement. This study explores the introduction of English lessons in elementary schools in Panei District, Simalungun Regency, North Sumatra. The research highlights the importance of early English education for equipping students with essential skills to thrive in a globalized world. Despite the growing significance of English, rural areas like Panei District face challenges such as limited resources, insufficient trained personnel, and the need for culturally relevant teaching methods. The study utilizes a descriptive research approach combined with documentary analysis to examine the implementation and impact of English language programs. Findings indicate that early exposure to English enhances students' language awareness, engagement, and basic communication skills. However, challenges in resources and varying student proficiency levels were observed. Continuous support and teacher training are identified as crucial for the program’s sustained success. The study underscores the need for a structured approach and community involvement to effectively integrate English into rural educational settings.
