Abstract

The research aims to analyse gender oppression in the short story Sweat written by Zora Neale Hurston. This study seeks to understand how gender oppression is represented through literary work. Using a qualitative method, the study relied on textual analysis by identifying and closely examining selected narrative data that highlight the main character’s experiences of oppression. The analysis was conducted using the theory of oppression proposed by Iris Marion Young, which offers a framework for understanding how various forms of oppression affect marginalised individuals. The findings reveal that four forms of oppression are reflected in the story, namely exploitation, marginalisation, powerlessness, and violence. The main character was exploited through her unrecognised and undervalued labor, which sustained her household while benefiting her abusive husband. She was marginalised through her social isolation and lack of emotional support from those around her. Her powerlessness was portrayed through her inability to make decisions or assert control over her own life, largely due to emotional and psychological manipulation. Finally, she was subjected to physical and emotional violence that further stripped away her sense of safety and autonomy. These findings highlight how Sweat critiques gender-based oppression in both domestic and societal contexts.

Abstract

The study examines how toxic masculine behaviors are represented in the novel Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens. Using Makhanya's (2023) theory on the hazardous effects of masculinity as a framework, the study focuses on the various forms of toxic masculinity and their impacts on the characters. The findings reveal four types of toxic masculine behaviors in the novel: overcompensation through risky behavior, ineffective conflict resolution strategies, domestic abuse and power dynamics, and sexual assault. Among these, domestic abuse and power dynamics emerge as the most dominant form. The analysis highlights how male characters embody these harmful traits to assert dominance and control, perpetuating cycles of violence and trauma. In conclusion, toxic masculinity operates as a deeply rooted cultural problem, reinforcing patriarchal structures and leaving lasting emotional scars on its victims. This portrayal demonstrates that toxic masculinity is not merely an individual flaw but a systemic issue that perpetuates control, violence, and the silencing of women in both private and public spheres.

Abstract

This study investigates how Grice’s Cooperative Principle and Leech’s Politeness Principle function in unscripted podcast dialogues on the topic of plastic surgery. While these pragmatic frameworks have been widely applied in analyzing spoken interaction, their application in informal digital contexts such as podcasts remains underexplored. Using a descriptive qualitative method, this research analyzes transcripts from two YouTube podcast episodes: Megan Fox: My Plastic Surgery Story by Call Her Daddy and Why We Became Plastic Surgeons by Dr. CalvertTV. The findings reveal that speakers generally adhere to the maxims of quality, quantity, relation, and manner, while also applying politeness strategies including tact, modesty, and agreement. However, instances of flouting were also observed, often serving rhetorical purposes such as humor, emphasis, or the negotiation of sensitive topics. The study concludes that both Gricean and Leechian principles remain relevant in analyzing digital communication. Podcast discourse provides valuable insight into how meaning, relational alignment, and conversational coherence are co-constructed in real-time, shaped by both linguistic choices and social context.

Abstract

The New Colossus by Emma Lazarus is a well-known poem that expresses ideas of immigration, freedom, and national identity. This study aims to analyze the poem through two perspectives, namely poetic structure and cultural meaning. It focuses on how poetic devices such as metaphor, imagery, symbolism, alliteration and personification contribute to shaping the poem’s message. Using a qualitative method, the research applied Kemple's (2019) semiotic theory to interpret poetic devices as symbolic signs, while Hall's (2013) theory of representation was used to examine how the poem reflects and responds to changing social contexts. The analysis reveals that these poetic elements build a persuasive and emotional message that supports the poem’s theme of inclusivity and hope. It also shows that the meaning of the poem has shifted over time, especially in relation to modern immigration debates. This research highlights the poem’s dual role as a literary text and a cultural artefact. The findings suggest that poetic language can carry lasting social influence and that literature remains a relevant tool in understanding national identity.

Abstract

From a feminist standpoint, this article examined Louisa May Alcott's Little Women with a perspective on issues such as the complexity of womanhood, existential independence, personal choice, and the continuous fight against objectification. This study, using a qualitative method, examined how the characters, especially the March sisters, negotiate the gender roles imposed upon them in 19th-century society. Every sister has a different reaction to the cultural standards of femininity, and their experiences expose the restrictions placed by social roles. Jo's defiance of conventional wisdom, particularly her refusal to marry for convenience and her will to be a writer, questions the belief that a woman's fate rests just in marriage and housekeeping. Marmee also stresses over simple social compliance the value of financial independence and personal conviction. These character paths highlight how women try to establish autonomy inside limited systems and reflect more philosophical questions about freedom, choice, and identity. Little Women challenges the cultural narratives that try to define and restrict women in other ways than telling a coming-of-age story through its subtle representations. This study highlights the continuing importance of the work and shows how literature can be an important lens through which feminist issues, especially the complexity of gendered experience may be explored and understood.

Abstract

Figurative language is a language intended to create images, associations, or other effects in the minds of readers or listeners that go beyond the literal meaning of words. Although figurative language is often used to enhance the beauty of a song lyrics, not everyone who listens to a song can comprehend the message being sent. Misunderstanding can result from an improper understanding of figurative language. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the types and meanings of figurative language in a song entitled "Give Me Love" by Ed Sheeran. This study used a descriptive qualitative approach to collect the data and identify the figurative language contained in the lyrics of “Give Me Love”. The data were analyzed using the theory of figurative language by Johnson & Arp (2018) and Knickerbocker & Reninger (1963). The finding of this study shows that "Give Me Love" consists of 7 types of figurative language, namely simile, personification, hyperbole, metaphor, irony, synecdoche, and metonymy. Based on the analysis of the meaning, it can be concluded that figurative language can be used to convey messages in spoken and written form. Figurative language is very important in song lyrics to enhance the beauty of the song and convey the message to listeners.
