Abstract

This study aims to determine the process of developing an integrated Al-Qur'an biology learning module on biotechnology material as an alternative teaching material and to determine the feasibility of developing an Al-Qur'an integrated biology learning module on biotechnology material as an alternative teaching material. The learning module development design uses the Borg & Gall model with 7 stages of development. The Al-Qur'an integrated Biology learning module on biotechnology material was assessed by 1 material expert validator, 1 media expert validator, 1 Islamic religious expert validator, 1 teacher and 32 students from Madrasah Aliyah Swasta Al Manar Pulau Raja. The data collection instrument used a questionnaire. Data analysis was descriptive qualitative and quantitative. The results obtained indicate that the development of the Al-Qur'an integrated biotechnology learning module received a good response and received a very satisfactory response by biology teachers with a total percentage of teacher assessments being 97.5% with Very Eligible/Very Valid criteria and from the assessment the total number of students from the large group test was 90.8% with the criteria of Very Eligible/Very Valid and the small group test of 88% with the criteria of Very Eligible/Very Valid. Thus, this module is declared very feasible/very interesting to be used as teaching material in biology learning in class XII IPA Madrasah Aliyah. Thus, it can be concluded that the Al-Qur'an integrated Biology learning module on Biotechnology material which was developed with the Borg & Gall model, is Eligible and Very Interesting to be used as teaching material for students in class XII MA, especially on Biotechnology material.

Abstract

This study focuses on the development of game-based learning instruments using the Baamboozle educational game for teaching digestive system material to eleventh-grade students. The need for this study arose from observations and interviews conducted with biology teachers at Hang Tuah Belawan Private High School, which revealed that the traditional teaching methods currently employed are ineffective in enhancing student interest and comprehension of complex digestive system material. The research methodology used in this study is the Four-D development model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate), which falls under the umbrella of development research or research and development (R&D). Data were collected through interview sheets, expert validation sheets, questionnaires for students and teachers regarding the use of learning instruments, as well as pretest and posttest sheets to evaluate effectiveness. Data analysis was conducted using the Likert scale, and the results were categorized based on the scale's interpretation criteria to conclude the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of the instruments. The findings indicate that the game-based learning instruments developed using Baamboozle games are highly valid, practical, and effective. This study makes a valuable contribution to the advancement of innovative teaching methods that combine educational game technology with complex biological concepts. The implications of this study are significant for future research and practice in educational technology, particularly in terms of enhancing student engagement, promoting the creation of interactive game-based learning content for various subjects, and exploring the long-term effectiveness of game-based learning in science education at the secondary level.

Abstract

The comprehension of concepts is crucial in educational activities and serves as the basis for achieving learning outcomes. However, students often encounter difficulties when it comes to understanding biological concepts, especially those related to the nervous system. This study aims to evaluate the impact of using the Problem-Based Learning model, with the support of the Kahoot application, on students' understanding of concepts related to the nervous system. The research design employed a Quasi Experiment approach, utilizing a Two Group Pretest and Posttest Design. Cluster random sampling was used to select the participants. A 20-question multiple-choice test was employed as the research instrument to measure conceptual understanding. Descriptive analysis techniques, including the calculation of mean, median, mode, and standard deviation, were employed for data analysis. Prior to hypothesis testing, normality and homogeneity tests were conducted to ensure data validity. An independent t-test was utilized for hypothesis testing. The descriptive analysis demonstrated that the average posttest score in the experimental group was 81.09, compared to 54.53 in the control group, indicating higher scores in the experimental group. The results of the t-test (2-tailed) yielded a significant value of 0.000 < 0.05, leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (Ho) and accepting the alternative hypothesis (Ha). This suggests that the Problem-Based Learning model, in conjunction with the Kahoot application, has a positive impact on students' understanding of concepts.

Abstract

Nutrient Agar (NA) is a growth medium for heterotrophic microorganisms made from meat extract, peptone and agar, but commercially it is relatively expensive. As an alternative, researchers innovated using white sweet potatoes (Ipomoea batatas) which are rich in carbohydrates, protein, fat and natural fiber as a growth medium for Escherichia coli bacteria. The aim of this research is to examine the use of white sweet potato flour as a growth medium for Escherichia coli bacteria, and compare it with a medium that is added with meat broth. This research used the experimental research method twice with three repetitions of sweet potato flour, namely 10gr (w/v), 15gr (w/v), 20gr (w/v) and NA control. After conducting research on white sweet potato flour, it was found that the water content test results met the standards of around 8.56–9.66%. The panelists' organoleptic test stated that white sweet potato flour had a smooth texture, yellowish white color, slightly sweet aroma. The solubility test proved that white sweet potato flour does not dissolve in water, and the pH test showed a value of 6.8, the percentage of carbohydrates contained was 74.32%, and protein 1.36%. The results obtained by the number of bacterial colonies with the best treatment without broth were F3 (20 gr white sweet potato flour) 25.5 x 106 CFU and the best treatment with the addition of broth was F2 (sweet potato flour + 15 gr broth) 28.7 x 106 while the NA control showed results of 25.6 x 106 CFU. It can be concluded that white sweet potato flour meets all test standards so that it can be used as an alternative growth medium for bacteria, especially Escherichia coli.

