Abstract

This paper assesses the effectiveness of financial depth and financial inclusion in the mitigation of output volatility during the 2008-2010 Global Financial Crisis. The paper also evaluates whether finance is more effective in countries with more developed financial systems, higher levels of economic developments, sounder banking systems, and better political stability. Employing a cross-sectional dataset covering more than 100 countries, our results indicate the ability of finance in subduing output volatility during the crisis. Our evidence is also concrete in suggesting the success of finance in reducing output volatility in more financially developed, advanced, and politically stable countries. However, the evidence is unclear on whether finance is beneficial for countries characterized by low, intermediate, or high banking stability. In addition to these findings, the preponderance of evidence tends to suggest the better ability of financial usage as compared to financial access in mitigating aggregate fluctuations during the crisis. Finally, our additional analysis reveals that finance functions well in stabilizing output when output volatility is high.

Abstract

Indonesian Islamic banking market share projected by Bank Indonesia is an integral part in developing the industry in the country. By setting a projection which will then be used as a benchmark / target, Islamic banks can make a necessary program to attract new customers which eventually increase its asset. If the increase of the asset is significant, the Islamic bank market share may increase. The problem is that the current projection by Bank Indonesia seems to be off target. It means that the projection is pretty much above the actual value. This paper attempts to utilize two projection methods namely Spline and Auto-ARIMA which we think can provide a better result. This study uses the monthly data covering period since January 2006 until December 2012. The result shows that our projections, especially using Spline method, are closer to the actual value of the Islamic banking industry market share. It means that the gap between the projection and the actual value of market share is lesser than the gap on the Bank Indonesia calculation. Moreover, this study argue that, the projection of the Islamic banking market share made by BI will not be achieved unless with government support. So far, government has not made any policy which deposit some of the national budget in the Islamic bank. This study calculates that if government regularly depositing 1% of total National Government Budget in Islamic banks, the projection of Islamic banking market share made by BI will be acheived. As a conclusion, the role of government is very significant in developing the Islamic banking industry in Indonesia.

Abstract

Carbon trading is pivotal in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. However, the contribution of waqf-based forests—forests established on endowed land—remains underexplored. This research addresses this gap by investigating the potential, schemes, stakeholders, opportunities, challenges, and strategies for waqf-based forests in carbon trading. Through a literature review, in-depth interviews, and field observations, the study found that waqf-based forests can contribute to carbon trading and raise Islamic awareness. The findings identify two potential schemes for selling carbon credits from waqf-based forests: the Ministry of Environment and Forestry’s carbon exchange and direct business-to-business (B2B) transactions. Due to the sustainability of waqf land and its added ecological, economic, social, and Islamic values, waqf-based forests can produce high-quality carbon credits and provide an inclusive and sustainable green economy. However, challenges such as suboptimal land area, lack of technical knowledge, and the absence of a carbon trading fatwa need to be addressed. Proposed strategies to overcome these challenges include document bundling, collaborations with Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, direct B2B sales, and selecting plants that enhance carbon economic value. This research offers in-depth insights into the potential of waqf-based forests as significant players in carbon trading, emphasizing their inherent sustainability values. Keywords: carbon trading, green economy, high-quality carbon credit, waqf-based forest

