Abstract

In the era of globalization, bilingual education (Indonesian-English) which is encouraged in several schools has reduced the intensity of using local languages as mother tongue. This resulted in regional languages being at a critical level. Therefore, this study aims to describe the influence of bilingual education on the development of diction, grammar, and regional language pronunciation of bilingual education students. The method used in this study is a qualitative conversational method. The instruments in this study were researchers assisted by observation sheets. The results of the study state that at the diction level, code mixing occurs in regional languages, Indonesian, and English. At the grammatical level, sentences in Javanese, Indonesian and English are interchanged. On the other hand, at the pronunciation level, students experience problems learning phonemes in regional languages in the form of phoneme substitutions and silences. The factors that cause this to happen are the familiarity between speakers, the high intensity of the use of Indonesian and English, as well as the mastery of regional languages that are still limited.

Abstract

Linguistic landscape becomes a symbol of the presence of language in public spaces, depicting the representation of written language seen in public areas such as roads, tourist attractions, buildings, and food business complexes. The choice of language and function is necessary in response to the linguistic landscape of an area with a strong culinary business reputation for young people. This article aims to explain the choice and function of language as the primary source of reasons for language use in the linguistic landscape of the food business (LL). Data collection techniques used are (1) Observation, (2) in-depth observations, and (3) drawing conclusions against the examination of previous articles published in publications related to investigations in this particular study. Data dominated by bottom-up signage, such as shop names, advertisements, and signs of street food stalls, were collected from signboards in areas where many young people gather to shop, stroll, look, and eat. The results of this study show that bilingual Indonesian-English dominate language contestation in the area. In addition, slang is also found in commercial areas. This research reveals a variety of languages in the culinary business that is dominated by young people. It reports that English is most widely used in signs compared to Indonesian, Javanese, or the mother tongue of the local people. AbstrakLanskap linguistik menjadi simbol kehadiran bahasa di ruang publik yang menggambarkan representasi bahasa tertulis yang terlihat di area umum, seperti jalan, tempat wisata, bangunan, dan kompleks bisnis makanan. Pilihan dan fungsi bahasa diperlukan sebagai tanggapan terhadap lanskap linguistik suatu daerah dengan reputasi bisnis kuliner yang kuat. Artikel ini bertujuan menjelaskan pilihan dan fungsi bahasa sebagai sumber utama penggunaan bahasa dalam lanskap linguistik bisnis makanan (LL). Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan ialah (1) observasi, (2) pengamatan mendalam, dan (3) penarikan kesimpulan terhadap pemeriksaan artikel sebelumnya yang diterbitkan dalam publikasi yang berkaitan dengan investigasi dalam studi khusus ini. Data yang didominasi oleh papan nama bottom-up, seperti nama toko, iklan, dan tanda warung makan jalanan, dikumpulkan dari papan nama di daerah-daerah tempat banyak anak muda berkumpul untuk berbelanja, berjalan-jalan, melihat-lihat, dan makan. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa bilingual bahasa Indonesia-Inggris mendominasi kontestasi bahasa di daerah tersebut. Selain itu, bahasa gaul juga ditemukan di area komersial. Penelitian ini mengungkapkan ragam bahasa dalam bisnis kuliner yang didominasi oleh anak muda. Bahasa Inggris paling banyak digunakan dibandingkan dengan bahasa Indonesia, Jawa, atau bahasa ibu masyarakat setempat.