Abstract

This study aims to develop a digital educational Game-based learning medium on the human reproductive system material to enhance students’ Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS). The research method employed the ADDIE development model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. The research subjects were high school students studying the reproductive system. Data were collected through expert validation questionnaires, classroom observations, and tests to measure the improvement of students’ HOTS. The results showed that the developed digital educational Game has a high level of feasibility based on assessments from material and media experts. Its classroom implementation demonstrated improvements in students’ HOTS, particularly in the aspects of analysis, evaluation, and creation. In conclusion, this medium is effective as an innovative and interactive biology learning alternative that stimulates higher-order thinking skills. Abstract

This study aimed to determine the antimicrobial activity of herbal toothpaste formulations containing betel leaf (Piper betle L.) extract against Streptococcus mutans and to evaluate the physical characteristics of the resulting preparations. The research employed a laboratory experimental design with variations in betel leaf extract concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15%, each conducted in four replicates. The analyses included phytochemical screening, antimicrobial activity testing using the disc diffusion method, and evaluation of the toothpaste preparations, including pH measurement, organoleptic assessment, homogeneity testing, foam formation analysis, and viscosity determination. The results of the phytochemical screening indicated that the betel leaf extract positively contained triterpenoids, flavonoids, saponins, phenolic compounds, and alkaloids. The antimicrobial activity test demonstrated that the betel leaf extract produced average inhibition zones of 16.4 mm, 22.7 mm, and 25.6 mm at concentrations of 5%, 10%, and 15%, respectively. The evaluation of the toothpaste formulations showed pH values ranging from 8.04 to 8.42, which fall within the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) range of 4.5–10.5. The preparations exhibited a semi-solid and homogeneous texture, with the highest foam height of 20.6 mm observed at the 15% extract concentration, and viscosity values within the required acceptable range. In conclusion, the herbal toothpaste formulation containing betel leaf extract demonstrated strong antimicrobial activity against Streptococcus mutans and met the required physical parameters for toothpaste preparations. Therefore, it has potential to be developed as an alternative herbal toothpaste based on traditional natural ingredients suitable for oral health applications.

Abstract

Kemampuan berpikir kritis merupakan salah satu kompetensi penting dalam pembelajaran abad ke-21 yang perlu dikembangkan pada peserta didik, khususnya dalam pembelajaran Biologi. Namun, kemampuan berpikir kritis peserta didik pada materi tumbuh kembang makhluk hidup masih belum berkembang secara optimal. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui pengaruh model pembelajaran Reading, Mind Mapping, and Sharing (RMS) terhadap kemampuan berpikir kritis peserta didik pada materi tumbuh kembang makhluk hidup. Penelitian menggunakan metode quasi experiment dengan desain Non-equivalent Control Group Design. Sampel penelitian berjumlah 60 peserta didik kelas XI MIPA SMAS Budi Satrya Medan Tahun Ajaran 2025/2026 yang ditentukan menggunakan teknik total sampling. Instrumen penelitian berupa tes uraian kemampuan berpikir kritis yang telah memenuhi uji validitas dan reliabilitas. Analisis data dilakukan melalui uji normalitas, homogenitas, independent sample t-test, dan effect size. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat pengaruh yang signifikan model pembelajaran RMS terhadap kemampuan berpikir kritis peserta didik dengan nilai signifikansi 0,001 (p < 0,05). Rata-rata nilai posttest kelas eksperimen sebesar 81,73 lebih tinggi dibandingkan kelas kontrol sebesar 70,97. Hasil effect size menunjukkan bahwa model RMS memberikan pengaruh yang kuat terhadap peningkatan kemampuan berpikir kritis peserta didik. Dengan demikian, model pembelajaran RMS layak diterapkan sebagai alternatif pembelajaran Biologi untuk meningkatkan kemampuan berpikir kritis peserta didik.

