Abstract

Siombak Lake is one of the tropical coastal lakes in Indonesia, which is unique and distinctive because it is directly influenced by the tidal dynamics of the Malacca Strait (7 km away) through the Belawan estuary. Therefore, Lake Siombak is brackish in its extensive pool. This lake functions as a water catchment, fishing area, and recreation area. This research aims to determine the fertility level and fisheries potential of Lake Siombak waters. The research was conducted from September 2018 to August 2019, but chlorophyll data was only taken for 4 months, namely November 2018, February, June, and August 2019. Water samples were taken during high tide and low tide conditions. Data taken to determine water fertility includes water brightness, phosphate concentration, and chlorophyll a. The fertility of lake waters is determined using various methods, namely the trophic State Index (TSI) method, Trix method, Trophic State Index Lamp (TSI Lamp), and Tropical Level Index (TLI). The brightness of Lake Siombak's waters ranges from 0.6–1.1 m. Phosphate concentrations ranged from 0.05-14.16 mg/L. The chlorophyll content in Siombak Lake ranges from 0.019 – 0.445 mg/m3. The fertility level of Lake Siombak waters is eutrophic-hypereutrophic with a TSI value of 52.0-71.9; Trix index of 2.8-4.9; TSI lamp is 53.7-68.4; and TLI of 4.76-6.32. Spatially, the most fertile lake location is Station 1 (southern region), and temporally the dry season (February) is more fertile than the rainy season (November). The fisheries potential in Lake Siombak ranges from 320 – 773 kg/ha/month. The potential for fisheries production in Lake Siombak is highest in March.

Abstract

Penentuan status pencemaran DAS Deli menggunakan metode Indeks Pencemaran, National Sanitation Foundation-Water Quality Index (NSF-WQI), Canadian Council of Minister of The Environment (CCME), dan metode Singscore.

Abstract

The Belawan Estuary is a highly important economic and logistics hub in Sumatra, serving as the primary maritime transportation route in western Indonesia. This estuary is also utilized for multiple purposes, including industrial activity, residential areas, and fisheries. These activities inevitably influence water quality, which in turn affects the presence and population dynamics of plankton in the estuary. This study aimed to examine the spatial and temporal distribution of plankton communities in the Belawan Estuary. Observation points were selected from eight locations representing different activities and regions, including areas near the sea, the middle section, and areas close to land. Plankton samples were collected during high and low tides following the tidal cycle (new moon, first quarter, full moon, and last quarter). Principal component analysis was performed to determine the influence of tidal cycles on plankton composition and abundance in the estuary. A total of 64 plankton genera from 16 classes were identified in the estuary. spatially, the highest abundance was recorded in the mouth estuary during low tide. Temporally, the highest plankton abundance across stations was during the first quarter phase at low tide. These findings indicate that tidal cycles significantly influence plankton abundance in the Belawan Estuary. This phenomenon is attributed to the tidal currents that transport nutrients from the lower layers to the surface waters during both high and low tides. Changes in plankton abundance and species composition can serve as indicators of water fertility in this region and reflect the impacts of changes in environmental conditions.

Abstract

Estuaries function as sediment deposition zones that provide essential substrates for mangrove development. Consequently, estuaries and mangroves constitute integral components of coastal ecosystems. The mangrove ecosystem in the Belawan Estuary, North Sumatra Province, is increasingly threatened by rapid urban expansion in Medan City. This study aimed to assess mangrove biodiversity, structural characteristics, and ecological status in the Belawan Estuary. Field surveys were conducted in November 2023 across 28 sampling stations representing seaward, middle, and landward sections of the estuary. Vegetation data were analyzed using density, diversity, evenness, dominance, and Importance Value Index (IVI). A total of 26 mangrove species were recorded, comprising 21 true mangrove species and 5 associated species. The most widely distributed species were Avicennia marina, Avicennia lanata, and Nypa fruticans. Mangrove density ranged from 533 to 2,733 ind ha⁻¹, with an average of 1,420 ind ha⁻¹. Shannon–Wiener diversity values ranged from 0.04 to 1.95, indicating relatively low diversity in several landward stations dominated by N. fruticans. Although the overall condition of mangroves in the Belawan Estuary is classified as good, the ecosystem remains highly vulnerable to land-use conversion under the revised spatial planning framework. Strengthening conservation-oriented spatial policy is therefore essential to ensure long-term ecosystem sustainability.