Abstract

This study presents a comparative analysis of waqf regulation, governance, management, and innovation in Muhammadiyah (Indonesia), Malaysia, and Brunei Darussalam. The aim is to identify similarities and differences in their waqf systems and evaluate how governance and innovation impact community welfare. A qualitative library research approach was used, focusing on waqf-related regulations, management structures, and asset development strategies. Muhammadiyah manages waqf independently through internal institutional policies, guided by Law No. 41 of 2004. In Malaysia, waqf is regulated by the State Islamic Religious Councils (Majlis Agama Islam Negeri, MAIN), which promote corporate-based management such as property development and Sharia-compliant investments, exemplified by the Selangor Waqf Corporation (Perbadanan Wakaf Selangor, PWS). Brunei Darussalam centralizes waqf under the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kementerian Hal Ehwal Ugama, KHEU), with strict regulations and strong state support for Islamic economic empowerment. In terms of innovation, Malaysia demonstrates a more advanced corporate waqf model with productive asset management, while Brunei prioritizes centralized stability. Muhammadiyah continues to adopt new models such as cash waqf and Islamic investments, though improvement is still needed in professional asset governance and transparency. This research introduces a novel comparative framework by analyzing multi-country waqf governance and applying the concept of Good Waqf Governance, including transparency, accountability, and efficiency. Unlike previous studies that examined isolated cases, this paper maps cross-national governance strategies and their socio-economic outcomes. Furthermore, it highlights Malaysia’s and Brunei’s potential as models for Muhammadiyah’s reform. One key recommendation is to integrate Malaysia’s corporate waqf framework into Muhammadiyah’s waqf strategy to enhance long-term sustainability and economic returns. The study contributes to the discourse on Islamic philanthropy by offering scalable strategies for revitalizing waqf institutions in the Muslim world.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to test Shariah compliant duration models on Islamic banks in Indonesia. This will be achieved using data of earning assets and risk bearing liabilities of Indonesian Islamic banks from 2009 to 2019. Using multiple regressions the results suggest that Shariah compliant duration models are robust to calculate duration of earning assets, return bearing liabilities and Islamic banks. This research adds to the previous research of testing Shariah compliant duration model. Ultimately, it will improve profitability, risk efficiency and Shariah efficiency by improved Shariah compliant measures of risk management. This will ultimately improve market capitalization and returns stability in the long run. A major limitation of the study is very short length of data of Islamic banks. Still another limitation is difference in commencement of business of various Islamic banks that makes length of data unequal.

Abstract

The inheritance system in Muslim societies has an urgent social, spiritual, and economic impact. There is not a single human being who will not be involved in inheritance matters. Because for every person who dies, the main thing that must be taken care of is the issue of inheritance, whether large or small amounts are left behind. However, it cannot be denied that there will be cases where an heir has no heirs so that after his death, the inherited property is ownerless. In this case, the state is responsible for its management through Baitul Maal or an appointed agency. The methodology used in this research is a literature study of relevant documents and journals on related topics. Through this approach, this research seeks to search for and combine various existing data and information to gain a comprehensive understanding of efforts to manage unkempt inheritance in Indonesia, its optimization model through waqf instruments, and opportunities and challenges for its development in the future.

Abstract

This research measures the efficiency of waqf funds managed by philanthropic institutions in Indonesia using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach over the 2013-2021 period. The unit of analysis consists of nine philanthropic waqf institutions. In the measurement of efficiency, the study takes human resource expenses and operational costs as inputs and collection and distribution of waqf funds as outputs. The findings indicate that the efficiency of philanthropic organizations in handling waqf funds varies from year to year between 2013 and 2021. The paper also notes that the Covid pandemic has no substantial impact on the efficiency of the waqf institutions. Interestingly, regional institution clusters are more efficient than mass organization and national institution clusters. Abstract

This study aims to determine the Islamic Corporate Governance (ICG) model of entrepreneurship-based cash waqf. Using qualitative research methods and a multi-case study approach, research data were obtained primarily (in-depth interviews), online report documentation, journal articles, and books. Data analysis conclude that the ICG model of entrepreneurship-based cash waqf is built from a unique waqf membership model (waqf donations come from the company's Corporate Social Responsibility), determination of special donors, and determination of beneficiaries of waqf productivity funds in public facilities development programs that are integrated with entrepreneurial activities. This study recommends the issuance of entrepreneurship-based cash waqf shares, both permanent and temporary.

Abstract

This study aims to design a conceptualization of the waqf program crowdfunding system implemented by an online donation platform and strategies for increasing waqf digitization. This research uses a descriptive qualitative method by collecting data through in-depth interviews with application managers, waqf institutions’ leaders, donors, and documentation. The results of this study show that the crowdfunding system runs through the stages of the waqf program proposal, verification of publications and socialization of the waqf program. The donation platform’s strategy in increasing the digitization of waqf includes providing access to waqf institutions for program approvals, notification of sustainable programs, additional features of Islamic studies on the application, digital publications of creative waqf programs, surveys of digital waqf program locations, creation of digital content and videos of waqf activities. In addition, other strategies include solicitations and response and input spaces on the application. The crowdfunding system implemented by the Amalsholeh platform can help waqf institutions find donors and increase community interest in online waqf or digitalization of waqf. Keywords: crowdfunding system, waqf, waqf digitization strategy.