Abstract

This research explores how the variation in language, including practices like code-switching and shifts in dialect, influences the formation of social identities within academic communities characterized by multilingualism. The study focuses on a student from Papua at Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana (UKSW), where language plays a critical role in expressing cultural connections, managing interpersonal dynamics, and navigating power structures. By conducting a qualitative research through interviews and participant observation, the study investigates how the student utilizes his diverse linguistic skills to negotiate his identities and either connect with or distance himself from different social groups. The findings highlight the dual role of language in both including and excluding individuals, which mirrors broader sociocultural power structures. Specifically, the Papuan student employs language strategically to assert his regional identity while also adapting to national and global standards. This research advances our understanding of language variation as a significant sociolinguistic phenomenon and underscores its intricate relationship with identity construction in academic environments. The results offer valuable insights for both the field of sociolinguistics and for understanding how marginalized linguistic communities navigate the challenges of social and academic integration.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the use of Javanese language in the domain of children’s social groups in the Mataraman Area of the Blitar border. Qualitative method is utilized in this study to provide a comprehensive conception of the linguistic phenomenon accurately without any treatment given to the subject matter. As a sociolinguistic study, it aims to observe the language attitude observed in the domain of children’s social groups in the border areas. In an effort to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic, the data was collected by a field team consisting of local residents to expedite the process while still adhering to the established health protocols. It is expected that this study can facilitate policy makers in fostering and maintaining Javanese language as the mother tongue of communities located in cultural border areas. Additionally, the current study can also be utilized as input for preserving and protecting Javanese language as children’s mother tongue as the next generation of native speakers of a certain community in an effort to maintain the identity of their local culture. The results show that there is indeed a shift in language use, i.e., the use of mixed languages—a combination of Javanese Ngoko and Indonesian or a unique mix of Javanese Ngoko, Indonesian, and Malay—as observed in a conversation among siblings when they played together. There are also three major factors that are seen to influence this shift, i.e., parental, technological, and social environmental factors, where these three contribute to children’s interactions.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the prominence of Japanese language usage in public areas of Mojokerto, East Java. This linguistic phenomenon pertains to sociolinguistic settings, rendering it a compelling subject for study. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method to elucidate social phenomena inside the Mojokerto community. Data were collected via observations in Ngoro, Mojosari, and Magersari sub-districts, concentrating on linguistic utilization in education, commerce, and industry. The research was conducted from June 2023 to March 2024 through photographic documentation and interviews with five participants. Two individuals from the trade sector, one from the education sector, and two from the industry sector were present. The collected data consisted of 31 instances of Japanese usage in public settings in Mojokerto, exhibiting diverse patterns. The acquired data is corroborated by interview results indicating that Japanese is extensively utilized in public settings in Mojokerto. The findings of this study indicate that the utilization of Japanese in Mojokerto is grassroots, as there is no governmental involvement.

Abstract

This research investigates translanguaging dynamics in the context of podcasts, focusing on the alternation between English and Indonesian languages. The study aims to uncover patterns, functions, and implications of language alternation in this digital communication medium. Employing a qualitative approach, podcast episodes are transcribed, translated, and analyzed to identify instances of translanguaging. The findings provide insights into the complex interplay of linguistic elements in podcast discourse and contribute to the understanding of sociolinguistic practices in the digital age.

Abstract

The ‘Pamitran’ MSME Bazaar held in Ngenep Village, Karangploso District, Malang Regency, is a strategic initiative for local economic empowerment and MSME development in the village. Through collaboration between various parties—lecturers, students, PKK groups, village officials, professionals, and MSME actors—this activity has successfully created an effective marketing platform for local products. The bazaar activities were not limited to buying and selling transactions but also included various educational and recreational activities, such as French language training for children, coloring competitions, community exercises, dance and music performances, and health services involving the Indonesian Red Cross and doctors. The results of the activity showed that over 85% of SME products were sold, while visitors were also actively engaged in educational and recreational activities. The bazaar successfully raised public awareness about the importance of supporting local products, introduced village-specific products, and strengthened social networks among SME operators and the community. Through the synergy between various elements, this activity demonstrated that cross-sectoral collaboration can be a key factor in the sustainable development of village economies.

