Abstract

Abstract

Muhammadiyah, as a modernist Islamic organization in Indonesia, has significantly contributed to transforming Javanese society since its founding in 1912 by KH Ahmad Dahlan. This article explores how Muhammadiyah addresses the complexities of local cultural dynamics through cultural adaptation and a progressive approach. Grounded in pure Islamic values, Muhammadiyah leverages positive cultural aspects, such as communal cooperation (gotong-royong), to strengthen its mission. Its strategies include modern education, religious practice reforms, and inclusivity principles, creating harmony between Javanese traditions and Islamic teachings. This study employs a descriptive-qualitative analysis with a historical approach to investigate Muhammadiyah's contributions in education, health, economic empowerment, and women's roles through Aisyiyah. The findings reveal that Muhammadiyah not only succeeded in purifying Islamic teachings but also built a more progressive, tolerant, and inclusive society. By emphasizing contextualization, Muhammadiyah created a relevant and adaptive model of Islamic propagation, establishing itself as a symbol of progressive Islam responsive to socio-cultural changes in Java

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the thought of KH Ahmad Dahlan in shaping the Islamic reform movement through Muhammadiyah, focusing on the concepts of tajdid, Al-Ma’un theology, and their relevance to the development of Progressive Islam. The research employed a qualitative approach using a library research method based on primary and secondary sources related to KH Ahmad Dahlan’s thought, the history of Muhammadiyah, and scholarly studies on Islamic reform in Indonesia. Data were analyzed through content analysis and a historical-interpretative approach to examine the relationship between religious ideas, social transformation, and the institutionalization of Islamic movements. The findings reveal that Ahmad Dahlan’s concept of tajdid was not limited to the purification of Islamic beliefs and practices but was also directed toward social transformation through education, healthcare services, philanthropy, and community empowerment. Al-Ma’un theology served as the primary foundation linking individual piety with social responsibility, which was subsequently manifested through Muhammadiyah’s various charitable and social institutions. The study concludes that KH Ahmad Dahlan’s thought represents a model of transformative Islam that integrates spirituality, rationality, and social concern. This model remains highly relevant in addressing contemporary challenges, including educational development, social inequality, digital transformation, and the strengthening of religious moderation.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to reconstruct KH Ahmad Dahlan’s integrative tajdid model as the foundation of the Muhammadiyah reform movement and Islamic social transformation in Indonesia. Previous studies have generally examined Ahmad Dahlan’s thought from partial perspectives, such as education, da‘wah, philanthropy, or Islamic reform, without providing a comprehensive understanding of the interconnected dimensions of his reformist ideas. This research employed a qualitative approach using a library research method. Data were collected from relevant primary and secondary sources and analyzed through content analysis involving data reduction, categorization, interpretation, and conceptual synthesis. The findings reveal that KH Ahmad Dahlan developed an integrative tajdid model consisting of five major pillars: purification of faith (aqidah), educational reform, Al-Ma’un social theology, women’s empowerment, and cultural da‘wah. These dimensions are interconnected and constitute the foundation of Muhammadiyah as a progressive Islamic movement capable of integrating Islamic values with social transformation. The study demonstrates that tajdid in Ahmad Dahlan’s perspective extends beyond the purification of Islamic teachings and encompasses the development of educational institutions, social services, community empowerment, and religious moderation. This integrative tajdid model remains highly relevant in addressing contemporary challenges shaped by globalization, digital transformation, and increasingly complex social changes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the concept of pesantren education from ethical, legal, and psychological perspectives by placing the thinking of KH. Hasyim Asy'ari is the main basis of the analysis. This research uses a qualitative approach based on literature studies with hermeneutic-critical analysis. The results of the study show that in the thinking of KH. Hasyim Asy'ari, pesantren education is built on the integration of adab, fiqh, and kiai-santri relations as the foundation for the formation of student character. This study found that adab is placed as the main requirement in the process of seeking knowledge, so that students are required to prioritize respect for teachers, sincerity, discipline, and self-control before achieving intellectual competence. In the normative dimension, fiqh is not only understood as a formal rule of worship, but also as an instrument for fostering social behavior and ethics in the daily life of students. Meanwhile, the kiai-santri relationship functions as an affective pedagogical model that emphasizes example, emotional closeness, and habituation of values through direct interaction in pesantren life. These findings show that pesantren education from the perspective of KH. Hasyim Asy'ari is oriented towards the integration of intellectual, spiritual, and moral development. This article emphasizes that this paradigm has high relevance in responding to the crisis of dehumanization of modern education. The novelty of this research lies in the effort of an integrative conceptual reconstruction, which synthesizes the dimensions of ethics, law, and psychology in one coherent epistemic framework, different from previous studies that tended to be partial, both sociological, historical, and pedagogical. These findings show that the paradigm is relevant in responding to the crisis of dehumanization of modern education as well as contributing to the development of a more integrative epistemology of Islamic education.

