Abstract

Pembelajaran bahasa Inggris sejak usia sekolah dasar membantu siswa mempersiapkan diri dalam menghadapi tantangan pada era globalisasi sejak dini. Akan tetapi, terdapat beberapa permasalahan yang cukup sering dialami siswa dalam proses pembelajaran bahasa Inggris, antara lain kurangnya rasa percaya diri dan rendahnya motivasi belajar. Berdasarkan latar belakang tersebut, kegiatan pengabdian berupa pelatihan bahasa Inggris bagi siswa SD Sathya Sai dilaksanakan. Tujuan kegiatan ini adalah meningkatkan kepercayaan diri serta mengasah kemampuan siswa untuk berkomunikasi dalam bahasa Inggris. Metode yang diterapkan dalam pelatihan ini adalah metode gamifikasi. Permainan yang dilakukan antara lain tebak kata dan permainan berbisik. Unsur kompetisi dalam permainan tersebut membuat siswa lebih antusias dalam mengikuti kegiatan pelatihan. Berdasarkan hasil evaluasi, pelatihan bahasa Inggris dengan metode gamifikasi di SD Sathya Sai telah berhasil meningkatkan kemampuan komunikasi siswa dalam bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, permainan yang dilakukan dengan metode gamifikasi membuat siswa antusias dalam mengikuti kegiatan sehingga dapat meningkatkan motivasi belajar dan kepercayaan diri mereka.

Abstract

Advertisement is a media platform used by people or companies to promote their product on social media or in public. There are signs in every advertisement. This study is concerned with analyzing the verbal signs found in fast food advertisements. There are two aims of this study: (1) to find out the verbal signs in the fast-food advertisements and (2) to analyze the meaning of the verbal signs that are found in fast-food advertisements. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method, and the data were analyzed based on the theory by Barthes (1967) about the signifier and signified and the meaning. The result of this study shows the verbal sign in the form of written text. In this research, the researchers found twenty-seven verbal signs in fast food advertisements.

Abstract

Song is a work of art created by humans and used for entertainment or a means to express and reveal the contents of the heart. By using songs, many people try to say something or convey a message to someone from the bottom of their hearts. The purpose of this research is to find out the interpersonal meaning of Taylor Swift’s Song “Anti-Hero”. This research applied a qualitative method to analyze 15 lyrics of the “Anti-Hero” song. This research is based on the theory of interpersonal meaning proposed by Halliday. The result showed that the song “Anti-Hero” by Taylor Swift used interpersonal meaning elements of Mood and Residue in the lyrics. Therefore, it can be concluded that the song “Anti-Hero” used interpersonal meaning to explain the meaning of the song to the listeners to show the feelings, emotions, and ideas of the songwriter. This helped the songwriter in creating a more meaningful connection between the music and the listeners.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to identify the types and meaning of deixis in Juice Wrld’s song “All Girls Are the Same”. The descriptive qualitative method was used in this study. The data was collected using a number of procedures. The researchers listened to the song on Spotify in the initial phase. Next, the researchers searched the internet for the lyrics of the song “All Girls Are The Same.” Subsequently, the deictic words in the song lyrics were analyzed. Ultimately, the data was categorized into several categories by the researchers based on their selected hypothesis. Theoretical framework proposed by Yule (1996) was applied to analyze the data. Based on the analysis, this study found 67 deixis, which are personal deixis, spatial deixis, and temporal deixis. The total frequency of deixis in the lyrics of "All Girls Are The Same" is 67, with 56 deictic words or 83,58% from personal deixis, 4 deictic words, or 5,97% from temporal deixis, and 4 deictic words, or 10,45% from spatial deixis. The word "I" is the most prevalent word in the lyrics of “All Girls Are The Same”, making personal deixis the most frequently used deixis in those lyrics.

Abstract

In literary works such as novels, language plays a vital role in telling stories. Novels that will be distributed to readers from various countries will usually be translated first, and it is the job of the translator to maintain several important elements such as proper names so that they remain under the original meaning of the text. This way, readers can fully grasp the essence of the story in the translated version. The main aim of this study is to discover the different kinds of proper names and translation techniques used in Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel, The Secret Garden. To achieve this, the research incorporates Newmark's theory. The data was collected through observation and documentation, with notes being taken during the process. As a result, the study identified three distinct types of proper names in The Secret Garden novel, such as people’s names, geographical terms, and names of objects. Furthermore, during the research, seven different translation procedures were discovered. These procedures include transference, naturalization, couplets, expansion, shift or transposition, cultural equivalent, and literal translation. Out of all the translation procedures studied, the transference procedure was the one most used. It allowed the translator to retain the original names as much as possible while translating the novel into another language.