Abstract

Cross-cultural communication among international students presents specific strategies and challenges, particularly within the educational domain. The success of communication largely depends on the ability of international students to adapt and develop effective coping mechanisms in the host country. This study aims to investigate the strategies and coping mechanisms employed by international students during their learning experiences in Indonesia. A descriptive qualitative method was applied, involving two international student participants. The findings reveal several challenges in cross-cultural communication, mainly cultural differences that influence both verbal and non-verbal interactions. Data analysis was conducted through triangulation by comparing participants’ experiences with previous studies and relevant theories. This research provides an in-depth analysis of the challenges and coping strategies of international students, highlighting aspects that have not been extensively discussed in previous studies. The results are expected to serve as a valuable reference for future international students in navigating cross-cultural differences within Indonesian educational contexts.

Abstract

Vocabulary of River Eco-Lexicon in Banjarese LanguageABSTRAKMasyarakat Banjar hidup sejak dahulu di sekitaran sungai. Hampir seluruh kegiatan masyarakat Banjar yang dilakukan di sungai tentu membentuk orientasi dan kebudayaan masyarakat maritim. Kebudayaan akan memengaruhi bahasa masyarakat tersebut. Dengan kajian ekolinguistik, bisa ditemukan bahwa erat kaitan antara bahasa dan lingkungan tempat tinggal manusia. Bahasa merupakan salah satu identitas masyarakat yang mencerminkan kebudayaan masyarakat itu sendiri. Namun, seiring berjalannya zaman, arus globalisasi sedikit demi sedikit mulai menggeser orientasi masyarakat sungai. Ini akan berdampak pada krisis jati diri dan berdampak pada pemertahanan bahasa daerah. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Data penelitian yang berupa leksikon kesungaian didadapatkan melalui penelitian lapangan dan kajian pustaka. Ditemukan hasil bahwa masyarakat usia 40-60 tahun, mengetahui lebih banyak leksikon kesungaian dibandingkan dengan masyarakat usia 20-40 tahun. Hal ini membuktikan bahwa leksikon kesungaian pada masyarakat Banjar mulai mengalami penurunan daya tahan.Kata kunci: Ekoleksikon, Identitas Maritim, Masyarakat Banjar, Sungai.ABSTRACTThe Banjar people have lived around the river for a long time. Almost all the activities of the Banjar people which are carried out on the river certainly shape the orientation and culture of the maritime community. Culture will influence the language of the community. With ecolinguistic studies, it can be found that there is a close relationship between language and the environment in which humans live. Language is one of society's identities that reflects society's culture. However, as time goes by, the flow of globalization gradually begins to shift the orientation of the river community. This will have an impact on the crisis of identity and impact on the maintenance of local languages. This study used descriptive qualitative method. Research data in the form of a river lexicon were obtained through field research and literature review. The results found that people aged 40-60 years, know more river lexicon than people aged 20-40 years. This proves that the lexicon of rivers in the Banjar community begins to experience a decrease in resistance.Keyword: Eco-Lexicon, Maritime Identity, Banjar Society, River

Abstract

Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk konflik batin yang terjadi pada tokoh Abdel dalam film Athena karya Romain Gavras. Teori yang digunakan pada penelitian ini adalah teori konflik Tipe Satu Kurt Lewin. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Objek penelitian ini adalah konflik batin yang terjadi pada tokoh Abdel dengan menggunakan sumber data film Athena. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan menggunakan teknik pustaka atau dokumen, yaitu dengan mengkaji berbagai sumber pustaka seperti gambar, teks atau karya monumental seseorang. Data yang didapatkan kemudian dianalisis menurut Miles and Huberman dengan urutan proses yang terdiri dari reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Pada penelitian ini ditemukan enam konflik batin yang dialami tokoh Abdel, sesuai teori konflik Kurt Lewin, yaitu konflik mendekat-mendekat (approach-approach conflict), konflik menjauh-menjauh (avoidance-avoidance conflict) dan konflik mendekat-menjauh (approach-avoidance conflict). Sehingga dapat disimpulkan bahwa konflik batin yang dialami tokoh Abdel mencakup keseluruhan konflik batin Tipe Satu, karena dia dihadapkan oleh dua sisi yang sangat diinginkannya ataupun sangat tidak diinginkannya dalam waktu yang bersamaan.