Abstract

The Compilation of Islamic Law (Kompilasi Hukum Islam/KHI) is one of the most significant instruments in the development of Islamic law in Indonesia, particularly in the areas of marriage, inheritance, and waqf. Although it has served as the primary legal guideline for Religious Courts since its promulgation through Presidential Instruction No. 1 of 1991, the KHI continues to generate debates regarding its formal legitimacy, substantive provisions, and relevance to contemporary social developments. This study aims to critically examine the strengths, weaknesses, and reform directions of the KHI within the framework of Indonesia’s national legal system. The research employs a library research method with a descriptive-analytical approach. Data sources consist of primary legal materials, including the KHI and related regulations, as well as secondary materials such as books, journal articles, and previous scholarly studies. Data were analyzed through a normative assessment of the KHI’s legal position, functions, implementation, and challenges in Islamic family law practice. The findings indicate that the principal strength of the KHI lies in its ability to promote legal uniformity, simplify diverse fiqh opinions into operational legal provisions, and strengthen legal certainty within Religious Courts. However, the KHI also faces formal and substantive limitations, including its relatively weak legal status and its insufficient responsiveness to issues of gender justice, child protection, legal pluralism, and contemporary family dynamics. Therefore, KHI reform should be conducted through a participatory and maqāṣid al-syarī‘ah-based approach that emphasizes substantive justice and social responsiveness

Abstract

Islamic boarding schools are Islamic educational institutions in the form of dormitories where students' activities are carried out under the guidance and supervision of mentors who are supposed to play an important role in instilling religious values so that students can comply with the legal norms that apply to them. However, behind the image of Islamic boarding schools as places of spiritual development, reports of sexual violence have raised public concern because they are committed by people who have the authority to educate and protect students. This occurs because the perpetrators wield power, making it easy for them to intimidate their victims. Sexual violence in religious educational environments is often hidden and goes unreported because it is committed by people with strong power structures. This issue is important and very complex because it can lead to violations of Islamic legal norms. Using a qualitative approach, this study analyzes the experiences of victims and the response of institutions to violations that have occurred. The results of the study show that unchecked power can create an environment that encourages sexual violence. This is evidenced by the fact that the perpetrators were immoral teachers and dormitory supervisors who held positions of power at the Islamic boarding school, making it impossible for the victims to avoid or even reject them. This study is expected to provide insights into the need for policy reform and increased awareness to protect victims, as well as the enforcement of existing legal norms

Abstract

The emergence of Muhammadiyah represents a pivotal milestone in the history of Islamic reform in Indonesia, closely linked to the pioneering thought of KH Ahmad Dahlan. Nevertheless, previous studies have predominantly focused on Muhammadiyah as an organization or Ahmad Dahlan as its founder, leaving limited attention to the reconstruction of his ideas as the conceptual foundation of the Muhammadiyah reform movement. This study aims to analyze the pioneering thought of KH Ahmad Dahlan in shaping the Muhammadiyah reform movement and to explain how his ideas were institutionalized into a sustainable socio-religious movement. The research employs a qualitative conceptual approach based on an extensive literature review of reputable journal articles, academic books, and relevant documents. Data were analyzed using qualitative content analysis supported by the perspectives of Islamic Modernism, Social Movement Theory, and Institutional Theory. The findings reveal that Ahmad Dahlan's reform paradigm consists of five interconnected dimensions: purification of Islamic creed, revitalization of ijtihad, integration of Islamic and modern education, Al-Ma'un-based social theology, and organizational modernization. These dimensions enabled Muhammadiyah to institutionalize Islamic values through education, healthcare, philanthropy, and community empowerment, ensuring its sustainability as a reform movement. This study contributes to the literature by providing a conceptual reconstruction of the relationship between Islamic reformist thought, institutional development, and the sustainability of Muhammadiyah. The findings also offer practical insights for strengthening moderate Islamic movements and promoting adaptive Islamic education in addressing contemporary social and technological challenges.