Abstract

Instagram, one of the most popular social media platforms, is widely used by Indonesian people to connect and communicate with each other worldwide. The impact of Instagram influenced many economic sectors, such as marketing, creative industry, and personal branding. Therefore, social media is utilized through content production to gain additional income and extend engagement. One of the most commonly known Indonesian Instagram accounts is AjikDewa_43, which focuses on Balinese entertainment and non-entertainment news. Most of the posts are wrapped with general Balinese humor content supported by entertaining captions. However, due to systematic error, the automatic translation feature cannot correctly render the text into the target language of certain users. Therefore, this research aims to identify, categorize, and evaluate errors of automatic machine translation on Instagram caption posts with a case study of @Ajikdewa_43 media platform. Qualitative method with descriptive analytic approach was used to analyze the data. The data were obtained from 10 selected posts with short or long captions. Koponen’s theory of error category was applied in this study to describe the translation quality of Instagram captions. The result showed significant errors of the machine translation in identifying slang and local language as well as the contextual and grammatical meaning of the language. Several identified translation errors linked with 4 basic translation concepts were found, namely Omitted Concept (10%), Untranslated Concept (40%), Mistranslated Concept (40%), and Substituted Concept (10%).

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the strategy used in the Titanic television series for making politeness requests. In the course of this research, a descriptive qualitative methodology was utilized. The Titanic television series, which was directed by Robert Lieberman and broadcast in 1996, served as the source of the data. The information was gathered by going on YouTube and watching episodes of the Titanic television series. The data were analyzed by applying the theory that Brown and Levinson had proposed (1987). The findings demonstrated that the characters utilized strategies of politeness in order to lessen the likelihood of a threat to their own self-image. The research uncovered four distinct forms of politeness: bald on record, bald off record, positive politeness, and negative politeness.

Abstract

A movie is a medium to convey a story that is packed in the form of moving pictures. Conflicts that appear in a movie can influence the psychological aspect of the character, especially the motivation of each character to do something after facing a conflict or having a problem. This study was conducted to analyze how psychological aspects affect the character’s feelings and behavior in a movie entitled “Ticket to Paradise”. This study applied a qualitative method. The data were collected by note-taking the scene in the movie that contained psychological aspects of Georgia Cotton. The study focused on the data that showed action triggered by psychological aspects. The data were categorized and analyzed using Bernhardt's theory of the psychological aspect of human motivation (1945). The findings were presented in a table and explained descriptively. This study identified that the aspect of organic needs or appetites should be fulfilled to reach Georgia’s satisfaction, the aspect of wants could influence Georgia to solve a problem, Georgia’s behavior was affected by the aspect of emotion, the aspect of feeling and experience influenced Georgia in making a decision, and social motives shown by Georgia as a social creature in a society.

Abstract

Despite the recognition of gender equality within the Indonesian legal system, there remain various instances where women have disadvantages in domains including education, employment, and political representation. This study aims to highlight actions taken by women in fostering women’s empowerment through essays by applying the framework of Feminist Critical Discourse Analysis (FCDA). This study applied qualitative method to conduct a content analysis of essays that address topics relating to women. The data included in this study were taken from the essays featured in the book “The Feminist Minds”. To determine gender-related issues and the actions taken to address them, the data was collected by reading and taking notes on the relevant passages of the essays. Following the collection of data, the analysis was carried out using the theoretical framework of FCDA. Several misconceptions regarding feminism and women-related issues, including street harassment, sexual abuse, and victim blaming, were discussed in the essays. Furthermore, the actions that must be taken to address them were also elaborated. The strategies included awareness campaigns, educational initiatives, legislative efforts, community support, and addressing negative stereotypes and attitudes. In conclusion, progress in addressing women-related issues can be achieved through collaborative efforts involving communities and affiliated organizations.

Abstract

Tantangan dalam melakukan proses belajar mengajar secara daring adalah memastikan materi pelajaran dapat tersampaikan dengan baik kepada peserta didik. Berdasarkan pengamatan yang dilakukan di SDN 11 Dauh Puri Denpasar, khususnya di kelas 3, materi pembelajaran belum tersampaikan dengan baik karena hanya mengandalkan media pembelajaran yang konvensional yaitu buku lembar kerja siswa (LKS) yang dimiliki siswa dan dikerjakan oleh siswa berdasarkan instruksi melalui pesan pada WhatsApp. Kegiatan ini berupaya untuk memberikan pilihan lain dalam menyampaikan materi Bahasa Inggris pada siswa-siswa sekolah dasar SDN 11 Dauh Puri Denpasar, sehingga materi pelajaran yang telah tersusun dapat tersampaikan dengan baik dan optimal. Metode pelaksanaan kegiatan ini observasi, questionnaire dan metode demonstrasi melalui video pembelajaran. Selain itu, latihan intensif diberikan untuk mengetahui sejauh mana pemahaman peserta didik terhadap materi yang diberikan. Hasil yang diperoleh adalah metode video pembelajaran yang di lakukan di sekolah dasar ini membantu peserta didik untuk lebih memahami materi yang disampaikan, karena mereka dapat melihat dan mendengarkan secara langsung bagaimana pengajar mengucapkan kata atau kalimat dalam Bahasa Inggris. Selain itu, video pembelajaran menjadi kegiatan yang terintegrasi untuk mempelajari keempat keterampilan berbahasa, yaitu, reading, writing dan listening.