Abstract

Limbah kulit buah merupakan limbah organik yang berpotensi mencemari lingkungan apabila tidak dikelola dengan baik. Salah satu upaya pemanfaatannya adalah melalui fermentasi menjadi eco enzyme, yaitu produk ramah lingkungan yang berpotensi memiliki aktivitas antibakteri. Penelitian ini bertujuan memanfaatkan limbah kulit buah jeruk, apel, pir, nanas, mangga, serta kombinasinya dan mengevaluasi aktivitas antibakterinya terhadap Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Penelitian dilakukan secara eksperimental dengan memfermentasi masing-masing limbah kulit buah dan campurannya selama 90 hari menggunakan perbandingan kulit buah, molase, dan air sebesar 3:1:10. Karakteristik eco enzyme dianalisis melalui uji organoleptik dan pH, sedangkan aktivitas antibakteri diuji secara in vitro menggunakan metode difusi cakram pada konsentrasi 25%, 50%, 75%, dan 100%. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa eco enzyme memiliki karakteristik warna coklat muda hingga coklat tua, aroma khas asam fermentasi, dan pH bersifat asam. Seluruh perlakuan menunjukkan adanya  aktivitas antibakteri terhadap Pseudomonas aeruginosa dengan variasi zona hambat yang dihasilkan.  Aktivitas tertinggi diperoleh pada sampel Mix Padatan konsentrasi 75% dengan zona hambat sebesar 13,78 mm, diikuti kombinasi kulit jeruk, nanas, dan mangga sebesar 12,53 mm. Sampel tunggal menghasilkan zona hambat berkisar 7,63–8,23 mm, sedangkan kontrol positif menunjukkan zona hambat 10,65 mm. Eco enzyme limbah kulit buah mampu menghambat pertumbuhan Pseudumonas aeruginosa.

Abstract

Pencemaran tanah yang disebabkan oleh pembuangan oli bekas semakin meningkat. Oli bekas dihasilkan dari berbagai macam aktivitas manusia contohnya kegiatan otomotif atau perbengkelan kendaraan bermotor. Agar pemulihan lingkungan yang tercemar oleh limbah oli bekas berjalan dengan efektif maka dilakukan bioremediasi. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk memperoleh danmengetahui informasi konsentrasi berapakah yang paling baik dalam mendegradasi TPH (Total Petroleum Hidrokarbon) dan populasi mikroorganisme dengan menggunakan teknik composting. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian eksperimental dengan menggunakan rancangan kualitatif dan analisis statistic SPSS ANOVA (Analysis of Variance) One Way, untuk melihat pengaruh penambahan variasi komposisi kompos selama proses bioremediasi. Penelitian dilakukan selama 30 hari dengan memvariasikan konsentrasi penambahan kompos, yaitu 0%, 30%, 50%, dan 70% dapat mendegradasi TPH sebesar 9,9%, 1,9%, 0,9%, dan 0,00%. Hasil pengujian suhu dan pH mengalami peningkatanyaitu sebesar 28-330C dan 5-6,5. Hasil pengujian kadar air mengalami penurunan sebesar 18,5%-55,1% selama 30 hari. Biokompos dengan konsentrasi 70% dapat menjadi agen bioremediasi paling baik pada tanah bengkel yang tercemar limbah oli bekas dengan hasil 0,00% yang masih berada di bawah ambang batas kandungan TPH pada sampel sesuai dengan KepMenLH No. 128 Tahun 2008 dengan kadar TPH 1%. Penurunan dan peningkatan hasil pada setiap parameter dimulai dari peningkatan suhu sebesar 28-330C, peningkatan pH sebesar 5-6,5, penurunan kadar air sebesar 18,5%-55,1%, penurunan TPH sebesar 10,17%-0,00%, dan populasi koloni bakteri mengalami fase naik turun sebesar 62 x 105, 251 x 105, 176 x 105 hingga 35 x 105.

Abstract

Limbah rajungan merupakan hasil akhir dari olahan yang berupa cangkang. Limbah dari cangkang rajungan tersebut akan mudah sekali busuk sehingga dapat menimbulkan pencemaran lingkungan. Sclerotium rolfsii adalah salah satu jenis penyakit pada tanaman yang menyebabkan busuk pada batang tanaman. Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui adanya keberadaan bakteri kitinolitik pada limbah cangkang rajungan. Metode penelitian meliputi beberapa tahapan yaitu isolasi bakteri kitinolitik, pemurnian dan identifikasi bakteri kitinolitik, uji aktivitas kitinase bakteri kitinolitik, pewarnaan gram, uji antagonis bakteri kitinolitik terhadap jamur patogen Sclerotium rolfsii, dan uji biokimia. Hasil isolasi diperoleh 6 isolat bakteri kitinolitik dari limbah cangkang rajungan. Lima isolat bakteri kitinolitik mmeiliki kemampuan dalam menghambat jamur patogen Sclerotium rolfsii. Uji antagonis isolat bakteri kitinolitik terhadap jamur patogen Sclerotium rolfsii menunjukkan bahwa KR3 memiliki daya hambat paling tinggi sebesar 10,1 mm dan isolat KR6 memiliki daya hambat paling rendah sebesar 6,3 mm dalam memghambat jamur patogen Sclerotium rolfsii. Isolat KR1 memiliki daya hambat sebesar 8,8 mm, KR2 memiliki daya hambat sebesar 8,5, dan KR4 memiliki daya hambat sebesar 9 mm. Uji biokimia pada uji katalase diperoleh hasil postif, bersifat motil, serta tidak dapat memproduksi jenis gula. Keenam bakteri kitinolitik yang ditemukan merupakan bakteri dari gram positif. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian bahwa isolat bakteri kitinolitik yang diduga genus Bacillus mampu menghambat jamur patogen Sclerotium rolfsii
