Abstract

This Community Service (CS) activity has the theme of introducing English learning for children at Naungan Kasih Orphanage of St. Elisabeth Ende. This is done with the aim of guiding children in this Orphanage so that they can have English skills and knowledge. The main problem faced by these children is for kindergarten and elementary school children, are not yet familiar with English, while high school level children already know and obtain English learning, but with limited media, time, etc. so they learn less English. This makes them have no motivation and no interest in learning English. This activity went well and they are enthusiastic. This activity uses several learning strategies made by the CS team so that children do not get bored learning English, and have the attraction of learning English. It is expected that the children in this orphanage are able to apply the use of English in schools and communities and overcome the difficulties that they face. Children learn well, full of enthusiasm and it is expected that there will be an improvement in their English learning.

Abstract

This article analyses the translation strategies of the film text in the second part of the film “PERUNDUNGAN” entitled “Jamuan Terakhir”. The research aims at identifying gaps in translation that may affect the audience's understanding of the emotional and narrative context of the film. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected from dialogue transcripts and film texts, which were then analyzed based on Gottlieb's theory of eleven translation strategies. The results showed that transfer translation strategy dominates with 51 data (79.69%), followed by paraphrase with 8 data (12.5%), and the rest use Imitation with 1 datum (1.56%), addition 1 datum (1.56%), Condensation 1 datum (1.56%) while Taming 2 data (3.12%). The findings highlight that the use of inappropriate strategies can reduce dramatic intensity and disguise important messages, especially in the context of sensitive themes such as sexual violence and psychological trauma. Therefore, this study recommends the application of more appropriate strategies to improve the quality of audiovisual translation, especially in subtitles that relate to the context of bullying.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the translation strategies of idiomatic expressions in the subtitles of the film The Intern using Baker's (1992) theory of idiomatic expression translation strategies, which includes four strategies: using idioms with the same meaning and form, using idioms with the same meaning but different forms, translating through paraphrasing, and translating through omission. The research method used was descriptive qualitative with data sources in the form of English subtitles and their Indonesian translations. From 25 idiom data, three strategies were found to be used: the use of idioms with the same meaning and form (4 data), the use of idioms with the same meaning but different forms (9 data), and translation through paraphrasing (12 data). The omission strategy was not found. The results of the study show that the paraphrasing strategy is the most dominant because it is considered more flexible in adjusting to the target language context. Further research is expected to analyze different objects and consider aspects of procedure and translation quality.
